A time before the internet & DVR's when you had to wait with anticipation to see these shows. Everyone watched the same thing & you could discuss it with each other. It was the highlight of the week for kids. Chores had to be done them watch this show with our siblings.
@tonlo92 - yes I remember back in high school when, on Monday mornings, my best friend & I would discuss the new episode every week! I called her Darcel and she called me Tony.
@lbCharmed1 haha. To me there was something about the anticipation of things, it made them special, be it albums, tv shows or movies. Now everyone can just click a button & it's too easy. I hate to sound old, I love the internet but I really miss the simpler times.
Me too. I was 13 that time and I would joined my older brothers watching it on Mon nights right after finishing my homework. The programme would then be the talk in school the next day esp with the girls discussing about those who performed the previous night. Sweet memories... Greetings from Singapore.
@jilajig2 - that isn't Adrian Zmed. The dark haired male dancer's name is Tony Fields and the red head's name is Alex Cole. Adrian was never a dancer on SOLID GOLD.
THe music has magic.....I rmeember when this first came on, where I lived we only had three local channels, NBC, CBS and PBS. THe NBC affiliate would show HEE HAW at 6 on Sat. nights, THe CBS affiliate started showing Solid Gold. I thought, "Fainally, was getting tired of 'I'm a pickin, I'm a grinnin' "
Wow, at number 19 is "Jesse" by Carly Simon. There's a song I have not heard since back when it was first popular.
Now that I think about it, considering that it was a pretty big hit for Carly, it's kinda strange that nowadays I don't hear on any of the oldies lite/pop radio stations.
I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this show! I couldn't wait for it to come on. I just love all the dancers, costumes, and of course all the great artist! I miss this show sooo much.
Most of the time the singers lip synched but if you were #40 on the year end countdown you sang live because you were the opening number for that show. The Christmas countdown were not lip synched-sung live
my mom told me about this show and she told me to watch it to see if i would like it. well, turns out i like this show. and i am only 14. i am an oldie to be 14. lols. XD
I JUST LOVE THE DANCE NUMBERS AND THE DANCERS! What the hell has happened to good TV with variety? All these reality TV Shows on today are crap! Does anyone know if Soul Train is still on?
@Suspiria10 If you have digital cable(if theis channelis offered), or Directv(not sure about Dish), but there is a channel called Centric TV which showcases classic programs featuring balck actors. They usually have Soul Train marathons
oh yeah the 1980's were not flashy and gaudy. (sarcasm) The first song was an Oscar winner!! SG= I loved this show. Ch 31 WUHF in Rochester used to show this on Saturday afternoons. We didn't have cable, so thank god for this show!! And thanx, Charmed, 4 posting this.
They sure don't make shows (and music) like they used to. I remember this show, along with American BandStand, Fat Albert, School House Rock (Conjunction Junction, what's your function?), etc. all on Saturday mornings. I agree sabersgrrl, where did the time go???
what memories! i was just a little kid, but i remember this episode :) It's kinda scary that we're already in 2010. Back than 2010 a way off distant year. I thought cars would be floating in the air just like in the Jetsons. How quickly time flies, how quickly you realize that your youth is fleeting and you're not naive and innocent anymore
@Jgeneraledger23 That was a heck of a saturday night lineup! Now if you don`t have cable your saturday nights are a dud if you depend on the major networks.
I used to play Solid Gold Dancer in my backyard for hours! LOL Oh BTW THe original FAME is far better then the piece of crap they recorded for the new movie.
Is there a way to get the complete series on DVD? I have a 27 year old stepson with autism and he is a big fan of Solid Gold. Especially, it seems, anything with Dionne Warwick. If anyone has a contact for this, please let me know. Jonathon will be a happy man. Thanks
Unfortunately no, the show has not been released on DVD. As far as I know there are no current plans to release it (apparently) because of the musical licensing fees that the record labels wlould want to be paid.
hahahhaha u really make my night ! i can not believe you !moose nose dionne/? i laughted soo hard hahahahaahah u baddd ...... take care javier from miami
Irene Carra, she is such a cutie. I had the biggest crush on her back then when she was in Roots 2. She had the bushiest eyebrows. Now looking at her prance around on stage, she reminds me of Prince. Maybe it's because she's petite and wearing a frilly costume...?
As always it's great to see these early clips of Solid Gold, especially the first episodes. Does anyone have any information on the other African American dancer, opposite of Darcel? I recall she appeared on the first two or three episodes and was replaced.
This came on channel 11 in New York.

Different format, indeed. Unlike the "WTF?" episode you posted earlier, at least they put the numerical position for each song on the countdown.
Nevertheless, it's still great to see where it all began for SG.
