  • nice..i am going to convert my e 46 bmw to electric, but i want more range,at least 80-100 miles,i start looking from where to buy parts and batteries, but here in my country ( Romania ) it a little bit hard to register electric cars..i will post a video when the car is ready..wish me luck :D

  • LOL sorry to be the dick Joe, I like your project a lot ...

Seriously though get a fucking real roll bar.

  • you managed to find a way to make the Miata MORE gay.

  • 26 miles is pretty low. but there is a simple solution that i have not seen applied to an electric car yet... why hasn't anyone added an alternator or two to the loop..? gas cars have them so why not electric cars, it makes perfect sense. modify the motor or transmission if you have to.

  • @KeLDTsGuitarist67 yes great ideal idiot,.how is it working for the goverment

  • @atomrocketcar Correction, you mean "Idea" not ideal. and what are you talking about? how is what working for the government?

  • @KeLDTsGuitarist67 What you're talking about is like a perpetual motion idea. Problem is, because of friction and heat, there is always a loss of power. So it would take more energy to turn the alternator than it would produce. Adding an alternator to an electric engine would only drain it faster.

  • The only problem with electric cars is the impact on the environment. Gas cars should be getting well over 100mpg by now but greed and certain types of regulation prevent it.

  • Joe i think ur wife converted you as well

  • Nice job on that nimble Miata, that pjoject just got bundled up with excessive weight .26 miles range ? once a gutsy & one of the most raced car on the track. Keep it up all you need is to add a Turtle/snail emblem on the rear panel...

  • this video iah HATE hippies! 26 miles a pop for $7,000 plush the cost of the car X 10 weeks of labor = hippy liberal douche bag! Be a man - buy a stock miata and advance the timing 18 degrees and run premium gas! goddam hippies turning sports cars into electric cars with a 26 mil range.

And how long will those batterys last before they're garbage to? Starts to add up doesnt it. If hippies could THINK their would realize their ironic attempts to 'save the earth' are indeed IRONIC

  • @djhivesdotcom Stop calling people names and show us what you have created...

  • @djhivesdotcom what crappy junk do you drive? suv?? real fast fat buddy

  • @djhivesdotcom Actually they have electric cars now that get 300 miles to a charge. This guy did a good job. Your the hippy here.not him. He just sees a better potentional for the future

  • K so it only goes 26 miles per charge. Yeah not so great for big road trips people but smart for cities big cities and if your not really going to far out of your area it's a pretty damn good idea, but no matter what we do someday this planet is fucked lol and I'm also saying that you just can't right now beat a fossil fuel car just yet I mean electric cars don't have any sort of voice, there's not really A manual transmission for an electric car so it's not as much fun or takes as much ski

  • I think it only goes 26 miles between charges because of its weight.

    1. it's made of metal and that can get heavy even though it's a tiny ass car.

    2. you didn't replace the seats with lighter ones to reduce weight as well

Overall nice job, but you need to make it lighter in order for it to be comparably efficient to a standard car that runs on gasoline.

  • i would go lithium ion batteries

  • Take the transmission out and hook the motor directly to the driveshaft. Tranny puts huge drag on the system wasting power. If you wanted to get 100 miles per charge, take the transmission and the diff out and use two hub mount motors (in-wheel) and hook them up with a reversing switch for braking to make the rear brakes regenerative, pump some power back into the batteries while driving. To balance the two motors out, use a resistance splitter, and reverse it to put power to the loaded wheel.

  • Nice job! I bet your family loves it. I would love to do this sometime but right now no bucks. Something I wanted to know and maybe I missed it if you said but what kind of mileage do you get? thanks

  • Yes but think of all the Coal you burn making all that electricity....

  • @Gocajoca Do you know what it takes to get gas to "using standards" compared to emmissions of the coal?

  • Hello gr8 job the 26 mile range does this include running headlights?

  • great job my friend. : P awesome.

  • put some dubs on it

  • nice if you post an onboard demo clip

  • Very nice! His the weight still close to 50/50 ratio?

  • hell ya skycraft, i will be starting something like this very soon, just it will be a custom frame and body. i live out in ovideo currently, but used to live on Rollins College. i still frequent skycraft even today

that place is THE BEST for... hell anything....

  • Nice. Everytime I see a Miata it makes me want my little Fiero back. :( :( :(

  • Oh my GOD!!! THIS IS PERFECT!!!! I'm doing a conversion of the EXACT SAME CAR! 1996 Mazda MX5 Miata

Where did you get that adapter plate??

  • 26 miles max? Ouch. That sucks hard.

  • gud job, but 26 mi range would not work for mny ppl. Lithium iron phosphate or lithium polymer batteries are more expensive, but are much lighter, have longer life, and can give the greater range.mny ppl need. New advances in battery tech will be available in next 2 yrs that will provide vry fast charging, as well.

I am currently (no pun intended) doing a conversion of a BMW 3 series to battery electric with lithium iron phosphate... almost done.

TY very much for your video!

  • LiFePo4 are NOT more expensive. They outlast Pba 10x over. Consider a pack of A123, at the same cost, with the same range, but with 3x the power output, 3x lighter, and 10x the life cycle. Why would anyone use Pba? Coz they don't know they can get something better.

  • "roll bar for safety" --that's not a roll bar, it's a style bar. In a crash it will do nothing at all to protect you. It actually has the capability to kill you since it'll just bend/snap in a rollover.

  • NICE JOB DUDE

  • 105 HP seems huge to me. Is that figure correct ? That might be the reason for the relatively short range. Anyway nice conversion.

  • also what is the life expectancy of these batteries after being charged and discharged repeatedly as they are?

  • lead acid is 400 to 800 cycles and also depends how deep u discharge it each time.

  • how much does it weigh?

  • So do you have solar panels on your house supplying this electricity? How much do you think it would cost each time to charge all of these batteries each time based on your own cost per kwhr?

  • Did you just say that it only goes 26 miles between charges?

  • Yes, 26 miles.. see the specs to the right under video information. Thanks for watching.

  • @drdianascience ouch, i wouldn't even get to work and back so will stick to a turbo diesel that gives 55mpg!

  • @drdianascience Did you switch to Lith Ion Batteries yet?

  • @altops I only filmed the project. Please email the individual in the sidebar for that info. thanks for watching.

  • Nice job there!!

Is the electrical engine connected directly on the transmission or is the clutch in between?

  • Prof, please read the specs on the side, it provides all the details of the process and parts. Thanks, Diana

If you don't find the info. pm me and I will send you contact info. for the engineer.

  • Nice job on converting and a good choice of car. I used to have one of those and miss it terribly but I had nothing but rainy weekends whenever I wanted to use it!

  • Thanks and thanks for watching.

  • It's a very cool car, too bad you are such a yuppie lib.

  • Great car, the range could be better but batteries are expensive.

  • That is an incredibly inefficient set up...

  • That isn't a rollbar.

  • I was going to say. That "roll bar" would fold in and probably into the peoples head if it ever flipped.

  • the technical name of it is a style bar. This is exactly what it is, its just to look nice, a roll bar is much skinnier in diameter (thicker piping) and usually goes from back to the front.

There are few roll bars that are only connected to the rear however they have like 6 points to mount and they mount in a dual triangle type of way so they dont "fold" into a persons head.

  • yup, I knew this.

  • Details? , no sh!t it's got an e motor and controller. Which one? Are you posting to show off or forward homebuilts? Share specs because us poor people can't afford to buy the wrong parts.

  • sawracer,

Please read the latest details of the project that were submitted by the individual who did the conversion.

  • This conversion is awesome, and with one of my favorite car models. I would like my car converted too. May I visit and take a look at your ZAP ZIP?

Here in Tampa we have a Johnson Controls battery plant. Maybe they are making NiMH batteries.

  • macrobotics, thanks for watching. The owners of the car are answering the emails, etc... so I'm sure they will reply to your request.

  • just so you know, those are style bars you have and they are not roll bar. If your wife is concern about the car rolling over, you need the real ones.

  • FYI The Miata is the car least likely to roll over according to safety tests in the USA.

With all those batteries its probably even better

  • What is the motor? DC or AC? Can't find it in Skyraft website which was mentioned.

  • looks like a Netgain motor

  • awesome! whats the range and how fast will it go?

  • riegirrl,

The range is 26 miles...The owner of the vehicle will be checking periodically with comments to reply. Thanks for watching. Dr. D

  • is that the max range or the miles typically driven?

  • From what I recallfrom the vid interview. The charge lasts for approx. 26 miles- also I believe they are using it for short trips.

  • ok thanks. if you ever talk with them can you ask them about the max range. im thinking about the same thing but i want to know if my range calculations are feasible.

  • Typically driven less than 15.

  • Hi!

The range is 26 miles at ZERO remaining in the battery. It will go up to 65 miles per hour- that's why we call it ZAP ZIP.

  • so 26 is max range huh. (i guess ill have to rethink it then) thanks

  • Warp-9 or 11 dc motor? Good Job!

  • Thanks for watching AlamoCityCello.

I'm an acquaintance of the individual who took on this project. Will forward your ? on.

  • Warp 9 (impulse)

  • I'd suggest removing that style bar...it's just added weight to strain your batteries on acceleration. :p

  • Does it run?

  • Every day!

  • For the whole week I thought it was a dud.

  • Thanks for watching Pete.

  • Awsome..I want one...lol...

  • We have 2 gas powered miata. They go 600 kms between fillups
