  • I've always been for organ donation. I never understood why someone wouldn't. Although you bring up a good point about "sacred" concept of the body. It made me think of the Egyptians who spent a lot of time preserving the organs for the afterlife. Still when I think of things in these terms. I believe the two are separate and your body could be much more useful, say helping save someones life rather than feeding the next tree. That one human could create a lot more compost from eating.

  • Why the fucking hell would anyone want to give away organs, are you fucking mad, you know how much that shit costs on the black market, and you fucking get nothing, oh but the asshole surgeon will get another 300k this year putting your organs into someone else while your family gets fucking "thank you" cards.

  • @AdamGLewis That's what my dad told me when I got my license & the only reason I'm not a donor...I don't expect to ever get in a car accident anyway (though of course no one does expect that).

  • It seems crazy that people wouldn't give their organs - for me it's a must. I signed up for organ donation a while ago. Yeah it's part of me but once I'm gone I have no use for them any more so why not give somebody else a choice. Personally, and this will be a bold statement, I would make organ donation the automatic stance with a sign out option, not the way round it is now. At least a little bit of me might make somebody's day a little brighter once I'm gone. :)

  • @SDWLLB Personally if you ever did somehow manage to make organ donation mandatory for anything I will personally hunt you down and kill you, you communist piece of shit.

  • @DeadEndScreamer Ok, bit of an over-reaction on your part there. I merely expressed my belief and even stated that there'd be the ability to opt out.

Also I'm not communist either - in UK political terms I'm actually classed as conservative, in US terms I'm thought of as democrat and I'm looking at pragmatically saving lives here. So you're entitled to your opinions but no need to be hostile.

And in the event I do make it mandatory with opt out, I say to you bring it - I don't fear death.

  • @DeadEndScreamer Also, ironically if you did somehow track me down, kill me etc I'm an organ donor, so my organs would also in fact be donated so all I have remaining to say is LOL!

  • Why do so many people think if the hospiltal know's you are an organ donor they will leave you to die , apart from the fact iits not true the hospital wouldent even know if your a donor or not and if you and even if you are a donor you family can over rride it

  • @directorkang , Well, according to your philosophy I should be Dead(I'm 53 an I just had a Liver Transplant, cancer of the Liver) and I did not fail to live my Life, cancer can really have a huge impact on one's life, think about it ! PS. Getting cancer was Not my Fault, it may have came from pollution,or bad Genes, I have no Idea where it came from, I'm only alive today because of my Transplant,so Grow-Up and smell the coffee,it may happen to you one day, and you will think back to your own words

  • first of all, I want you to look up "laura flores" and "anahi" you look like a combination of both. =]

  • Lastly I think that overpopulation is the cause for many current problems in the world today and it’s getting worse by the minute and medicine is the main reason for that. If there would be a harmonious balance between humans and other living organisms like in the past then people would lead better lives.

  • Secondly many of the survivors from organ transplantation will most likely hold God reasonable for their survival hence sustaining and possibly promoting theism. Why wouldn’t I want to promote theism? I think it holds the society back from intellectual advancements which could contribute greatly towards our wellbeing.

  • As I’m an agnostic atheist I really wouldn’t mind if somebody took any of my organs without my permission after my death, however if I had to make a decision while I’m still alive then I wouldn’t give my consent. Why? Well there are many people who might need an organ and by me agreeing to give an organ to somebody that somebody will fell worthier to live than other people hence worsening the psychological inequality in the society.

  • no one is getting any part of me ever

  • I would give you any of my organs :)

  • I will give you my kidney, my heart, and my liver.

  • you know ironically I was looking through my mail and i got a letter telling me to renew my drivers license and the option was on there to become an organ donor. im considering it... for whatever reason my little brain is rationalizing. although a humorously all i can think about is the movie Repo: the genetic opera

  • My biology teacher once told me that in some cases, if your in a life or death situation in a hospital and they see your a donor, they'll ...hhmmmm how can I say it, take their time attending you and turn a blind eye for an extra minute or two...May not be true in ALL cases, makes one think

  • People might be uncomfortable about making a statement that upon their death, a hospital would receive their organs, out of fear that a surgeon might know about it during a surgery :P

  • I don't donate blood because I get dizzy, dry heaves etc. when my blood is being drawn. Not a fear of needles, just some weird physical reaction that happens with about 5% of the populace.

If someone needed it immediately, I would put aside my physical responses and willingly give my blood to the individual.

As far as donating organs, I could care less after I die, as long as I'm not dieing just so my organs can be harvested. That would be disgusting.

  • Allow people to sell their organs-Libertarian position we own our bodies

  • I'm not an organ donor, but that doesn't mean they won't harvest my organs to the highest bidder when you kill me.

There are studies showing the receiver having a change in characteristics that mimic the donors. The same thing has occurred with giving, or receiving blood from a person.

  • I want to donate my genes to you Kimberly! (Yeah, I know a total rip-off of a previous post).

  • I donate blood on a regular bases. I wouldn't mind donating my organs. The only problem with it for me is that the organs usually go to the people with the most money. If you don't believe me call a hospital/doctor office and ask if they would transplant organs if the patients has no money/insurance. There is usually a fee to be placed on a list at a hospital not for the national list.

  • I want the paramedics saving my life, not looking for parts.

  • I will gladly donate some of my DNA to you, Kim.

    Teehee.

  • I don't play the organ. Can I just donate a cheap electric piano ??

  • OH WHAT THE HELL, is there some kind of philosophically vacant discussion going on about "self interest?" Of course there's no true altruism, if you'd implicate feel-good neurotransmitters in actions, everything has a cause. Don't be tedious. Also rem, you're defending your insult with a moot point. Have some personal responsibility.

  • @existentialistcat

Have can you have personal responsibility when it cannot possibly exist in a physical world?

  • did somebody ok the donation of their face to that lady?...i would never do that. as i handsome guy, i wouldn't want any dude to use my georgeous mug to get action with chicks after i am dead...

  • i can understand that guy's point of view but idk i think it would be worth it to save many people's lives

  • Here's a (morbid?) thought as modern science advances... suppose the technology advances to the point of some variation of brain transplant. Would the being of oneself live on more-so than say that of the lung? What about if one was decapitated and the technology was there to perform this miracle... LOL

  • Donating an organ, blood or even a dollar to someone in need, is an individual's choice. Everyone has their reasons for doing or not doing something. I may want to take a left as I walk down the street or I may decide to go right.I had 2 uncles back out of giving their sister(My mother) a kidney for various reasons. She never wanted me to give it to her, but I knew that they'd back out and I'd be the one. Everyone said what an amazing thing I was doing it was simple to me. Give & she lives!

  • 3:25 lol

  • My Sister nearly died in 1997 of kidney failure after giving birth. The Wee Boy Jason Alan didn't survive. I gave her my left kidney 3 March 2000. 8 March 2007 she gave birth to the most beautiful little girl you ever saw. She's called Sara. She even looks like me. I've survived 8 years on one kidney. I can still do everything I could before. You only need one people. The gift of life is the best gift to give. I hope this inspires anyone thinking of being a donor to do it. LOL

  • "My Sister nearly died in 1997 of kidney failure after giving birth. The Wee Boy Jason Alan didn't survive. I gave her my left kidney 3 March 2000. 8 March 2007 she gave birth to the most beautiful little girl you ever saw. She's called Sara. She even looks like me."

    Inbreeding is bad, mmmkay?

  • This guy's a loser, I blocked him but he keeps coming back. He just wants attention.

  • "This guy's a loser"

Surely you can come up with a better insult than that? Come on... don't hold back, I can take it!

    "He just wants attention."

Nonsense. I don't need attention at all.

  • "Just cause you havenae the balls to risk your life for another"

He acted out of self-interest... what he did was selfish and cowardly.

  • "How the fuck is it self interest to save someones life?"

Everything we do, we do for ourselves.

"How is it cowardly to risk your life for another."

    1. Kidney donation is a safe procedure.

    2. He was afraid of losing her. He acted out of fear and self-interest.

  • Sorry abt the rant. Its just that the roads are tax-supported public property & I dont get the philosophy that degenerating this into a national entertainment medium, when nearly 20,000 violent dismembering incidents put Americans in the ground every year. I know this is a mechanical system & such carnage is preposterously useless. What kind of people supplicates themselves to this. Why?

  • Organ donor status flagged on a driver's license. Perfect. Maybe its just a deep sense of disgust at the juxtaposition that would make one decline. I always was a donor. then I really donated. F THAT. If I get shitted on again by americanism they can just shoot me cuz its too hard to climb back up to YOU PEOPLE's lofty stinkin level.

  • We are not our bodies. Our bodies are only 1% of who we actually are. Keep em coming.

  • I've had two kidney transplants. I'm very pleased to still be here.

  • hey... you know what, you're too polite. But you know what, you perfectly make up for that with grace. Invasive argumentation doesn't seem to be your way, you're always trying to be objective, trying not to cause too much controversy. But... erm... controversy FUCKING ROCKS!! It gets things moving. Get some heated emotion into the debate! Well, at least don't always steer around it so carefully. Your stupid country needs it. Without it, nothing ever happens.

  • Here's my reason! If we DO donate organs, the demand for development of synthetic organs will always be lower because of organ's donations.

The 2 big problems of using human organs are: compatibility issues and traffic of stolen organs.

If we help scientist to work harder and better funded in the development of the "industry made" organs, one day we could generate every part of a body.

And also have a "stock" without having any of the 2 problems mentioned before.

    Nice video! :-)

  • well, the obvious joke here is: I have an organ I would willingly donate to you! The only question is - where do you want it?!

I definately support organ-donation in this instance.

  • omg i gave up all my organs

  • Myths aren't REALITY. You won't be left to die, doctors want you to survive.

What confused comments! What they do in China is a travesty. For your squeamishness, flip attitude, lots of people - like you & your family members - should not receive organs that can offer them LIFE? Recipients are DYING, will die if there are no organ donors. When you're hooked up to a respirator and your brain is Kaput - Why not help them??

  • The only reason I wouldn't become an organ donor in the U.S. is because I don't trust our medical system. Medicine is becoming more and more a business, same as many other industries, and more and more doctors and hospitals are conveniently "delaying diagnosing" certain patients if they think it is better financially for them to let you die so they can donate some of your organs to someone else.

I know, that's pretty loaded of a comment, so let me know if you're interested in any explanation.

  • I would like to donate organs, but in saying that I probably wouldn't do it. After death, possibly, before...unlikely.

I know if I was the person needing an organ I would question myself why. Why does no one consider people in my situation, or people with my condition whatever it may be. But I think people like me would come 'round realativley quickly if it were a family member or friend. Mmmmmm yeah.

  • I think that organ donation is a great thing for people to do. I have heard of some people saying that the organs could carry cellular memories to the recipient's body, but I'm not sure I believe that. I think organ donation is the best thing a person can do for another person because it can save lives. :)

  • I am really scared now. I promise to make a ton of money and give it to my daughter. P.S. I introduced my buddy Scotti to your show, and we do surmise you are in fact staggeringly brilliant.

  • If a rich japanese person needs an organ some unlucky soul in china will either be killed or shipped off still alive to japan ugh its crazy, i hope this isnt true its savage.

  • In the Bible, we do have Adam "donating" his rib to Eve. Just a thought:)

  • I am so glad that you are for donation. I am getting ready in two weeks to be a living kidney donor to a friends husband. I think more people should do this.

  • This whole subject makes me uncomfortable and agitated, I'm gonna leave it for now I think!.

I apologise if I came across as a bad person in my answers.

  • On the other hand, if I was alive and I could donate something to someone else then I might well do that.

It is a combination of the fact that it makes me uncomfortable and a case of I would need the choice.

If my organs were going to someone that had recently robbed from an old dear and scared her half to death then I would rather that person die than have my organs. Sorry if that's wrong, but like you said, it is MY choice!

  • In essence I am quite selfish about my body. I don't get naked in public, I don't like the idea of someone sawing into me and removing parts of my body. I feel very strongly that this will not happen to me.

Yes I would like an organ if I needed one, but to me I am just more important than other ppl. My needs come first on this issue. I can think of many scenarios that I might be willing to sacrifice my life for another but I wouldn't give them my tissues.

  • Not all atheists bevlieve it's all over when you die. Buddhists (which deny the existance of any creator god) think it's (simplyfied) just like getting out of one car and getting into another. :-)

  • When RRS asked for new projects I suggested an organ donor drive for the reasons you argue for, plus it's demonstration of an ethical dilemma Atheists (pretty much) can't have, unlike their Atheist Blood Drive which struck me (an atheist) as purely manipulative of charity for the sake of the Atheism with no comment on theism.

  • and last comment...good? bad? don't know. But i do know that when people get that close to death they become very humble...knowing they may not live anymore. it can be a very humbling experience. also..my stats were u.s.a based.

  • approximately 20 people die a day waiting for an organ. Most people would want an organ donated for themselves, father, mother, friend, kids if they needed one..so yeah it is a bit selfish to say.."well dont need one now and neither do my family and friends. So , Im against it."

  • That is a pretty good reason to not donate. We just did a video about organ donation. thats how i came across this video. keep in mind that only 1 out of 80 people meet the criteria for organ donating. So if u want to donate..seriously the odds are against you..other than possibly your corneas.

  • i'm not that enthusiastic to the idea of organ donation, because i fear that for all the good it will do by donating my giblets, it will only end up in someone like George Best who will literally piss it away. this might seem selfish but is it anymore selfish then the behavior of george best?.........

  • There are a lot of cases where people have some of the memories of the person that the organ came from.

There is a case that a girl solved the murder of her doner from her dreams. It's a true story.

  • When I saw 'organ donation', I was so hoping it was a song, lol. Oh well...Keep up the videos! : )

  • When I was considering donating, I asked my family what they thought and my dad is uncomfortable with me donating organs. I figured since my remains are more my families then mine when i die, they really should have a say and i wouldn't want to cause them any unnecessary pain. Now that I'm married, my husband will be the closest person to me if i were to die and since both of us are all for donation, we are listed as donors. I think consideration for loved ones is a big part of it.

  • Its always an interesting & highly personal issue on if you should donate your organs or blood.

Personally, I donate every 4 months as invited to by the NHS (yes I'm a Brit), am also on the Bone Marrow donor list & organ donor list & heres why.

What if I needed something from someone someday, or someone I love? Would those of you objecting to giving object to receiving?

Plus if those that believe its against gods will do this...why'd He make it possible?

  • that guy you talked to gave you such a half-ass reason why he wouldn't want to donate his organs. if he doesn't like the idea of his dna living on after his death then he shouldnt have kids. life is about reproduction, like spreading your genes to keep your family growing after your death and so that explanation he gave you just goes down the drain. btw, we have the same name :P

  • Yeah, I agree that explanation is weird. If he had an identical twin, he'd go insane thinking about how there's another human being out there with his exact DNA.

  • Atheism has connotations, sorry if I misunderstood the term.

  • What he means is that some atheists do believe in an afterlife. Many Buddhists, for instance, are atheists, but they believe in an afterlife.

If you mean materialism/naturalism, then yes, the best evidence form those views indicates "you" and "I" won't survive beyond our brains!

  • I would do if I got paid for it.

  • I will not donate my organs. When you donate you've only been dead for a nano-second before they cut out your eyes, heart, etc. It has to be "living" tissue or organs. I don't want my death sped along simply because I'm down for organ donation. I don't trust the system.

  • Understandable. But I don't think that they would use your organs unless they were sure they couldn't help you (am I naive?). Just because your tissue is still usable doesn't mean you can come back from the dead and use it...

  • Having to have died recently wouldn't have any bearing on how quickly you died. It could take three years or five seconds for you to die, but the point is the organs have to be removed shortly after that time, not after you start dying. Anyway, your doctor won't be involved in allocating organs

  • Actually in order to donate your organs you have to die from brain death. Which is normally around 1 in 80 deaths. So even if you were a donor you might not get to donate. Secondly, when your in the hospital on a ventilator..it isnt a nano second. They have to make sure your brain dead...just being on the ventilator can take more than ten minutes.

  • I honestly can't understand why you'd not want to donate organs. Even the reasons you gave ring hollow to me.

  • Hmm, my sisters went to give blood recently to give their DNA information into a worldwide database for people that have blood cancer, so they can find fitting persons for back spinal transplantation, or how ever you call this kind of donation to save the blood cancer sich ones life... but they didn't find the fitting part for that 12 year old boy... he finally died...

  • Hi, interesting topic... well ok, maybe we Europeans tend to think a little bit different in many things, but not on this one... everyone wan't help if he's sick and so giving blood as long as you are healthy your self makes a lot of sense and I was giving blood when I was some years younger and more healthy... besides that maybe I got a bit lazy... there is an other reasong for not going to give blood anymore... I have to take some medicine since a few years...

  • Don't take your organs to heaven... heaven knows we need them here!

  • I was born with Spina Bifida, a birth defect. Growing up with it I've concluded that we inherit our bodies, we don't 'own' them. And we pass them on to our children, and in this case, to those who need a working organ.

I think people can get nervous about this because it destroys barriers we set up against each other. If I can give my (literal) heart to someone, what is left that separates one human from another?

  • I think it's kind of strange giving my Organ to someone, but on the other hand, i'll be dead so it doesn't really matter that much.

  • I believe it is because of religious implications. A lot of what we consider to be unusual to us is a conditioning brought upon us by living in a Western climate since youth. Organ Harvesting is bizarre from a Christian POV (not all Christians represent this) because the body is a gift from God. An example is how Jehovah's Witnesses do not believe in blood transfusions, so the influence is a trickle down effect.

  • I would like to donate my organ to you...kidding, I couldnt let that one go...I know what a sexist pig, sorry. Your smart and beautiful, I can listen (and watch) you talk all day.

    The Misfit

  • I was joking people, lighten up.

    The Misfit

  • i would like to give up my parts but you know the doc might think my parts are worth more in someone else, im sure they get payed well for a transplant and they can also sell the parts they take out of me, so when it comes to me making it on not i dont want the worth of my parts to have anything to do w/it.

  • As has already been said, doctors have no involvement in the allocation or harvesting of donor organs, others are in charge

  • I've always felt it's a no-brainer. You're dead, why not help someone else? But someone presented an interesting point. If you're in critical condition, and the dr. could fight to keep you alive or allow you to pass without any suspicion of malpractice, and there was a high demand for organs, would a dr. do all he could to save you or would he consider even for a moment to let you pass for the sake of the others? It's a scary though unlikely. I still feel donating is the better thing to do.

  • I don't believe in that 'conspiracy theory'. The doctor's job is to help you as good as he/she can. The organ donation process is organized by another organization, and those people will only show up when your 100% dead.

Besides, would a doctor 'kill' you when he/she isn't even certain that your organs are suitable for donation? Since there are a lot of rules and exclusions.

Just my 2 cents ;) But I get your point of view. People tend to be scared about stuff like that.

  • Yeah. I guess people just freak out about the thought of themselves lying cold on a table getting cut open and having bits and pieces taken out of them. I rather like the idea. But then again I'm obsessed with horror films so...

  • The market in organs has been thoroughly suppressed. So what you have today is not because of people's mindsets but rather because it has been outright restricted.

Google 'walter block health economics'. You will find a podcasts on mises org from that.

  • I will answer this w/a question..In the Hospital(E.R.) there are 4 persons who desperately in need of an organ transplant and here walks a healthy person, should the doctors get(kill?) the one healthy person to save the 4....of course not....right? Morality...is a big facor...in this case...but back to the original topic, yes, sure it is your duty as a citizen of earth to save your own..your spirit will love you for that....God Bless!

  • Hmm..would I give my organs to Hitler..Charles Manson..O.J Simpson..Bin Laden..terrorists...child abusers...suicide bombers...hmm Why not ?

  • Hardly seems like suicide bombers will want your organs anyway! Besides if you really think this argument stands up for organ donation, then doesn't it extend to all medical treatment? Should dying people be left alone until some modern day inquisitor has declared them free of corruption and sin! Or do you actually believe that most people are child abusers, terrorists etc?

  • Would I give my organs to good people and bad people ? Yes,why not ?

  • Is that all you can say?

  • ..Yep,that is all I can say about dead meat.

  • Commment ! Behave !!

  • I wouldn't mind giving my organs after death even if the other person might get some of my memories. Either I'll be dead and it won't matter to me or I'll have a soul. But If I have a soul, I don't think my identity would be dependent on any particular physical organ. As for donating blood I kind of have a problem with needles. Just my thoughts. Hope you feel better soon

  • Already gave you my heart ! :}

  • I believe some people do not donate organs because you have no say to what the organs will be used for. They can basically take your body and send it to medical school to be hacked up and practiced on, or use parts of you for purposes that might be against your personal beliefs. Saving a person's life sounds good but if you really don't know what your body will be used for or to whom it may go to u might not feel comfortable signing your organs away

  • Surely having your body used to teach new doctors would ultimately (you'd hope!) save lives?!?! Yay? Nay? Lots of people DID stop donating in the UK years ago when it was discovered that to make money for our health system they were selling donated organs to America!! Hmmm!

  • I think you do have a say though. Can't you donate to a. those in need of transplants, or b. to "science:" that is often used in medical school which is also of use to society. I don't think if you put donate on your drivers license you sign your remain rights away, just organs for transplants

  • That's what I thought

  • I think it's preety amazing what the liver, kidneys, etc. can do. All those chemical and physical processes. I have no need to believe that the liver or the heart need to also keep memories to be cool and amazing. And if every organ can store memories, then what do we need the brain for. Claims like that fulfill some people's psychological needs to believe certain things but have no basis in fact, and can't be tested in practice.

  • I know that's a rather pessimistic outlook but I think its much better to live life assuming that their is not an afterlife.... than allow yourself to get sucked into a horrible life living for something that you don't even know exists. Or as they say.. Carpe diem! Sieze the day! Enjoy each and every day to its maximum potential. Everything else doesn't matter. :)

  • As for life after death... to me the fact that every single process in our bodies and minds can be explained in physical terms truly hurts the idea of spirit or soul. Sure its a nice idea, but I do not believe any evidence for it exists and its simply wishful thinking.

  • I think its absolutely insane to not want to donate your organs after you die. To me it seems really selfish and short sighted.... I think we should all do our best to help one another the best we can. I think anyone in need of an organ would gladly donate their organs for someone else... we need to show empathy for our fellow man and do the right thing when the time comes.

  • I don't think it is a rational choice. I mean you're dead what do you need organs for?? But they think.. what if?.?. so they are selfish and keep them and those who are waiting for that organ will die.

  • I think it's pretty amazing that cells all work together to create something bigger. I don't know if that's true, but it would be quite amazing to get memories like that.

Would it change anything or make you not want to donate?

  • I've read about some cases, where, after having a heart transplant, people get new memories that originally pertained to the heart's owner. Such as knowing the lyrics to a song they've never heard... or calling the organ donor's parent's "mom and dad". What do you think about that? It seems like every cell in the body is just as conscious as the entire person. ;)

  • "I've read about some cases, where, after having a heart transplant, people get new memories that originally pertained to the heart's owner."

Haha, yeah... complete and utter bullshit, of course. Cellular memory? Yeah, right...
