smoking pot in my 1972 VW beetle with 2 foot long speakers in the back, and my stereo with a reverse play cassette deck.....listening to the whole album driving to see evel knievel jump the snake river canyon,in 1974,from the dakotas...lmao....
Last year I heard a radio d.j. say that when this song came out, A lot of people thought Mick was being snobby by saying it's "Only" rock and roll.....Oh well, enjoy your day.
Jagger used to be paranoid that someone would jump on stage and stab him to death when they played this song." If I could stick a knife in my heart, suicide right on stage"
well iv been listening to them since i was 6 years old playing there music at least once a week i am now 28 so beat that and i seen them on there forty licks tour yeha long live good rocknroll
Ok my science teacher(7th grd) said that the stones'll play @ a nursing home then the 8TH GRADE! science teacher says that since they got keith richards they should play a t the morgue(sp?)
There is no band or group above the Stones. My cousin told me in 1991 I agreed then and more so now. David Miller put his head on the train tracks, said goodbye but he was always my friend. He knew " its only rock and roll" RIP
I'm sorry I'm the right age but I have never got the Rolling Stones. About 10 years I told my husband that the Stones never had a rift my god have I never lived that down everytime they come on the tv or radio my husband says oh this is that group that never had a rift, even my 24 year old daughters favourite all time song is Sympathy for the Devil. I think it goes back to about 1965 my older brother was Stones my middle brother was Dave Clark 5 and I was Cliff.
@colelikeslespauls - The Stones were average musicians - The Who, Zep, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, Dire Straits and multitudes of other bands were stronger musicians than the Stones. The great musicians in the Stones died or left.
I do love this tune. This song was the last great Stones song. The last remotely decent album was Some Girls. Everything since has been for cash.
@RicPhlare So you mean that Beggars Banquet or Let it Bleed is a showcase of 'average' musicianship? Keith played all the guitars on those albums and I've never heard them being referred to as 'average'...
@MemphisBlueAgain - Yes, average musicianship. I've heard them before. Like most Stones albums, mostly forgettable with a couple decent cuts. The Stones have lived off a few good tunes from a large volume of material. I think the band was best musically with Mick Taylor, but the quality of the albums didn't get much better. I would put Sticky Fingers up top but Exile would be if it would have been a single album rather than a double. To each his own I suppose.
Your comment either shows that you've slept through all of the albums or that you are part of the Madonna fanclub. These fellas had one the best rythm section of the sixties, they have Keith Richards (who has come up with as many classic riffs as Keith?) and they are excellent songwriters as well.
And just an advice: this song is NOT representative of what the Stones can muster.
@MemphisBlueAgain - The Stones were ok as 60's and 70's bands go, but nothing special. Keef has managed a few good riffs and Wyman/Watts are competent musicians but the list of better musicians and better bass/drummer combos is fairly long. Some of the earlier bluesier Stones stuff was ok, but not really different or better than what the Yardbirds and other Brit blues bands were doing at the time.
@MemphisBlueAgain - I think this tune is the Stones best, but I like a few others - It's All Over Now, All Down the Line, Under My Thumb, She's Like a Rainbow, Bitch, a couple others. Some of the biggies -Satisfaction, Sympathy for the Devil, Paint It Black, Get Off My Cloud, Start Me Up and anything else after Some Girls have me reaching frantically to turn the source of music off.
@MemphisBlueAgain - I think that most rock bands that continue on and on are hampered by competing against what they were in their youth and at the peak. Great rock music, by its nature, needs to be created by younger people. A lot of older bands can still play well, but its hard for older people to create new and different music for a genre that is founded and based in youth. New rock doesn't affect me as the music of my youth (70's) did because, with aging, my perspective has changed.
@MemphisBlueAgain Not to say I don't enjoy the music of my youth now or even newer rock. I like what I like more than I ever did. It's just that I find myself into a lot of different styles as my tastes widen. I've been into 60's R&B for almost 20 years and actually prefer it to most 60's rock. Growing up I heard a lot of 60's/70's country, which I enjoy more and more. I'm finding 50's R&R and pop more and more interesting. Even early 60's R & R, which is not well regarded by most, has gems.
@MemphisBlueAgain - Many people are quite nostalgic about music. I sometimes am, but not so much any more. If I was that way, I'd still be listening to nothing but late 60's to early 80's rock. As a half-assed musician and full-assed listener, I understand a lot more why certain songs have a lasting and growing appeal to me and why others don't.
this song would be pretty good if the ending was not so damn annoying
