Alysheba is my all-time favorite. He won almost all of his races by narrow margins, just enough to win. cf1970, I've been searching for the full replay of this race for some time now, so if you find it could you please post it - thanks!
What a finish this was. I remember watching it live, thinking, "Wow, Seeking the Gold put a head in front", and just like that, Alysheba put it into another gear and pulled ahead and away.
Yeah, it was a dreary, rainy day at the BC. I really like Alysheba, he was a wonderful horse. Tom Durkin is my current favourite caller with Trevor Denman a solid second. Chic Anderson and Dave Johnson were my classic favourites, with Marshall Cassidy right up there too. You're very welcome, happy you liked it. God bless.
One of the best things about this clip is the flash photography which makes it so special. Likewise for the 1989 renewal down in Florida.
I must agree with you, too about Tom Durkin but I have to say Denman was poor by comparison in last year's Breeders' Cup; he lacked Durkin's star quality for such a high-profile event.
Lastly, for true commentating great - dial up the 1989 Cheltenham Gold Cup and the BBC's Peter O'Sullevan!
The flash photography that day was very cool, I agree. Durkin is a more animated and enthusiastic caller while Denman is more subtle and proper. Another caller I've really come to enjoy is Pimlico track announcer, Dave Rodman. Read my comments about him in the 1998 Belmont footage I've posted. He has great enthusiasm. Checked out the '89 CGC and was astonished how long and grueling it was. Those horses are warriors for running that long. The announcer was quite good too. Take care.
That 1989 race was voted the greatest race of all time in the UK,and its winner Desert Orchid was one of the most popular horses on these shores. He hated the soft ground and going left-handed so his victory was all the more remarkable. When he passed away in December,he was front-page news on all the national press-much like Barbaro.
The race-caller that day was also regarded as one of the finest sports commentators of all time in the UK.
Alysheba-1984-2009. Rest in Peace.

A very respectable effort by the New England-based Waquoit to make the pace and hang in there for third.
