"Yellow submarine" was the slang term for amphetamine (speed) pills the Beatles were given when they performing for 8 hours a night in the clubs in Hamburg in the early 60's. They were yellow and shaped a bit like a submarine. But the song itself was not about speed, Paul just like the term as a title.
They were quieter because of the experience. Knowing they were the best no matter what they did must have been a full plate for their self-esteem. You can see it from the drugs side too but, primordially, their confidence was bigger and they didn't need to be as they were in the beginning.
P.S.: Besides John, they all had the Sgt. Pepper's hairs already. :-)
Super interview this is the first time i have seen these parts... the parts missing here when a reporter asked do any of you record on your own? That clip is in colour. I recall George also talks about the genuine fans and hangers on.
Thanks for this vid, it's great. Wow, can you imagine that one year after this press conference the Beatles would have recorded Strawberry Fields Forever, Penny Lane made the promo films for them, changed their look completely, performed All You Need Is Love across the world live via satellite, recorded and released Sgt. Pepper's, and busted psychedelia wide open.
Thank you for posting these interviews. You can tell they are getting tired of all these silly questions by this point. It sounds like the interviewer at 3:00 asks if they bring their bibles with them on tour. What kind of question is that?
At 2:01 Paul makes up a children's book title on the spot: Sparky. "Sparky?" ask John with a grin. The Beatles had more charm and timing than all of today's rock groups combined. Thanks, walawala1873... you're first among thousands of Beatles video sources.
