Will everyone quit bitching about " oh, no, he's the best, no, He is!"? Please. you're all giving me a musical migraine AND scaring off newcomers to the genre who may have been hooked in by Andrew or one of the others. Look, they are all the best at what they do. Sondheim at uniqueness up to and including musicals about cannibalistic mass murderers, R&H at making instant classics that never get old, and AWL at spectacle shows that grab your attention and are terribly catchy. let it go!
Ms Streisand's performance of this song is so disappointing. There are so many more versions that emote far more successfully .....try Debra Byrne, Elaine Paige or Petula Clark. A little humility works wonders here ...
I would like to have heard/seen Jane Olivor perform this number. Most performers have done a more than credible job, and while I love Streisand, I think Glenn Close brings the stage magic to this. Patti LuPone sounds like a screech owl.
I don't know what all you hambones are talking about. All of the composers and lyricists you are talking about are wonderful- there is no such thing as 'best.' Thank Goodness for all of them. Streisand, on the other hand, is another story. She is the best interpreter of theatre, film, and American popular song standards ever. Is anyone listening to her performance on this song instead of arguing?
I like Webber, Sondheim, and Marvin Hamlisch who did Chorous Line ( won a Pulitzer Prize), and many others. No one person is really the BEST in everyone's eyes. It matters as to who you personally like vs making it contest that no one else can touch that person in composing the music and lyrics. There are a lot of great composers, lyricists out there. It is not a contest as to who writes/composes the most, rather what you like in their music and the quality of it, not quantity.
...it does make it more interesting to my ear. I also find his music on the whole much more interesting on a harmonic level. Webber's success has a lot to do with what is a usually quite limited harmonic language- full of easily digestable, clichéd chord progressions. He's also quite famous for stealing from other composers such as Rachmaninoff. While what he comes up with is often lyrical and sweet, it's also a little simplistic and boring. (Especially when compared to Sondheim.)
To compare Webber to Sondheim is ludicrous. That is like comparing a Mercedes to a bentley. The quality of Webber's legend far transcends any other musical composer by light years.
Andrew Lloyd Webber is WAY better than Sondheim! Sondheim's musicals sound the same every time, and his songs eventually get annoying when you listen to them over and over. Andrew has that special quality in his musical where listening to the same songs doesn't bother you, and he has some real master pieces like Aspects of Love, Woman in White, Evita, etc. I have heard many Sondheim musicals, I have even been in a lot of Sondheim musicals. His music is okay.
@cutiealto2 uh if by okay you mean actually Good. Sondheim's music is musically interesting and has amazing counterpoint as well as motivic development. Webber's idea of music development is repeating the melody. A lot. If one of their bodies of work has a sameness to it, it is definitely Webber's. Webber can write a catchy, perhaps more easily singable melody. His music is more accessible to the commoners. Sondheim has the lion's share when it comes to intelligent music.
@ldspianoman that is not neccesarily so. The only time Webber repeats the melody is during stage transitions and orchestral interludes. In musicals like Sondheim's Passion and Bye Bye Birdie, melodies are super repetitive (especially in Passion, but I am a big Passion fan). Also, I must disagree with you when it comes to the vocal demands of Webber versus Sondheim. Webber's music demanding when it comes to voice types and skill. Plus Webber has more of a plethora of musical themes.
@cutiealto2 hm. I haven't seen Passion so I can't comment on that. But Sondheim didn't write Bye Bye Birdie. And I'm sorry for the word choice- when I said "singable" what I should've said is simple. The vocal demands you're talking about in Webber's music have to do with range and sustaining long phrases, etc. But these long phrases are usually a lot more banal than Sondheim's- who often has jagged melodies w/unusual intervallic leaps. While this doesn't necessarily make his music good,
Frankly, I don't understand what the obsession with Barbra is all about. I think Glenn close did a much better job with this. I like some of babs's music, but some people talk about her like she's jesus christ.
Granted, I think she does a beautiful job with "evergreen"

Thanks, MusicStudyman! 'Sunset Blvd' is one of my all-time favorite movies. A true classic. It's difficult to think of anyone other than Gloria Swanson doing it in the original film version, but I've read that Mary Pickford, Mae West & Pola Negri were offered the role before Ms Swanson was considered. Sad that the late great Ms Swanson never again was give a role or character that depth. Thanks again! :)
Andrew Loyd Webber is not the best musical theater composer. He is by far the most successful, but not the best. That award goes to Stephen Sondheim; he's written so many different types of musicals, and he writes all the lyrics...
For sheer escapism and transportation to 'other worlds' in the old style of melody and orchestration then ALW is probably the choice. For intellectual expression, lyrical interplay with slightly more regard to substantial content than theatrics and applause pulling numbers, hummability then SS takes the prize. I think you're comparing fruit cake with chocolate cake - two very different expressions of the same idea and one isn't really better that the other, only in your own mind and soul.
@GoodbyeToBlueberyPie ...and he doesn't promise the fabulous London leading lady bringing in the show's big bucks, PATTI LUPONE, the Broadway gig and fire her behind closed doors. Just sayin.
@GoodbyeToBlueberyPie THANK YOU! I'm so glad someone agrees with me! ALW is NOT the best. There are others that are better than him. Sondheim is phenomenal. Even Rodgers and Hammerstein are better than ALW!
@MandeeSparkle EVEN Rodgers and Hammerstein?!!!!!!!!!!! You are aware that Oscar Hammerstein the Second was Sondheim's idol and mentor in the developing stages of his career? Are you also aware that Richard Rodgers had a long and illustrious career both with and without Oscar (have you ever heard of Lorenz Hart?)? Please don't belittle R&H, they're the kings of the Broadway Musical, and always will be.
@BlackieGirl Yes. I'm aware of everything you just said. Because I'm not an idiot. I was saying that in a tone that most people I know don't respect and know their work, because they're too busy fawning over spectacle shows like ALW's. Please don't belittle ME when you know nothing about me and my knowledge and years of schooling and work in theater, as i assume you also have.
@MandeeSparkle 'Spectacle Shows'? Phantom's crashing chandelier is highly theatrical rather than a 'spectacle'. The Cats set was small but a great concept. Joseph, Whistle & The Beautiful Game were very simply staged. By Jeeves virtually had no set at all, same with the recent revival of Sunset. Starlight is the only true 'spectacle show' I would associate with ALW - maybe the original Sunset with its 'split screen'. But even then, the songs were so big, even the staircase got small...!
@GoodbyeToBlueberyPie I agree that ALW isn't the "best", but nor do I believe Sondheim is. Sure his music is far more complex and is therefore revieved better with the snootier musical theatre goers, but I think an element of "best" has to be how he is recieved by the public, as at the end of the day he is writing music for commercial theatre. "Merrily We Roll Along" ran for 16 performances. That could hardly be interpreted as the "best".
@GoodbyeToBlueberyPie It's always been said that Lloyd Webber would have given anything for Sondheim's respect and critical acclaim while Sondhiem would have loved to have just a fraction of Lloyd Webber's commercial success. You couldn't find two composers more completely different but great in their own right. They're really apples and oranges.
@GoodbyeToBlueberyPie Sondheim can at times be dull and repetitive - he has had as many dud songs as Lloyd Webber. Both have been the best at the job in the last few decades but have very different takes on structure and audience. I'd say that Lloyd Webber takes far more risks and has covered far more styles of music, but that Sondheim has a 'classier' finish to his best tunes.
Webber is good but i wouldnt consider him the best. There are more that are great such as Richard Rogers, Stephen Sondheim, Jerome Kern, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Leonard Bernstein, Jerry Herman.
But dont get me wrong. Andrew Lloyd Webber is a fantastic composer. I just dont think he is the best there has ever been.
Completely agree. I just don't think the audiences would like the curtain coming up 5 hours late each night though!!! She does have a reputation, bless!
ja wil ook nog wel een keer vind die muziek zo mooi ga een cd kopen die had ik nog niet :-). hoe kun je dat checken wanneer pia speelt dat weet ik nooit.
Not only Barbra is perfect for the role in terms of vocal rendering but also as an actress. Barbra Streisand is a fine interpreter with a strong sense of true, wich is something I don't find that often in Glenn Close's rendition of Norma Desmond, somewhat exaggerated to my taste.
Well I don't know if Andrew Lloyd Webber is the best musical theater composer...but Sunset Boulevard is a magnificent score. It's my favorite from him. Critically, others have been better. I think Jule Styne, who's crown jewel was the masterpiece that is Gypsy, and Stephen Sodhiem are perhaps the best.
Glenn Close is perfect for the role. She has the perfect face for it. Her facial features are perfect for someone who was supposed to be a glamorous silent movie actress. Vocally she may not be as good as some others, but the performance is something you can always count on with Glenn Close. I don't think barbara could do as well, regardless of vocals.
I think she and Glenn Close are probably the two names in the running. Remember, when turning a musical into a movie, producers/directors always look for a big name to bring people to the theater. Both Glenn and Barbara do that. I give Glenn the slight edge because she originated the role on Broadway. Also, rumors are flying round that Barbara wants to play Rose in a film adaptation of Gypsy...
I saw also your video, and I mus say you have a beautiful voice. But you need to choose not the songs you like to hear but the suitable songs to your voice.
As fantastic as her voice is, she has the same problem Patti LuPone had in that there's not the level of emotion needed to capture the madness of Norma Desmond, hence why Glenn is Norma, and does the best version of this song.
Barbra does an exquisite interpretation of this piece of music from "Sunset Boulevard." The vocal and the orchestration are exceptional; captures the true emotion of the song... Barbra is simply a genius... my life-long idol! :)
Listen! They are all Bros; Sondheim, Webber, Schwartz, Sheik, RH, Menken, Kander, JRB, all of them! Each and every one of them is a bro.

As fantastic as her voice is, she has the same problem Patti LuPone had in that there's not the level of emotion needed to capture the madness of Norma Desmond, hence why Glenn is Norma, and does the best version of this song.

Elain Page gives Ms. Close a tight contest, imo. Page's extravagant mimicry is unsurpassed.

Barbra does an exquisite interpretation of this piece of music from "Sunset Boulevard." The vocal and the orchestration are exceptional; captures the true emotion of the song... Barbra is simply a genius... my life-long idol! :)
