Dedicated to my brothers Sa'ad and Asad. And my friends who've proven themselves as brothers: Fahad, Shahzaib, Shareef, Abdullah, Dawood, Suleman... I know they're not seeing this, but I love you all <3
I can't believe anyone would say these are not The Drifters when Johnny Moore is obviously singing in this performance. Johnny Moore had the longest tenure of any of the Drifters. (He sang Under The Boardwalk, Saturday Night At The Movies, At The Club, I'll Take You Home and all of the British Drifter hits (Kissing In The Back Row Of The Movies, You're More Than A Number In My Little Red Book, Can I Take You Home Little Girl). The only other "real" Drifters are
FFS, that's not The Drifters. perhaps they are the sons/cousins/assorted mates of The Drifters? Reminds me of the night I went to see Heatwave in Chester. I said to my mate, 'weren't Heatwave a bunch of black guys?' as I perused the stage dominated by white lads....
@TheBelly58 Do your research mate, Johnny Moore was one of the first Drifters and has been the only Drifter to stay the course (Johnny being the lead vocals on Saturday Night at the Movies, Kissing in the Back Row, More than a number, down on the beach etc etc, but no! There's no zimmer frames or oxygen on stage and some people don't actually live forever, this line up however was as original as could be considering the R + R hall of famer himself 'Johnny Moore was still there.
Mate you just embarrassed yourself - anyone who knows the Drifters would Identify Johnny Moore as you don't have a clue he is the 2nd from your right. lol!
does anyone know the basic chord progression to this song, trying to worki it out by ear, any help would be much appreciated. I think the first chord is A
I think it means that they must act like sister and brother to stop the people of the town from talking. Love the Drifters and glad I was dancing to them in the 70's having been born in 1962 grew up with the best music.
There seems to be a common misconception that the late Jonny Moore was the original singer of this track, but I had always thought it was Bill Fredricks on the original. Then after that it was always Clyde Brown who sang it (better than the original in my opinion). This guy, lamarr, doesnt even come close to doing justice to this song. It seems to be playing in a higher key than usual too. Surely JM himself would have done this song more justice. Why only have him on backing vocals?
@Levorock The original lead vocalist on this track was Bill Fredricks i was in backing band at time of this record release and Bill did a great job with this song.
Yer great song my favourite one from the drifters, I admired Johnny Moore too but whoever is on lead it still sounds amazing!, thanx for uploading....ps[ check out my humble version which is slightly quicker.]
Mart. I was very glad to find this video and give to Phil L. Glad he copied it for you. It's a lot of years since the Talk of the North where I was DJ for around 4 years. I know when I played the dvd to Pete he couldn't get over the state of his hair ........ not like him to be vain. It's also great to see 'moonface' the legendary Mr Moore. Hope you are keeping well. Paul
No insest here must be about two lovers who for whatever reason cannot been seen to be lovers in public. Wonderful song, yes Fredriks great voice but when we used to see them it was Johhy's "main man " Clyde who sang lead ..RIP Johhny
@vlsp7982 Hi mate, There's always been a connotation about these lyrics but my interpretation is 2 lovers living in a small town where everyone knows everyone's business and as friends they are as close as sister and brother but for whatever reason keep the truth a secret.
Great video even if it doesn't feature Johnny. So glad he's not around to see Treadwell's wannabe Drifters. Saw them at the Alex in Bham last year. They were OK but nothing like the Drifters! For an encore they did an O'Jays song! LOL - love the O'Jays but why not A Drifter's song?? Hadn't they learnt enough songs?
Sorry - I didn't mean Johnny wasn't there but he's not the lead singer. This was their first comeback hit in the UK and they didn't have a follow up until they switched back to Jonny on lead.
It was Bill spot on and you`re right about Pete he still has a great voice, saw him doing a motown show back in sep and he was on top form.Luckily the great Drifters music lives on
The Drifters will always be around but I must admit songs like Saturday Night at the Movies and Kissing in the Back Row do really miss Johnny's voice, very distinctive style.
Godfather to my 18 year old son (now a guitarist) RIP Johnny.
Yeah, sorry jackHNv paulhamerton is absolutely correct, Johnny was a great singer but each Drifter had their own songs and Sister was Bill Fredricks if memory serves me right (a bit before my time, the line up when I joined was Johnny, Ben.E.King, Clyde Brown and Joe Blunt)
But Pete Lemar (singing lead here) is a brilliant singer and equally matches Clyde's performance.
@mart22222 yes you are right Bill Fredricks did sing lead on the recording but I bet must of us (old) dirifters fans know Clyde Brown as singing lead and the guy on here does brill although I never saw him live. Johnney is the man and the line up doing the rounds now are no where near as entertaining or as vocally equal.
I saw the Drifters a couple of times in the mid-70s when their big hits were still pretty recent, and Johnny Moore was singing lead, so I assumed it was him on the record, as he does sound very similar.
im only 25 but grew up with my mum playing the drifters every sunday morning know every word to everyone of their songs - used to hate my mum playing them but realise now they are true legends!!!! best song tho - ur more than a number in my little red book!
Hi Martin! I hear Clyde Brown is retired these days not doing mjjch. Candy says he's planning to gig with the old guys in Vegas soon but we have not been able to confirm. Seems he's neatly tucked away somewhere in Ohio not touring or recording. No fan club to speak of either. Apparently he's hung it all up. Great performer. Too bad he never lifted off.
The earlier comment didn't post so if it's here twice you'll know it's not senility on my part.
shame about Clyde retiring, he was an excellent performer and a really nice guy too.
I thought he'd pretty much decided to stay in Merseyside with Sue unless she went to the States.
you say he's getting back with all the old guys, what line up would that be I wonder, Johnny's gone now and the last time I saw Ben e live he looked like he lost it slightly, I guess Billy Lewis and Joe Blunt.
Rumor has it he's in Ohio living with a woman who calls herself Elizabeth Brown. We have been unable to confirm. Suspect health (death?) of his mom brought him back to the states. Just seems like the guy has evaporated into thin air. I'm sure others wish, as do we, he would come out perhaps with his own version of the group? :)
What am I doing now? mainly teaching but seriously thinking of getting back out there, what year was Bognor? if it was between 85 and 91, I was probably there.
This song takes me back to being in my parents car and driving down to Bognor Regis for our summer hols. We used to stay at the Butlins camp there. I always had the time of my life and cried my eyes out when we had to leave. Happy days.
Clyde Brown or Mcfatter although academic since Brown left in 85 and Mcfatter a long time before that in this Johnny Moore line up and actually it did fine doing approx 250 concerts a year.
I apologise for my earlier comments, I have watched this a few times now and It is good. i have actually bought the DVD with him on. No Jm but the group that were doing the rounds after he died, it is really good.
Hey Mart perhaps ya can play the drums fo me when I'm famous lol. Check my version of a drifters song - SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL like to hear your comments
Now THIS is how a top vocal group operates. You use the vocal ranges of the various singers in the 'lead' position, as the needs of the song dictate.

I don't think the lead singer was born when the Drifters first released this song. unless he has aged really well
