@uptongrey1 I think the Conservatives biggest mistake of recent times was not going for Heseltine when Thatcher stood down. You can never predict how an MP's time as PM might go, but I'm sure Michael Heseltine would have been more effective than John Major.

Heseltine was a more decent person than say, Thatcher, but he still represents this bullingdon attitude to social policies. This hatred of the Tories, matched with Blair's charisma and political skill, made it impossible for Labour to lose in '97.

No, I'm not denying what you said. Of course, new labour was full of lies and broken promises. But they hardly 'brought the country to it's knees'. I was appauled by the Iraq War (Tories cannot claim the moral high ground for that), but unlike most I forgive Blair for that. His achievements are great ones. It was also fun to see Cameron getting beaten at PMQs.

Famous last words by Heseltine insisting that the conservatives would win the next election.. sadly he got that horribly wrong. But I guess the fact that they recovered from an opinion poll slump in 1992 to win the election and the fact that the exit polls before that election predicting a labour victory were wrong, I suppose that's what gave him reason to say such.

Nonetheless he never saw 13 horrible years of labour coming at that point, judging by Prezza's words he certainly did mind.
