Of course it was a penalty by geoghegan, i remember crying out in frustration when he flopped down on Andrew, but being plesently amazed when the ref gave ireland the decision!
But frankly Ireland needed all the help the could get at the time and it helped us win so ill live with the mistake!!
And geoghegan deserved every decision he got due to the magnificent effort he put into every performance...LEGEND
Well clearly I do! There is nothing in the rules that says a player must not stop a player getting to his feet. Player goes to ground to contest the ball, Geoghegan gets back on his feet, plays the ball. Textbook stuff and would have survived todays even stricter interpretations.
if the ball is loose...like then, when the were chasing it after it had been kicked, if a player drops on the ball like Andrew did you have to allow the player back to their feet before making any contact with them!
what do you mean "these days" it would be a penalty.....I was at this game at Twickers in 1994...it was a penalty back then as well. It was a big talking point after the game as Ireland won by less than 3 points.
We need him now.

i suppose its fair to say he has a bit of speed

So he has to tackle him, let him get back ip. What does he do then- tackle him again and let him get back up again? And so on.
stalkek 2 years ago
its because he dived on the loose ball he has to be allowed back on his feet then he can be tackled.
george594 2 years ago
You must alow the player back on his feet?! WTF!

Obvious penalty to England. Having said that I was at the game and Ireland deserved to win. England were crap that day.

You don't have to allow the player get to his feet. Nothing in the rules about that.

ooo touchy, but seriously you must allow the player back on his feet.
06kickflip 3 years ago
what are you talking about?
you're saying, after you tackle a player you have to let him up!? If that was the case there would be no rucks.
All Geoghegan was doing is to try to get the ball off Andrew who was in possession of it, in which case you dont have to leave him up.
boru1982 3 years ago
no that's not what he means!

these days that would be a straight out penalty AGAINST ireland for diving on the player on the ground. Amazing how the laws have changed.

"These days"...actually that was the law at the time in 1994 when this game was played. He had to let Andrew get up before tackiling him.
