In 1957 those Americans who defied the US State Department's ban on travel to China had their passports taken away, mail opened, were watched by the FBI & CIA, etc. Today you can go to China, even go to school or work there, with no difficulty. Try studying history. Knowledge of the past can help one understand the present.
If the economy continues moving at the same rate,China should overtake Japan as second in 2012 and should replace the U.S.A as the world's largest economy & superpower on earth in 2030,meaning that the U.S.A will have been the world's superpower for[90years].Great Britain was the world's biggest economy & superpower, they replaced China from Mar1736 till Nov1940 [204years]. China & India was the world's richest nation & superpower from 2500BC till March1736 ,they may come back again.
I have never seen this vedio before. While we often heard from old people that 50's in china was very good, people were full of passion to build our country.however, things changed since 1958.
Amazing video. For a Cold War American video it actually presents Communism in a positive light. It makes it evident that a Communist leadership helped China out of the dark ages and into the future.
The free Education that was available in Communist China was free till 1979 when the US establish full diplomatic relations and started to heavily invested in that country up to the present
The scenes were filmed in 1957 as a series of silent news reports; and shown throughout the USA & Canada as a film-lecture. The sound track-narration was added in the 1960s when it was televised as part of the Walter Reade/Sterling SPECIAL OF THE WEEK series.

Robert Cohen did a great professional work on China in 1950s. Nowadays journalists are more profit-driven and less professional.

if you look at 28:35 you can see the pre-59 flag of the GDR (which was the same as the one of West Germany at this time)

Hearing these old terms is pretty interesting: Peking, Formosa. Really shows the changes in our view of this country.
