As much as I love W Earl Brown, I will never be able to look at him without thinking, "franks and beans!!!" from There's Something About Mary. Every time I see him that's the first thing I think.
@thehiphopdepot, Yeah,. but this fight scene from "Deadwood" was very realistic, whereas the fight scene from "They Live", while quite entertaining, was meant to be comedic, therefore not so realistic. It's like comparing apples and bowling balls.
@thehiphopdepot people don't get their eyes pulled out today, but its realistic in the fact that they both aren't going all out after 2 minutes of straight fighting as you see in modern day movies.

I always wondered why I never got into Deadwood..... oh yeah, it wasn't The Sopranos. If I wanted to see a bunch of over weight country hics hug, wrestle and Mike Tyson kiss each other.... I'd watch Deadwood.
@amerikano Oh I see...you'd rather watch a bunch of overweight Guidos shoot each other with their little guns/penises. Sopranos is like The Andy Griffith Show compared to Deadwood.
The single most horrific thing I've ever seen on a TV show. Its so unexpected too, the fight is violent and brutal, but as a lot of film/TV fights are, and looks like its going to end and out of nowhere comes THAT. Jesus
@oki9Sedo what about the young girl who gets whacked round the head, thats really horrific, her eyes glaze over and it gives me shivers thinkin bout it,ya know the young lass whos thiefing and gets caught.
@AnnabellsSmiles YES,of course its real life, thats what the easter bunny told me anyways, your silly if ya think its fiction, anyway,im off to the pub with santa claus, bye bye =]

If you continue to watch the series you'll come to find the captain actually held back as he promised to make the fight last long... but either way i voted for dan from the beginning...
@Hallowedpointdtp man i was thinking about that as i watched this and it didnt seem like he held back to me that was some bullshit man old dan fucked him because he didnt freak out when he was down like the capt did he kept his head and pulled his leg out from under him dan would fucked that guy up with his eyeball hangin out
@Hallowedpointdtp To be fair, we dont know for sure if he actually held back, or if that is what Hearst says to talkdown the significance of the captain's death.
Now this by far is the grossest scene on series Deadwood. Ah when that eyeball popped out. I about lost all the cookies right then and there. LOL
Earl Brown is the friendliest man you could meet. He is just a great big huggy bear and just a wonderful man, actor, and singer. I love the song he wrote and sang with Sacred Cowboys. It is just great.
I thought and hoped for season 4. There was to be more I thought. And HBO hasn't had as great of a hit as this one. Next would be Sopranos for me.
Never underestimate an older gentlemen, or in Captain's case, older bastard, he had the fight won, but Hearst's greed was his down fall. Daily survival was everything back then and Dan Dority is the f'n man!
I remember the first time I saw this, when it looks like Dan is done for, I was shouting "Oh fuck! No! Dan!" at the screen. Then when he tore his eye out I actually screamed. I think some neighbors might have been woken up that night. Amazingly taut scene.
I love the subtle rock back & nod Al gives when Dan looks at him. It reminds me of the old gladiator movies where they looked up for the thumbs up or thumbs down before killing the loser or letting them live. Great symbolism.
Just saw this scene today, I was sitting on the top of my chair holding my breath.....this was fucking tense ! I actually yelled at some point "fucking kill him Dan !" Needles to say: Best fighting scene ever !
@limboslam - yeap, that's W. Earl Brown who also played Warren in There's Something About Mary. Hard to believe Dority and Warren are the same people.
@GlennShook the two guys on the balconies are rivals and the guys fighting are their respective henchmen. al swearengen's guy, dan, won the fight. great series - the profane mixed with the sublime.
the gladiator fight with titus on rome and that beating chris gave that child molester on the wire, were both bad ass. however, this scene right here with dan and the captain is just epic.

a typical "clean" fight in ye olde west:
step 1) have a dude bite your cheek

step 3) let your head get smashed on a pile of rocks repeatedly
step 4) tear the guy's eye out then bludgeon him to death with a vintage 2x4 :)
