  • this is bloody amazing

  • use a cheap 2 sided mirror ($6). 2 similar cameras. same shutter speed, same aperture. Make sure they are lined up (use a cheap video channel mixer onto one monitor...opacity). Use ND filter on one of them ( don't use a different aperture...it would change the depth of field and create blotches in post)...You can sync the cameras using a cheap wired remote control. use photomatix batch encode to get the effect desired. Photoshop CS5 sucks, there is no batch encode for "merge to hDR" .

  • Great look guys. What programs did you use in post?

  • now you can create HDR videos with just one camera! Click here on my channel to check, or /watch?v=y6_9IkpFOkU

  • @hyperactiveSVK You can achieve this effect using rigs that allow the cametas to be in the same positions, or he is lying and used one camera and edited the clip and duplicated the footage and over exposed and under exposed either clip then over the clip allowing for this effect.

  • これを逆に応用して荒くてリアルなゲームグラが出来るかも。

    最近のやつは現実より小奇麗だからな。

  • @MrTAMPOPO 確かにそうですね・・・

  • enfu

  • Superbe - how do you process all those frames - manually, and one by one??? Superb stuff, incroyable

  • Nice! :)

    Thanks for the help!

    I will buy a Canon!

  • 1.5 , -1.5?

  • Nice. Now if someone could just make a sensor that could capter 10 F-stops, we would not need all the complexity :)

  • Can you do a HDR video focusing more on the contract of how far you can go with Whites and Blacks (e.g. can you get black and white PURE black and white, not gradscale, but still retain detail?)

  • this is doesnt have that glow around the edges

  • Unique video.

  • No pics of the rig? disappointing.... video looks good otherwise, a few flicker issues but still very good.

  • weird.. thats awesome

  • People in HDR looks like 3D

  • ty

  • Any updates on this?

  • how can u record same image from 2 cameras? ...i mean how you position ...couse when u takin a picture u usualy use tripod to take few pictures in different expositions ..but how to take video from 2 cameras at the same spot? :O

  • @hyperactiveSVK Did you not read the description? Please tell me your not that stupid...

  • @hyperactiveSVK using a mount or they just put it side by side...

  • @hyperactiveSVK i think they just copied the original then put them together

  • @pichumaxy

no that's not possible with 8 bit footage

  • @hyperactiveSVK

A beam splitter, cuts the light in half and processes it to two different cameras, so they each get an identical picture. Then, they make one camera overexpose the shot then set the other one to underexpose it. Then they composite them together.

  • Reminds me of Half Life 2

  • More to come soon...Posted in September 2010.

  • I MUST TRY!!!

  • How can the two cameras record exatly the same scene when the are placed next to each other?

I mean... when shooting "normal" pictures for HDR the final image will have lots of artefacts if the tripod is moved between the single exposures

  • @hunikat They are capturing pretty much 95% of the same video, you just clip out what wasn't overlapped and upscale a tiny bit to get rid of the gaps. At least that's what I assume.

  • @malcolmgetscrazy Thanks!

  • @hunikat In the description it says "Video is captured on two Canon 5D mark II DSLRs, each capturing the exact same subject via a beam splitter." so you get the light from a single opening and a series of mirrors redirect the same light to each of the cameras.

  • @ParanormalEnities TY very much, I should have read that myself!

  • I would like to see the camera setup, please?

I'm quite sure that soon movies are coming in HDR!

  • looks Pixaresce

  • Great video keep up the good work.

  • It looks like GTA 4!

  • siiick

  • Very impressive and quite inspirational! Shows the full potential of a canon 5d.

We've just finished making our own feature length film on the 5d and it helped us a lot. Trailer is at

    youtube.com/watch?v=bvceRTW83CQ

  • CTFxC FTW!!

  • I don't think that you need 2 cameras for do this. With one camera you can make one movie and after that with your video editor make different exposures of same movie and "mix it" hovever you want.

  • @Sisuvision nope.

  • @Sisuvision Nope. When something is over/underexposed, the information in that area simply isn't there. Changing the exposure on a completely black area won't magically make it turn into a perfectly exposed object.

  • @Sisuvision No you can't do that. Maybe if camera shot raw video. But no cameras do. files would be too large. Security cameras often do HDR by taking 2 different exposures at the same time. Normal exposure and under exposure and mix the images on fly so you still get 30 fps.

My 6yo security camera has HDR I don't know domestic cameras don't have such a feature for video.

  • @Sisuvision its not the same rising exposure on a software. than actually filming at different settings

  • Powered by Cryengine 10 :D

  • To learn how to achieve true HDR photographs with your own camera, please search out Pro Photo Results / HDR on YouTube

  • :S I don't get why anyone would want HDR. It looks weird, completely flattens everything. The city looks pretty cool but not even realistic.

  • yeah, the cityscape look great. but the guy looked dirtier and unrealisticaly skin toned.

  • looks like infamous,wow

  • buildings look nice, but that guy - he looks like a hobo

  • @B1SCOOP lmao yea

  • Is there any feature films that have been shot this way or added the HDR effect in post? Any answer is appreciated! :)

  • here is how you do you do it with only one camera and different exposures, including life action:

cannot post urls, so look under dutchla

  • where can I buy this camera and what it´s the price???

  • @Manufummi the camera is sold many places like Amazon or best Buy for about 2,500 dollars each. (body only version.)

  • whats the name of that gtaiv mod?

  • If you can get rid of the un-natural glow (common with many HDR photos) you may have something great, useable.

  • Almost 1 year on, "more to come soon" never happened

  • Once we have perfected HDR, we can have a better capture of people clips. For now, uncanny valley much?

  • Pfff, everyone knows HDR stands for Herp Derp Range.

  • fucking awesome

  • How on earth did you manage to pan both cameras so smoothly at the same time?

  • would like to see more

  • Try Flare for iPhone for an HDR video effect on your iPhone. getflare.com

  • lol, look at his mouth at 0:46

  • For similar effects: try ketamine

  • @pockthehairy shrooms work also

  • Yes this is so genius, I love HDR, I tired it on still images, I think video HDR is excerpt from the Idea of the human eyes, if we close one eye or open both eyes it wouldnt make ghost image, I also have seen a prof photographer who shoot sports with 3 DSLR mounted on a tripod togather side by side, he did that to creat a high megapixel images, when he release the sutter botton the 3 of the DSLRs take the same shot, I dunno if this can let someone of you guys catch a clue

  • Excellent!

  • FUCK HDR!!!!!!!

  • I absolutely applaud your work taking DSLR video to the very next level and sharing your secret for the rest of us to experiment and grow the genre.

  • how do you match the images from the two cameras so well when the subject (the person) is so close to the cameras?

  • @billclinton They use a splitter. One of the cameras is actually at a 90 degree angle from the scene and filming a 45° piece of glasson which the scene reflects. the other camera is in front of the scene and films thfough the glass.

  • @bogossedu31100 you'll need 2 5d's to do this.

  • @Dune1884 No, i don´t think so. The difference betweed a 5D an a "normal" camera is not important here. The question is how they stitch this video together.

  • @DeVirginer he asked of how he could do it with a 5d. just told him that he'll need 2 cameras.

  • @Dune1884 Okay.

  • I would love to see something from a 3 exposure HDR.. like under + proper + over exposures :)

  • landscapes look great, but people don't look good

  • løl_äñýÔNë_wãÑNå_chÂt_wÏth_mÈ_i_fèEl_so_lóNêlý_tÔÐäy┌

  • there's a couple things I dont understand. mainly, how did you combine the two, and also, shouldnt there be different perspectives for each camera?

  • Mind Blowing man!

  • They should make a film shot entirely in HDR....that wouldn't get boring

  • The best way to shoot HDR photography and video is with the 3D-BS (beam-splitter) Rig. Visit them online at - 3D Film Factory (dot) com

  • anyone else notice a "flicker" in the image?

  • Looks nice. I like the landscape/cityscape shots. You benefit from the reduced noise and increased sharpness that the tonemapping algorithm is giving you.

However I dislike when your human subject moves his arms, you notice the highlight / low-pass interfere with the surrounding image. Perhaps a bit too much local adaptation.

I can see there being slight synchronisation issues when filming fast moving objects, that will really cause a headache.

    Still, extremely impressed by this.

  • which beam splitter did you use? and how much does one typically go for? also was the any special mounting setup for it

  • How the f**k did you do it? O_O

  • @syedahmedrazaabidi I'm saying that HDR looks like radioactive barf. It makes horrible pictures look worse and good pictures look terrible. It is so hard for someone to produce anything in HDR and have it be respected in the art world. In short, it's a gimmick.

  • Comment removed

  • What software do you use to combine the HDR videos?

  • God, that looks horrible.

  • I wish I could see like that with my eyes :D

  • MIND FUCK! THIS IS HOW INCEPTION SHOULD HAVE BEEN FILMED LMAO

  • @algernonlover15 hahaha yeah

  • @algernonlover15 only would take 5 years to render

  • @algernonlover15 Good call Jerayr

  • @algernonlover15 dude it was, everything shot on actual 35mm film has even more latitude than this maybe 100 times more, they just brought it down on coloring but the effect is there the whole time

  • HOLY SHIT

  • I don't give a shit about both exposures, I just want to see the damn HDR video.

  • i just bought a cannon t2i can any one show me how to do the video part i want to incorporate this in my music videos

  • how did you managed shoot 2 cameras with the same povs at the same time? kinda physically impossible?!

  • @vadimggg seriously! I'm so lost!

  • @leviphillip i dont understand how this HDR video was made. If they used 2 cameras to record at -2 and +2 exposures then combine them in post, then how is that they aligned so perfectly? there is a mentioning of "beam splitter", what is that ? Is that some sort of mirror device that lets 2 cameras to appear to be shooting from the same spot?

  • @vadimggg its easy to understand its just a mirror which reflects 50% of the light and lets 50% of the light pass thru

    en.wikipedia (dot) org/wiki/Beam_splitter

  • What city is that?

  • credits to canon 5D mark ii!

  • It makes it look like a video game.

  • watch?v=d7uQHvqr6k0 This professional music video clip made with 5d mark ii in January 2011. Director: Altan Dönmez

  • Whats the music?

  • Which programs did you use?

  • Simply incredible! Especially second movie (more natural).

  • interesting effect

  • better than crysis maxed out

  • I tried to achieve HDR with only one camera. It's not perfect but it kinda works:

    watch?v=v5l1EiRwiZ8

  • Hey, I am wrong, or he just put one cam on another. That is easy with large distace, becuase matter of 10cm isn't noticeable, or in post production he just moved one vid a little bit down and another up. About the guy i think he went as far as he could made the same zoom and do the same postproduction trick. Is it sensible??

  • i just subscribed...wow...But what software did you use to make your video HDR?

  • yeah i was thinking about the exactly same method of capturing hdr-movie!

    now i see it works!

    awesome!

    now i need two 5dII :D

    where to get such beamsplitter?

  • How about using 3 footages as normally HDR photography does?

  • In Soviet Russia... HDR video looks awesome

  • Nice, the flickering makes it look like an old film.

  • Most of you say it has that digital render look and makes the guy look like a video-game character. I think the new Tron movie should have incorporated this concept since it is a movie about being inside a computer/digital world.

I think the guys who came up with this idea need to work on it some more because while it looks nice and all it does not have that realistic look. This kind of filming would be good for commercials/exhibition videos and nature documentaries.

  • Are two cameras really necessary? Can't you have the same video, and post-produce one over exposed and one under exposed?

  • @MrPacMan36

In order to get enough dynamic range in one exposure you need to record in RAW, but cameras right now can't record video in RAW because they aren't powerful enough to handle the image sizes at the speeds necessary for video (at least 24 frames per second)

  • @mackjr72

Ahh, ok thanks for the explanations, been wondering that for a while.

  • @MrPacMan36

won't do the trick, just like the HDR photography you need to take different pictures. Post production is not the same, since you are editing the same footage rather than having something recorded naturally.

  • @htjmartin it is possible with timelapse, but here, cars move, so it isn;t possible

  • OMG :O amazing !!!

  • does anyone knows what software can do this hdr video?

  • what kind of software was used to make this?

  • WOWOWOWOWOW

  • tutorial?

  • @roystreetmedia no tutorial just think

  • very nice

  • i want real life to look like that

  • youtube.com/watch?v=iyWV_tNDd8Y

  • Check out this skate video shot this way.

  • Ok I understand how to do this on photoshop cs5 but I cant seem to understand how to do this with video only because one would think you'd have to repeat the same action with all exposures to get this effect.... Is that true?

  • @OKLAHOMALOVE2 No, you'd shoot with 2 cameras simultaneously side-by-side, one in the underexposed setting, and one in overexposed setting.

  • @kingsneverdie WOW!!! This is just great!!!

  • gorgeous. this is how music videos should be shot from now on.

  • Very nice. I've been experimenting and posting HDRV footage for quite some time now and am very glad to see someone getting a couple cams together. So far mine have only been one camera HDRV's either at 60p sampled down to 30 after HDR, split sensor HDRV, or a static scene captured multiple times(in one I introduced actors in the final footage which made for very interesting ghosts in an HDR scene). I look forward to further footage.

  • WOW! WOW and OMG!

  • what the, interesting, it looks very cool, not realistic, but like sin city or something. oh yea and i agree it looks better than real life :)

  • where do you find the time to do all this?

    Great ideas

  • fantastic video, keep up the good work... It looks like a game trailer :D especiolly the first image.

  • crazyyyyyyyyyy

  • people should start using this technology, to shoot movies, more often

  • it looks like a game :P

  • This video glows in the daytime. Has Soviet Montage try 2 exposure level with 1 SLR vs. using 2 SLR with 1 special lens to make this video?

  • For people shots, it looks terrible.

    The rest looks good.

  • Looks like a video game character xD

  • who gave finger down?? wtf

  • Mindblowing

  • diggnation brought me here :)
