Fabulous singing by both.. and .. where is that inability to overpower an orchestra(.. or a big voiced Tenor?????? It is not in evidence here. Callas was in a big, wonderful voice for this duet and role. I wish I had been there to hear it.
@caleche78 Go straight to hell. She had fabulous high notes, and you just cant handle it, when they were big, beautiful , resonant, ON PITCH and not tight like TEBALDI,
@kgarmaker123 : I was talking about Maria Callas, this is an audio from her. Why do you name Renata Tebaldi ? are you on the defensive? you seems to be bothered because you cannot assume Callas instrument was too imperfect and much more inferior to Tebaldi great instrument therefore also Tebaldi high notes are totally more beautiful , more firm (and not tight but not unsteady like Callas's) and more colorful and bigger than Callas's thin, clear , wobbly and ugly high notes
@caleche78 LOL< I knew you were a Tebaldi fan.. before you said a thing.. You have a mark, all of you.. You try to pass off the "vocal quality " of Ms Renata.. The fact is after 1959 she shrieked like a dog, off pitch.. I know I hear her live in Gioconda, and I was so disappointed .. i ask the Met for my money back. Horrible singer. She cannot even in her prime compare favorably with Callas. in hers. Now KMA
@caleche78 Wow, you are glued to the computer. It seems you are not so sure of the gifts of your idol you don't sleep watching the messages all night. I read several of your idiot commentaries you attended perf at the Met in the '60s and are very funny. I am sure you are perhaps a ridiculous faggot of 30 or 35 pathological liar like most Callas fans , very sad your life
@caleche78 and @kgarmaker123 dear lord! what's the matter with you both? I now feel sad for liking both of Maria Callas and Renata Tebaldi. Don't know where to run. I think I'll listen to Steber or Nilsson, because I can't believe people can fight and say those things only for two amazing singers.
@caleche78 - TOTALMENTE DE ACUERDO CONTIGO, LAS NOTAS ALTAS QUE SOLTABA CALLAS HACIAN DAÑO, PARECIA QUE SALIAN DE UNA TROMPETA DE HOJA DE LATA.... VIVA RENATA TEBALDI !!!
@silvr94LOL, you have to be careful! These fans of Tebaldi come out of the bushes and claim with a straight face that she was NOT flat, she was always on pitch.. when anyone with ears can hear she had problems with the upper register and was frequently flat.. .. so being polite we call that an intonation problem. When in fact most had to do with her forcing that voice, and being tight in her upper register( it was simply a voice without an easy top.).
@kgarmaker123 Oh this does nor work , it is lowered , they sing Bflat instead of the written Bs natural and Callas upper tones sounds wobbly and so unperfect even transposing down half a tone the duet.
@neneorganico I disagree. The transposing of this duet down a half tone is definitely acceptable as is other arias.Di Quella Pira, Che Gelida Manina,Vieni fra queste braccia, Purtani,Corriam in William Tell. How does Callas perfect Italian&diction sound ?How does Callas interpretation & feeling?I'm sure your favorite tenor & soprano have transposed as well unless it's Lauri Volpi, but I doubt it is, because he developed a wobble as he got older. My point is that no one singer is perfect.
@kgarmaker123 Tebaldi did have a beautiful voice, but she did not support her high notes properly.I kind of agree, she did force her top, but she got away with it because of the beauty of her voice.Iprefer Callas over Tebaldi, because of her great heart felt interpretations, phrasing&pathos.I also think that MCwas more exciting live(Aida Messico51 with Del Monaco), I think is the best I ever heard. They both seem to be in their vocal prime & perhaps the high altitude made them seem very competitive
She is so amazing.. Sings Lucia one night and this the next and is totally convincing in both... She has the chops for this opera...... this is very beautiful. from both.
@bonanplu You dumb ass... You think this duet was transposed down a half a tone for Calls? Wow.. what stupidity.. This woman could sing comfortably up to high E natural, and in that tessitura. or higher.. . It was transposed down, for Del Monaco... who had problems when the notes were higher than B flats.. It is traditionally transposed down, a half a step, mainly for tenors. GEt a life!
@kgarmaker123 It's VERYpossible that the duet was transposed down for Del Monaco, I think MDM transposed the duet down when singing live, which is supposedly acceptable.MDM does not transpose the duet on the studio recordings.Pavarotti, although having the good facility in the high notes, also transposed the aria down because of the heavy tessitura.MDM did have a good B- Natural. In Trovatore with Bastianini& Gencer,MDM sings the Pira a half tone down but also hits the D- flat in the terzetto.Enjoy
