The only major flaw the FE engine is that the heads cant move the air, unless they have been ported and polished to the gills. Shelby also strokes the engine to 468 ci, then its officially a beast, with the stage III's making over 900 hp
Ford FE style engines are pigs. crappy cylinder head design, goofy firing order, lousy exhaust port design. only way they ever offered any performance was to try and stuff one in the smallest, lightest vehicle you could find.
@midatlanticcycle pigs???...so all F.E style engines are pigs huh ...does that include the 427 [s.o.h.c.] that made 660hp???..i dont recall [any] bb GM motor offering hp like that over the counter.....remember...fear begins with F.E. ....i have over abused , over heated , alot of F.E motors ,,,and they are extremely reliable
@390merc65 the FE motors from 331, 352, 390, 406,427,428 were in fact pigs. i'm 57 years old today and remember when these motors were newly installed in factory cars. they ran like crap and only became "feared" or "racy" when yanked out of the boats they left the factory in, and jammed into fairlanes, falcons, cobras....anything that would hold them. and since when did a non-production, over-the-counter one year only (1963) offering cause fear in the hearts of any racers or tractor-pullers?
@midatlanticcycle seeing that you are older then me..you forgot a few F E motors like the 361 edsel ,360 truck motor ,the 332 that also came out in 58 with the 352
and the 2 year [ 1966/67 mercury 410] .seeing you are older then me give's you the advantage ,most of these motors were out before i was born ,or i was just a little kid when some of them came out.[sohc] was more then a 1year offer ,but i have a few trophy's my dad won back in the day running a 58 ford 352 and outran alot of 348's
@midatlanticcycle the FE style won lemans three years in a row, guess the rest of the motor world at that time must of had skinnier pigs, crappier cylinder heads, goofier firing order, and the worst exhaust port design in the motor kingdom.
"428" is the engine size. Unless you are French, nobody cares about "litres". It would be around 7 litres if you are.
It seems very similar to Ford's famous 427, but the 428 had a smaller bore (4.13") and a longer stroke (3.98") to promote torque for street machines.
Shelby put lots of 428's in "427" cobras due to cost, but in a super light cobra roadster, more torque is not exactly a good thing. In a Mustang, though, more torque is just the cure for what ails ya.
except NASCAR didn't allow dual 4-barrels. "Leaning out" was more of a problem with Chevy's Rochester carbs on a 2X4 Corvette. Rochester=oink The carbs are backward (as if it mattered, some applications mount them sideways to allow for double pumpers bigger bowls) simply to clear the distributor, as are the common 3X2 manifolds for the 406, 390 and some early 427's.

@midatlanticcycle Quite agree - the best engine ever in my opinion is the Toyota Prius unit.

The carbs are backwards because Ford had problems with them leanning out in Nascar Racing. This configuration solved the problem.

Carbs are backwards to clear the distributor. Ford 2 X 2 barrels are the same.

I was wondering the same thing. Why are the carbs inversed???
