  • I don't think a better musician has ever walked the earth. Everything he does is just, wow.

  • Shawn lane> Alan holdsworth

  • This song really makes me happy

  • that guitar in the background is just for show, Shawn only has one guitar that can handle his speed

  • @neoshred666 Look up Hardcase; That guitar will prove you wrong

  • @unwantedmonkey you're clever, i was totally serious -_-

  • @neoshred666 Who's the one who can't make an obvious sarcastic statement? Yeah, thanks for the compliment.

  • Shawn is a god. I still don't believe he is dead. He recorded an album before he "died" and it was to amazing to share with the world, now he sits atop Mount Olympus listening to this amazing album which we will never hear. Rest in peace Shawn, you were my inspiration to do what I do... too bad I never got to see you perform live.

  • No its just supposed to me MI, its musicians institute, just that, not of technology.

  • It is quite amazing to see how he effortlessly fills in all the virtuosic piano parts, almost playfully pulling off technical trickery of the sort you night expect at a Liszt recital

  • MIT=Musicians Institute of Technology in this context.

  • he is a genius!

  • wait u mean mit as in ma inst tech?

  • the way he uses augmented is scary, especially the bit thats not shred!

  • I like how Shawn pops up at the end of the video with a look on his face like, yeah all that awesome really happened! Shawn was too awesome :(

  • I think it's kind of funny. Shawn hires people to play an instrument, and then rapes them on the instrument he hired them to play!

  • @bearfeymous

    HAHAAAHAHAHA

    lol

  • i cant even understand the drum beat but it works perfectly amazing haha

  • When someone talks to you about one kicking ass guitarist,it's not matter which one, Malmsteen, Batio, Cooley, Gilbert, Romeo, Petrucci, You can be proud for talking about Lane's Playing, like something out of this world!

  • /joke

Did he have to play the hard part for the keyboard player? :P

  • how bittersweet for the keyboardist.

  • So beautiful song T__T°

  • 3:35 - Fucking Great!!!

    I love Shawn Lane's music!

    He's the man!

    R.I.P. S.L.

  • I will always always love this music.

  • You know, I just came here after listening to bunch of Malmsteen videos, and there's a ridiculous amount of arguments on almost all of them. On Shawn videos the comments are actually intresting and fun to read.

  • I bet if they let him, shawn could have jumped through every instrument during a single song

  • Great drumming

  • what chords are the ones of the intro?

  • @yogsothoth2099 Hi.. Dminor (2 bars 4/4) F (2 bars) Dmin (2bars) F (2bars) C (half bar or 2/4) Amin half plus full bar or 6/4),C (half bar or 2/4) Amin half plus full bar or 6/4) back to Dmin in 6/4 piano riff.

  • @jsivna just the triads? no tensions? tnx for you response =)

  • which delay or reverb did he use?

  • @splendora As far as I remember, he get's that sound from using 4 amps at once.

  • @splendora Line 6 units i think

  • @splendora You have already gotten the right answer I see. But to clarify it. Earlier in his career he used 4 amps, all having the same input signal but receiving the input from the guitar at different moments making it sound somewhat like a delay unit with 4 repeats. Later in his career (with Hellborg for example) he often used the Line 6 DL4, sometimes more than just one unit at once...

  • @hsoux33 ok, thanks dude for the answer. that's weird, four amps in the meantime woh. sounds good though!

  • could someone please tell me the chord progrssion shawn plays on the piano the second time he plays it?

  • @boldymatic Hi .. its Dminor,(band jam 4 bars of 6/4 before God plays the higher octave in Dmin,another 4 bars 0f 6/4) Gminor (4 bars) Fmaj7 (4 bars) Aminor (3bars) then bass descends in tri-tones off an AminMaj7,one bar 6/4 ( I think?! :-o) that's close anyway.. hope this helps :)

  • After listening to his stuff with Hellborg, for a long time, I finally decided to give Shawn's stuff a go. The piano theme reminded me of Chick Corea's "Senor Mouse", while the guitar theme was similar to "Abstract Logic" from the Hellborg record of the same name. It's good playing, and it's cool to see Shawn playing in an ensemble with no solos (weird!), but I'm still not that into it. It seems to lack the intensity that I love with his work with Hellborg.

  • 1:53 *jaw drops* O_O

    2:12 *Face explodes*

  • He was just as good on piano as on guitar. Theres a vid of him shredding piano at home on here too. The guy was a genius

  • My cat love this music. I'm serious.

  • I daydream all the time as to what this band would've done over the years had the stars aligned and poor Shawn stayed healthy. Nonetheless a truly underrated band that seemed to blend perfectly with Shawn's amazing gift. Damn good musicians in their own right.

  • Im more impressed with the drummer, he's pretty damn good.

  • Metallica...rank amateurs.

  • there is this ass hole on a shawn lane pentatonic lesson video that is trying to argue that shawn is unmusical and ripped eric johnson's tone off. that faggot needs to be impaled while the death theme is turned up full blast. R.I.P. shawn lane, B.I.H. all the ass holes that don't respect shawn lane.

  • @Fluffypopcicle LMFAO at the death theme part!

i wouldn't say shawn "ripped off" anything, nor do I hear EJ in his tone. but it's obvious EJ was a big influence. shawn especially loved that lick in "Cliffs of Dover" that you can hear Shawn use in some of his improvs. He also did a good cover of "Trademark" you can find on YT.

  • @alspageddi

yeah, i have seen the cover. they both have high respect for each other. a g3 with shawn lane eric johnson would have been insane. imo shawn's tone seems to resemble an allan holdsworth tone, but with higher gain. R.I.P. shawn lane.

  • What in the world did those in attendance have to say when his set was over? I can't even imagine, somebody would've had to scoop my balls and jaw up, shoot me with adrenaline to get my heart started again, and taken me to the ER. Thanks for posting vid. Love you Shawn.....

  • @bigtimmy1100 We said..Mr. Lane can I talk to you? Kidding aside I didnt sleep that night. I had heard about him, then got to meet him in a clinic then the show...He and Frank Gamble are my two favorite guitarists. Keep in mind back in the day you heard about musicians but it was much harder to get their music, my first hearing of him with my ears was this day after having heard the rumors for a long time.

  • Most people, even guitarists, are just not sophisticated enough listeners to even understand what the fuck he is doing. The guys who are like "its muzak" would say the same thing about Miles, Grappelli, Coltrane, Bill Evans, etc. Jazz/fusion on this level is incredibly complex re. the voice leading and harmony - there is so much going on here that goes by so quickly, its OK we forgive you. Shawn is not the place to start with fusion, he is where you end up at.

  • my top 5 best dead guitarists

    1. shawn lane

    2. chuck schuldiner

    3. dimebag darell

    4. jimmy hendrix

    5. SRV

lol please don't kill me for having dime, or chuck in front of SRV and hendrix :P

  • As long as Lane is number 1

  • @djziggurat

    yeah :)

  • @Fluffypopcicle CHUCK SCHULDINER :3

  • *shawn. im real happy lol

  • my girlfriend said she'd bang me if i find her a song she likes. im getting laid in ten minutes, thank you sean!!!! R.I.P

  • @connord12 *Shawn

  • @connord12 Sean?!?

  • @connord12 Wow you even managed to spell the man's name wrong. If that's what it takes for you to get sex from your girlfriend, I'm sorry for you. Hopefully you weren't being serious lol.

  • i wish this song was twice as long.

  • i love the melody at 1:28 so much.

  • shawn lane, dick dale, jimi hendrix, and allan holdsworth are my favorite guitar players.

  • Shawn is kind of confirming the idea that talent is innate moreso than learned. Geez, way too much talent to fit in one human! Unfair!

  • RIP Shawn Lane....the fattest i mean fastest guitar player ever.....

  • jajajaja

  • @xxxrickyxxx are you fucking kidding me ? too bad shawn couldn't have been kept alive, in exchange for you not being born. you're just an ignorant asshole looking for attention. i hope they play shawn lane at your funeral. if you knew anything about guitar at all you would know that shawn lane is THE best player there ever was, and ever will be.

  • @mooch666

You just fell victim to trolling my friend.

  • i didn't fall victim to anything, i know he's a troll. doesn't mean noone should say anything to him; let him be a douche. it's only embarassing to himself.

  • and all your good at is.. well i can't think off anything

  • love the grin on his face in the last second of the video...

it's like hes saying "yah that was pretty fuckin awsome"

  • Shawn on Keyboards?!?!... damn I just got skullfucked...

  • The bassist ! is he the same bassist who plays for John Petrucci live ? and also on Joe Satriani's "LIVE" DVD ?

  • No, this is Barry Bays on bass.

  • who is the drummer?!

  • Sean Rickman.

  • I read "allan rickman" for a second hahaha.

  • Those are jc120s in the back? What distortion pedals are he using? he gets a sweet tone

  • he used a westbury w20 overdrive and holmes mississippi blues master amp to get his tone

  • You can also see the gold single ended Gjika stereo amp he used for Powers Of Ten in the back ground when Shawn moves to the left of the stage right above those two guitars, so he might be using that for this vid.

  • was buckethead a GIT grad?

  • no, but he learned most of his stuff from Pebber Brown

  • glorious

  • ETHEREAL...

  • when did this performance take place???

  • my guess is around 92/93

  • At the Musicians Institute, Hollywood, on the 5th Feb 1993.

Buckethead was in the audience for this gig, as was Scott Henderson (and probably many more 'known' guitarists).

  • shawn lane is one of the greatest guitarists ever.

    but he's better at piano.

    fuck my life..

  • Hah believe it or not he actually started out on piano.

  • ya i know this lol

  • @asharp12 haha great comment so true

  • @asharp12 Indeed; me too...

  • i come back to this after a year and it still blows my mind!

  • you said come and blow in the same sentence.

  • How can you be a of buckethead and not like Shawns music?

  • Amazing......

  • Ive grown to love Shawn over the years but i so wish he was still around,,,, id love to see what he could do today ;}

  • If he was still around today he could play the guitar with no hands... and the piano with his eyes

  • ROFL!!!

  • Every time he shreds the piano on this it gives me a mini panic attack. I knew he was an even more amazing pianist that he was a guitarist, but does he have to rub it in =p. R.I.P. I hope hes jammin with jaco in the upstairsland

  • I had the great pleasure of meeting Shawn in Southampton England back in 96.. Apart from a genius musician.. Such a very intellectual mind and a true gentleman!!

  • This guy is a f#cking genius. No question about it. And that is the least I can say.

  • The keyboard player was like "fuck off Shawn your making me look shit"

  • for all the people who commented about metallica kicking ass ,,,actually your all correct. metallica is beautiful, but if your talking quality of guitarists, then the only role kirk hammett will get is that of polishing shawns guitar case.

  • Of course, totally different genres though.

Metallica is one of the greatest metal bands ever to have roamed the Earth and Shawn likewise as a solo musician. Both have their place in my CD cabinet.

  • @dreamatorium very true haha

  • @dreamatorium shawn lane and kirk hammet should not even be in the same sentence lol

  • @dreamatorium so true

  • @dreamatorium hahahhahahahah niice

  • @dreamatorium The question they can be asking is "Shawn Lane can cover Metallica, but can Metallica cover Shawn Lane?" The answer is no...

  • @dreamatorium who cares man !! everyone has his own quAlity , i enjoy every type of music. If its good than its good. Sometimes i'm in the mood for shawn lane and sometimes i really wanna check out kirk shredding that guitar !! Music is no competition !!! how many times do I have to explain that to people !!??

  • 2:18 is my alltime fav part

  • Agreed, that bend is absolutely godly!

  • Comment removed

  • rofl outro. that was a hilarious end to the song. such a talented guitarist. he is a one off, there wil never be anyone like him again. R.I.P

  • this is my favourite tune !

  • Maybe a silly question. However, I cannot figure it out what kind of sound there is at 0:16? Does it come from the guitar? I suppose so but I'm not 100% percent sure and then, how do you play that sound?

Wonderful song by Shawn Lane! The changes between the guitar and the keyboard is just brilliant!

  • He is just playing some muted strums on the guitar with a little delay

  • I think he's just playing some dead notes on his guitar to the rhythm

  • I don't know why but I think it sounds cool! As I said, I don't why:S

  • i like the live one better thean the studio version

  • I mostly prefer his live performances. But this is one of the rare songs that I prefer listening to the studio version.

Most studio takes lacked long improvisations and in the case of Grey Piano Flying, the lead kept from going to the left and right speaker, giving the impression that they were two guitars, which makes it a lot less impressive!

  • at 32k views i made atleast 10k :)))))))))))))

  • ha ha..

thank you for making 10k views out of 32k.

if youve got friends watching britney spears or jonas brothers, maybe you could also enlighten them with shawn Lane's genius :-)

  • shawn lane was (is?) the best guitarist ever.. his musicality is so expressive. I don't care shit for techniques when I can hear all the music Shawn composed. It's amazing...

  • Hey, does anyone know what gig this is? cheers

  • Musicians Institute, Hollywood, CA, 5th Feb 1993.

  • Thanks very much :)

  • That IS Real Music

  • I love how everyone loves shawn lane, he kicked so much arse.

  • lol at how he randomly goes and kicks the pianist's ass.

  • yeah lol ahaha and goes out after a flashy run

  • Does anybody know what's the name of the Drummer?

Cos I think He's simply AMAZING.

    Thx!

  • Sean Rickman

  • Shawn Lane rules !!!!

  • You my sir are an Idiot!

  • how would you define a guitar god ?

  • Let's see...

He had "blazing amazing phrasing" and used tons of fluid, complex ideas.

    His improvisational skills are unreal.

He was arguably the fastest alternate picker in the world.

He was pretty much self taught at everything.

In his first album he played all instruments himself on keyboard - guitar was the only thing on tape (he'd record that in one take).

Many great guitarists and musicians testify to his skills - Eric Johnson, Paul Gilbert...etc

You need to watch more of his videos.

  • Each to their own, but I believe some of his songs are truly magnificent - try Epilogue For Lisa or Aga Of The Ladies.

Perhaps if he decided to be more mainstream he would be more successful, but it wouldn't really be his *own* music. Shawn never strived for fame or glory.

  • I'm not one to ordinarily say this, but you're opinion is just straight-up wrong lol. Yes I know all that no opinion is wrong, that's what makes yours so special.

  • ok, I'm not going to get into this, but in my opinion his compositional skills were great, I love the modes and key changes he uses in this piece

  • his music beats out metallica and ozzy osbourne any day

  • you really clicked on the shawn lane videos to tell us fusion-fans that our music is horrible and yours is best?....wow thats poor, get a life dude

  • nah you reproached every Lane-fan here for looking for technique only. and "OZZY KICKS ASS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!......METAL LICA SHOVES METAL UP UR ASS!!!!!!!!!! " contains the statement that your music is better, doesn't it? Is it so hard to except that there are people that like complex melodies and rhythm?

    btw.: "Jew" is no insult.

  • what is the name of the drummer?

  • Sean Rickman. Man, was he crazy as hell too.

  • Shawn was not your typical tasteless shredder. He truly mastered his instrument. It's kind of sad that people focus on how fast he could play.

  • I can see why people focus on how fast he can play:P the only person that I have seen who could play faster was Marcus Paus, but he plays just rubbish. but as you say Shawn mastred his instrument and he is sorely missed:(

  • wow...

    Shawn can play keyboard too...

  • yeah, how funny that he's like "ok before we really start let me just show you that I can explode the world with my keyboard skills as well"

haha, then he goes and plays on the guy's bass for a bit and then gives the worlds best drum solo, then actually starts the song.

  • Fucking hero...

  • If my mortal ears could cry they would after seeing this!!!!!!!!!!!! Love that outside guitar sound that many try to copy but will never even come close!!!

  • Why did he have to go?

  • God hated shawn because shawn was better than him hehe, shawn was from another dimension

  • lol

  • guitar god!!! awesome and impressive technique, blows away my mind!!!!!!!

  • guitar god?

why insult shawn with such a petty title, shame on you sir

plus we know god has the only shawn lane poster in existence on his wall

  • i enjoyed this

  • Hm.. death always takes the worlds best. Thanks for all your hard work while you were with us Shawn. RIP bro!

  • I love this shit man. This is what I dream of creating. Great band period; I'm sure they were hand-picked by you know who.
