Laughed out loud... Anything over 1/2 a mil is just a waste of your life. love it. Hey... I’ve been playing about 16 years. I want to develop more speed & accuracy. I can play quarter notes at 120 bpm any time of the day. Anything above that and I start to have a lot of trouble with my 6th string. I’ve been trying to work with my metronome more and dedicate more time to just exercises, including just picking the 6th string. Any thoughts or tips ?
@Fearcandy64 Practice as fast as you can play perfectly. If your nervous system gets accustomed to perfect repetitions you ll progress much faster than you expect. But if you force it with....halpf sloppiness lol...then you ll strugle.
i think i heard Michael Angelo Batio talk about this, and he said to NOT move the fingers, just the wrist and elbow, or a combination, just not the fingers, because you would be limited to just those movements of those fingers. but, i dont know. kind of confused right now...
@omgutt222 Whatever you choose mate the main point is to keep your hand relaxed. For example MAB jams his non pickining fingers on the scratchplate to give his a steady point of reference but that-in most cases-creates more tension.A strategy that works for the majority is movement from the wrist, floating hand, and pick meets the strings at a 45 degree angle(ala paul gilbert). That works for most and provides tensionless(underline that) relaxed and fast playing.Go from there and see...
This is a really great lesson cuz it says more than just 'practice this scale slow and then use a metronome. ' Yea sure that does help, but it's the mindset, especially relaxing and such. Thanks buddy
I know I have bad picking form, I used to just flex my bicep and tricep in order to vibrate my forearm, I could pick quite fast, but I couldn't move off one string, now I'm getting better at not doing that so much at all, but I am just having trouble getting serious speed otherwise.
Hey man, I found this tutorial to be very helpful. But I have a question. Okay, I play a handful of styles of music so far and one of them is heavy metal. (Suprize, huh?)
Now for those fast, tight and gnarly heavy metal riffs with heavy palm muting. I never know to hold the pick tighter for those or lightly. Would it be best to hold it lightly for heavy metal riffs with the heavy palm muting? Thanks!
I think that everything you said is what i use. I must add that it is vital to focus also on your mind to be able to play relaxed. I think 99% players (non-malmsteen) don't even acknowledge their stress level. My advice is that if you cant play (dead) slowly and relaxed like Rob, dont even try to do it fast. Start very slowly. It will feel very uncomfortable in the beginning - as you practice, it will become second nature.
*** i have a problem, though. even when i try to remain still, playing just one string, down, up, down, up... , i can't keep my guitar from shaking... i try to relax, i try make my movements a bit "looser" and less tense, but i can't help it...
playing electric guitar, it's hard to know which examples to follow and which guitarists to take as models... but you have quite a great lesson there, and that i can tell! in a way, you use some of the methods that are also taught to classical guitar students... like that economy of movement - and that is great. congratulations for the lesson!
Pretty late here, but you shouldn't always go straight to the center of the court. Say if you hit cross court, you're going to want to return to either the center of the side in which you hit from, or more towards outside of the court depending on the angle of how you hit it. Completely off topic..
When I'm using a metronome I found I usually hit I point where I'll just repeat the exercise "Trying to decide whether or not im too tense" . Or sometimes I'll play something that sounds ok but doesn't really feel good.
Is there anything I can do to absolutely make sure I don't play too fast.?
To play extremely fast DO NOT move your finger thumb! I assumed when you brought this up that you were going to address this. None of the really technical fast guys move the finger/thumb at all. Michael Angeko Batio even makes a point to explain this and Rusty Cooley backs him up.
what about mute picking? lets say ... metallica master of puppets ? when i play it i try to pick it only from up to down move.. (as i know James plays is that way) i hope i explained well... but i cant reach the middle of the song coz i am getting really tired... is it the cause of incorrect picking or its not? i know its hard question to ask when u cant see me how i pick but still...
@Heroeslll If you're talking about the riffs in the beginning of the song up until the interlude, James downpicks most of it, and I've found you get a much tighter and percussive sound downpicking everything, and that fatigue you feel just goes away with practice.
Hello Rob ! [ Love your Vid's dude] However ? I must differ w/ the points you make here. You are not PICKING THE STING ? Your LoggerHead Pick is slanted slightly and you are actually "Stroking The Notes". Being "Soft" is also being lazy in the wrist. Take Lynch, he attacks the stings, just as SRV The "BENDING" of a pick assures you ARE picking the note & NOT stroking it. I use a Thin Jazz pick and don't have a great problem w/ speed. Your style in holding "The Pick" itself
man you helped me so much , i have watched other lessons on how to hold guitar pick while shredding and they are lame. before i was holding pick hard ,not soft as you said, but i have problem if i hold it soft my fongers are going closer to the end of pick untill they touch strings,if you know what i mean . anyway thanks and sorry for my bad english i don t know if anyone will understand my comment.cheers!!!!
when i pick fast my middle, ring and pinky fingers and straight instead of curled in like rob's and a lot of otehr peoples i see. Is this a bad habbit or hinderance in anyway or will it be fine for me to continue this style?
Does the gauge of strings you use help to facilitate faster picking? I vaguely remember somebody telling me that using a .009 set or lighter is best for playing shred guitar. Anything thicker tends to slow you down. True or not?
everyone picks differently guys and no technique is wrong, i play alot of steve vai, and symphony x stuff, best advice i can give is to just relax dont over do it to early and build up to speed gradually. I personally rest my palm across the strings to mute the strings that arent in use and i economically switch between subtle wrist and finger movements
This year I have played guitar for 20 but I have always been in doubt about this even though I tried intensely figuring it out by looking at other players. – What you say about tennis is really, really clever words. It’s the same as I do when it comes to golf. You shall not hit the ball like you’re cutting a tree with an axe. It’s just a little white ball.... but it is also reeeally a good idea to know about technique.
Hey Rob, great vid. Thanks a lot, I always thought that it´s "wrong" to use anything but the wrist when it comes to right hand picking. Thanks to the video I found out that supporting the wrist movement with movement from the fingers actually helped me to play more accurate, especially with string skipping which is much harder to do for me than shredding on one string. If you´d make a video for the right hand and changing strings it would be sweeeeet. Greets!
if I can add one little thing to help people out with trem picking is isolate what you are doing do not overload your brain with left hand technuiqe at the same time!!! VERY IMPORTANT!!!! use either the high e, b, or g string and take your left hand and just mute them so all you are producing is a muted picking sound, use the tech. Rob explains with that and youll seriously be as fast as all these shred gods.
Your tip about holding the pick lightly, actually so lightly it moves a bit when you strike the string, is a great tip - it really helped. I've been death gripping the pick for years and never realised! Thanks
I used to love thick picks (For a year I used the Yngwie Malmsteen signature pick). Now I'm starting to convert into a lower gauge like Fender Mediums. I think with a thinner pick helps a lot because you don't need to move the pick as far as a thick pick. So you can reduce your distance even further. But it's all about how everything feels, if it feels good, stick with it.
@XAlphaZEROX Have you ever tried a Dunlop Jazz III? They are a little thicker than mediums but they are stiff and have a very precise tip. Once you get used to them they are very fast. If you dont believe me, just ask John Petrucci. :)
@buckster7777 Yeah, I've tried the Jazz IIIs. I loved the speed I could get with such a sharp point and such little pick. I decided against them because they would wear out super fast for me and became so sharp that it would be impossible to get a clean pick. I use Ultex Standards by Jim Dunlop. They're like Tortex in terms of feel and tone but play like a thicker pick.
Dude, Rob, We fucking think the same way. I just coud not explain what I was doing. First I just use the finger and thumb, then the wrist, then both. Now I use each individually depending on what I'm playing. I did not think about this when I made a bad quality video. Great job man. Awesome advice. The martial art Jeet Kune Do, abides by that same theory: Economy of Motion.
Hey rob, thanks for the lesson. i had a question though. Does your wrist touch any part of the guitar? or does it float over? I've really been having some upperarm tension problems (mainly that locking up feeling)
Hey Rob, Thank you for replying. So you just mute with the right hand as long as the pivot point isnt touching i already greatly improved my picking the past holiday by the way :)
@RobChappers thank you so much !!! ive been months trying to improve my speed , not realising i am holding the pick too hard i am slowing myself and making to much noise , thanks to you my playing is alot smoother now , from the first time i tried this method ive noticed a huge difference to my speed , thanks alot :P
damn! first it was kinda boring...like,oh yeah i already know that...but i was surprised at 3:55 ,that kind of picking, i saw that from John Petrucci!
Nice vid. Never thought about just finger and thumb movement. I tried it and feels really clumsy. But when you play fast I dont see your finger/thumb movement but your wrist movement. ..... So are you holding pick lightly even when playing your fastest stuff. i mean doesn´t it slip away or something. Anyway I try to lose my pick grip when practising, worth of try. thanx man!!
Put more effort to the things you are at weak! Shawn lane said that if you want to bet fast play fast as you can, This way you get very fast in no time BUT you need to remeber you are sacrefaising your accuracy if you do that.
Michael Angelo Batio said that " DO NOT FLICK YOUR THUMB" I did what he said and now i am able play insanely fast.. Let me tell how i got fast , I am right handed and i noticed that it was my fret hand what was much slower and etc... But after couple days of training i was managed to become a south paw ( Forced my fingers closer to fretboard everyday, Yes it hurts (( BTW NEVER PLAY TROUGH PAIN OR YOU MAY FACE A SERIOUS INJURY)) but it was worth it) My point was that if you want to get fast conco
Hello, Mr. Chappers. I always enjoy your videos, but comments like this are not quite what i expected to read from you. Don't you think a guitarist of your level should be a bit more "above the things" on being critized ?
I don't get just how you manage to keep your pick b'tween your fingers holding it so softly? When I try that, the pick just climbes up my index finger until there's nothing left to pick with lol
ive been watching your videos and actually learning a lot!!! thanks for that.. what is really giving me trouble is learning to move my finger and thumb.. for some reason i cant do it.. i instinctively start moving my wrist =( what can i do to fix this and maybe some day be as fast as you master?
I just want to thank you for this video. It actually took me out of the many years lasting struggle with picking. You have no idea what it means to me. I had to start over again.. after so many years of playing the guitar. But all that matters is that I finally do some progress.
I laugh when I hear 15 year olds say "I've been playing for 2 years and i pwnz you, i beyond epic pwnz you lol" and this guy been doing this for alot longer time.
@blueberry581044 let me guess a slayer fan...love slayer but a monkey playing with a boner can play better than KK,this guys a pro so lets see a video of your best playin
Don't agree at all with what you saying. If you are playing something at a slower tempo why would you pick a string within half a mm? I think of picking in time should be the same as how a pendulum works, the faster the pendulum the less movement (faster picking) and slower the wider movement (slower picking). Also, picking really short can compromise you dynamics. Thats why people have a bedroom tone becuase they don't pick hard enough
@HitaroX Sorry mate, picking at a slow speed and accurately is when you develop speed. So picking slow is relevant!!! Stop being a smart arse. END OF DISSCUSSION!
@bequickx right now if you cant even alternate pick fast you should not be worrying about dynamics. The reason you are using as little movement as possible while playing slow is you are training your brain to tell your wrist what to do at higher speeds. if you try to play really fast after training your brain to have huge picking movements that is what you will do and you will be tense all the time and sloppy and never achieve the human limit on speed picking.
@wreckage06 grips arent just about keeping it in your finger tips. it helps with positioning. ive used both for a while and the dava jazz grips are better imo. but actually the best picks are the red bear lil jazzers if you have 25 bucks to spend on 1 pick. they never wear so you could use the same one for about a year.
Dunlop Ultex 1.14mms are thin enough to be more economical in movement, but have no flex and are durable to the point that there is virtually no wear after months of use. I use nothing else.
@wreckage06 MY Friend you're so right !!! lol I use Dunlop Jazz III too :: awesome picks ! but big picks are awesome too !! If you play like jason becker (right hand technique and "shape" you prefer the bigger picks !
@wreckage06 V-Picks are better....the tonal improvement is unbelievable. If you try a V-Pick you will NEVER play with anything else.Try the V-Pick Dimension or Dimension Jr. They are amazing!
@xlr8r2010 The Dimension Jr. V-Pick is comparable to the Jazz III XL in size. The thing that is most noticeable to me about the V-Pick is the clarity and volume you get.I only own 2 guitar picks right now....The Dimension & the Dimension Jr.
@xlr8r2010 I went from the V-Pick "Screamer" to Dunlop Ultex Sharp 2.0mm. The problem I had with V-Picks is the same that Chappers described in a recent posting of his and that is the problem of the dissonant "ghost notes" that V-Picks produce. A lot of picks produce these ghost notes, but V-Picks produces them very clearly and with more volume. B The Ultex Sharps 2.0mm's are what I have found to be the next best thing, for me, to V-Picks, but without the "ghost notes".
@Guitarded270 Don't do it,it is a bad habit to get into...if Michael Angelo Batio says "Don't Do It" You probably shouldn't.....he would know right ;)
Thanks for the lesson, it was a breakthrough for me! Sweet.

@XAlphaZEROX Have you ever tried a Dunlop Jazz III? They are a little thicker than mediums but they are stiff and have a very precise tip. Once you get used to them they are very fast. If you dont believe me, just ask John Petrucci. :)
buckster7777 1 year ago
@buckster7777 Yeah, I've tried the Jazz IIIs. I loved the speed I could get with such a sharp point and such little pick. I decided against them because they would wear out super fast for me and became so sharp that it would be impossible to get a clean pick. I use Ultex Standards by Jim Dunlop. They're like Tortex in terms of feel and tone but play like a thicker pick.
XAlphaZEROX 1 year ago
Dude, Rob, We fucking think the same way. I just coud not explain what I was doing. First I just use the finger and thumb, then the wrist, then both. Now I use each individually depending on what I'm playing. I did not think about this when I made a bad quality video. Great job man. Awesome advice. The martial art Jeet Kune Do, abides by that same theory: Economy of Motion.

2mm picks? Wouldnt that be a bit too thick and offer lots of resistance? What do other shredders like yngwie, petrucci, etc. use?
Right now I use a 0.9mm pick, but I'm not sure if I should change or not...
TheSchoolsShallBurn 1 year ago
@TheSchoolsShallBurn - Yngwie uses a 1.2mm Dunlop

@lobyte try to keep your wrist in the same spot, and just use your fingers to do the up and down picking

@frosty383 - what is that, a PRS?
luvmycorso 1 year ago
Hey rob, thanks for the lesson. i had a question though. Does your wrist touch any part of the guitar? or does it float over? I've really been having some upperarm tension problems (mainly that locking up feeling)
lobyte 1 year ago 13
@lobyte Hi mate, my wrist floats but my palm and fingers touch all the strings that I don't play all of the time ;-)

@RobChappers
Hey Rob, Thank you for replying. So you just mute with the right hand as long as the pivot point isnt touching i already greatly improved my picking the past holiday by the way :)
Keep on making the great vids!

Shawn lane said that if you want to bet fast play fast as you can, This way you get very fast in no time BUT you need to remeber you are sacrefaising your accuracy if you do that.
jani14jani 1 year ago
Michael Angelo Batio said that " DO NOT FLICK YOUR THUMB" I did what he said and now i am able play insanely fast.. Let me tell how i got fast , I am right handed and i noticed that it was my fret hand what was much slower and etc... But after couple days of training i was managed to become a south paw ( Forced my fingers closer to fretboard everyday, Yes it hurts (( BTW NEVER PLAY TROUGH PAIN OR YOU MAY FACE A SERIOUS INJURY)) but it was worth it) My point was that if you want to get fast conco

@RobChappers
Hello, Mr. Chappers. I always enjoy your videos, but comments like this are not quite what i expected to read from you. Don't you think a guitarist of your level should be a bit more "above the things" on being critized ?

I don't get just how you manage to keep your pick b'tween your fingers holding it so softly? When I try that, the pick just climbes up my index finger until there's nothing left to pick with lol

ive been watching your videos and actually learning a lot!!! thanks for that.. what is really giving me trouble is learning to move my finger and thumb.. for some reason i cant do it.. i instinctively start moving my wrist =( what can i do to fix this and maybe some day be as fast as you master?
xzero001 1 year ago
I just want to thank you for this video. It actually took me out of the many years lasting struggle with picking. You have no idea what it means to me. I had to start over again.. after so many years of playing the guitar. But all that matters is that I finally do some progress.

guitarbog86 1 year ago
Don't agree at all with what you saying. If you are playing something at a slower tempo why would you pick a string within half a mm? I think of picking in time should be the same as how a pendulum works, the faster the pendulum the less movement (faster picking) and slower the wider movement (slower picking). Also, picking really short can compromise you dynamics. Thats why people have a bedroom tone becuase they don't pick hard enough
bequickx 1 year ago 3
@bequickx Title: Speed Picking, slow picking is irrelevent.
HitaroX 1 year ago
@HitaroX Sorry mate, picking at a slow speed and accurately is when you develop speed. So picking slow is relevant!!! Stop being a smart arse. END OF DISSCUSSION!
bequickx 1 year ago
@bequickx right now if you cant even alternate pick fast you should not be worrying about dynamics. The reason you are using as little movement as possible while playing slow is you are training your brain to tell your wrist what to do at higher speeds. if you try to play really fast after training your brain to have huge picking movements that is what you will do and you will be tense all the time and sloppy and never achieve the human limit on speed picking.

@jatan616 Naa, Disagree

@RobChappers Bit excessive there. Are you always like that?
JacobP2008 1 year ago
@JacobP2008 Didn't you see his reply to the other comment? People are giving him shit, and we're rockers here, we aren't all sunshine and rainbows.
HitaroX 1 year ago
@HitaroX Other comment? Not at all- but it's YouTube. What do you expect?
Nonetheless, leaving your wrist stationary is bad technique. It causes strings to ring, and you can't get the lower strings.
JacobP2008 1 year ago
@wreckage06 grips arent just about keeping it in your finger tips. it helps with positioning. ive used both for a while and the dava jazz grips are better imo. but actually the best picks are the red bear lil jazzers if you have 25 bucks to spend on 1 pick. they never wear so you could use the same one for about a year.
ShredFever92 1 year ago
@wreckage06 no the new dava jazz grip nylons ( the yellow ones). same size and shape and thickness as jazz 3 but with a grip. i HIGHLY reccomend them

Dunlop Ultex 1.14mms are thin enough to be more economical in movement, but have no flex and are durable to the point that there is virtually no wear after months of use. I use nothing else.
richmonksgtr 1 year ago
@wreckage06 MY Friend you're so right !!! lol I use Dunlop Jazz III too :: awesome picks ! but big picks are awesome too !! If you play like jason becker (right hand technique and "shape" you prefer the bigger picks !
BUT JAZZ III ARE AWESOMMMME !

massif20022000 1 year ago
@xlr8r2010 The Dimension Jr. V-Pick is comparable to the Jazz III XL in size. The thing that is most noticeable to me about the V-Pick is the clarity and volume you get.I only own 2 guitar picks right now....The Dimension & the Dimension Jr.
xlr8r2010 1 year ago
@xlr8r2010 I went from the V-Pick "Screamer" to Dunlop Ultex Sharp 2.0mm. The problem I had with V-Picks is the same that Chappers described in a recent posting of his and that is the problem of the dissonant "ghost notes" that V-Picks produce. A lot of picks produce these ghost notes, but V-Picks produces them very clearly and with more volume. B The Ultex Sharps 2.0mm's are what I have found to be the next best thing, for me, to V-Picks, but without the "ghost notes".
