People cosplay to express their love for characters, stories and to showcase their abilities such as costuming, sewing, improvisation, posing and dedication. You can't really just jump into the world of cosplay and understand it. You have to grow attached to a series and a specific character, work hard on an outfit, and your your efforts will be rewarded at Conventions by pridefully strutting around.

I must say though, as someone not into the culture, I was impressed by your open-mindedness. :3
