Watched this on SNL Live in the l70's. At that time The King Tut Exhibit was in Chicago. Steve killed it then, amazed us with his take, and still does....
If King Tutankhamun could be revived from his mummy, I wonder what he would think of this. He was ~18 yo when he died. Once he recovered from culture shock and was debriefed, he would have to love this. I wonder how many things are incorrect in the song and King Tut would be filling in the inaccuracies, like "I wasn't actually born in Babylonia".
My techer made us watch this in Social Studies Class and we couldnt stop laughing... then she paused it and yelled at us and then starting dancing and singing..Very Scary!! :))
@ravenangelofdarknes1 No, I go to Buffalo High School and we do have a Mrs. Clark but that's the English Teacher. Our History teacher is Mrs. Crockett
I watched this when I was 10 years old with my mom and we were crazy people after he would go to work at 10pm. Mom flipped on SNL @ 10:30pmw/ Steve Martin and she recorded this, and we danced around the house doing the King Tut (mind you she would never do this in front of my dad) but those were the great old days...truly crazy asses, me, my sister, & mom. King Tut came to Chicago Museum that year. The late 70s was a great time for us!
Lol yeah it is funny you should have seen the one of Steve Martin impersonating Michael Jackson people on here were confused whether Michael actually went grey when he wasn't at all! I watched this video once it was Saturday Night Live I believe this was '78 or '79 pretty sure. Funny how the impersonator of King Tut plays the sax!!!! @Thornsberryfamily
did u see that guy in the coffin? i bet it would be painful standing in the coffin all that time i bet you should have second thoughts 'bout playing that in your talent show
The first time i watched this was when i was in 7th grade and we play the curse of tutankamen for our contest concert and may i say we sounded awesome!!!!! :)
@IExposeMormonism Just guessing, but it probably was an inside joke, a cross-reference to a recurring SNL Bass-o-Matic skit by Dan Akroyd. Maybe Steve participated in the BoM skit on that episode????
my s.s teacher showed us this and at first the class didn't get it until he actually started sing and then she told us it was on snl and i was thinking "that explains allot about this video" then when "King Tut" came out of his sarcophogus and started playing the sax everyone was yelling " ahh King Tut is Back from the dea" and tuff lie that and omg i was dieing that day and i am in 6th grade and i actually saw it earlier this week and bet half the class did not even know what snl was BUT I DID
@microlinx Yep. That's Blue Lou. That's probably the SNL Band in the background, but members of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (as "The Toot Uncommons") performed on the single.
Watched this in World History class. Everybody had a poker face on. But when our teacher asked who wanted to see it again, half of the class raised their hands.
This novelty tune from 1978 was EVERY BIT as good as Ray Stevens' "The Streak". Because, on The Billboard Pop Charts, it only made it to # 17 instead of #1 should make America ashamed of itself. Some People!
Watched this in History today it was freaking awesome!!!!! i love my teacher hes the best teacher ever!! he played it over and over again and some kids got up and started dancing and singing along to it lol
@scubasam1ful Right on!! This skit was made about 1977, back when SNL was truly stupendous. The writers they had then were terrific. " ..... Dancing by the Nile ..... Ladies loved his style ....!!" LOL "He could have won a Grammy .... buried in his jammies!!" How'd they ever come up with such creative, funny lines?? And of course the dancing by Steve and the two ladies just makes this awesome. I love golf, and way back when I sank a long putt, I would imitate Steve's moves.
This was one of the very best and funniest of all the thousands of SNL skits. The real show-stopper was when the sax player comes out of the sarcophagus (the vertical coffin)!! Shortly after seeing this skit, every time that I was playing golf and either I or one of my playing partners made a great shot, I would copycat Steve's "palms-up, arms-extended" move. Had to tell the guys what on earth I was doing, but once they understood, they LOLed.
I loved this song, and this is the best presentation ever -- especially the revelation of the sax player. Speaking of whom, is that Lenny Pickett? Or was this before he moved from TOP to SNL?
Went to the local carnival, and one of the floats was playing this song. It got stuck by where we standing for 15 minutes with this song repeating over and over again... stuck in my head for eternity now!
My first year of college my old history teacher (who looked like Steve Martin incidentally) asks "Everyone know who King Tut was?" And I reply "Some guy Steve Martin wrote a song about!" It figures the professor got it and cracked up, but the rest of the students were totally clueless.
was the guy playing the sax the sax player in the blues brothers?
