Thanks. Some tournaments require a certain number of balls to pass the head string, but this is not in the official WPA rules of pool (although at least 4 balls must be driven to a rail).
The only 8-ball pattern I'm familiar with is using the second-ball break to get 8-ball motion. The 15-ball rack is much less predictable. In 10-ball, one pattern is to use the right CB direction and speed to pocket one of the 2nd-row balls in the side pocket. Try it out.
