@duncan7599 They don't do it so you can see pretty shiny things, you can go watch a movie for that, they do it because these "boring rocks" tell a story of how the planet was formed and how it came to be how it is. This is important because it means the more we know the more we can prepare ourselves for building colonies over there, or how the Earth may end up if we got hit by a large object that would strip the planet of it's vegetation and so on and kill most or all life here.

@TurokSwe Kinds, yes. Some life can endure gamma radiation. But the kind of radiation isn't what matters ultimately, it's the dose. And solar radiation is so strong, it can push a spacecraft , and destroy sensors made to measure solar radiation - on the voyager probes. It's unlikely life can survive such doses of radiation.
