A well built 351 would and has run if not beaten a hci ls1 the ls1 is an aluminum block 2.00 valve from the factory. Thats how stupid some people are to realize Ford does it with so much less. I have an 89 5.0, and I have NEVER been beaten by a chevy. I even raced a 454 that got beat by me. The only thing that has beaten me was another mustang and a 69 charger. Mustangs, if done correctly, can destroy a camaro any day in the quarter mile. Which for most people, the 1/4 is what counts. GM has good top speed, but ford has it where it counts. Mine is an LX 5.0 with a 5-speed tranny and a cobra intake. That's it.
@TheSklyde I call bs on that one. Ive got an 06 GT and I know for a fact that an s197 is faster than a lx5.0 with just an intake manifold. With that being said...Ive been spanked pretty badly by camaros before and I'm not afraid to admit it. Just last night I raced a 2000 Trans Am that had 4.10's, Intake, TB, cam, and a tune and it beat me by about 5 cars in the quarter.
@bbrewer5 i guess i just havent been put up against some one whose actually spent good money on their engine. besides, an 06 GT is just 4.6. so, even though there isnt much of a difference, the 5.0 still has a higher output than 4.6 motors.
@TheSklyde No it doesn't. The 1987-92 5.0's in the mustangs had 225hp and 300ft lb of torque. The 4.6L in the 05-09 mustangs have 300hp and 320ft lbs of torque. Just because it is a bigger engine doesn't mean anything. The 5.0 stangs in the late 80's run low 15's in the quarter, but the newer mustangs (1999-2010) run anywhere from 13.4 to 13.9 depending on the year.

I've got a 95 with quite a few goodies, and while it's fast as hell, I couldn't say what you just said without being wrong. I've gotta intake, cam, CAI, 3.73s 306 ci, pulleys and a few other minor things.

So a 351 with a head and cam swap with probably all bolt ons and juice cant beat a ls1 with bolt ons. sounds like a bunch of bs to me. A 302 with AFR heads intake and a cam with bolt ons will do the job just fine. Especially if he had an auto with a high stall.

5.0 or 351 Mustang is the way to go, cheaper to build, LS1 will get expensive to build, & you pay more that a stock 5.0 to start with.
With the money you invested on a LS1 bodie, you could of gone with a 90's 5.0 & used that left over money for engine parts. Easy drag race project car.
Actually they had 225hp, but thats all they needed back in the 80's and early 90's to be king of the streets. They have old technology in them now, but there light cars and it dont take a whole lot of power to get them up the road... They have plenty of potential.
@JayGeePee1 The late model 5.0s are actually heave as hell, what makes these things fast is not the peak horsepower (which so many people care about), but their good low and mid rpm torque. FInd ANY CAR with 225 peak hp, same weight, same gearing as a 5.0 and "MAGICALLY" the 5.0 wins every time.
@smrtbeenr - You must be thinking of the newer Mustangs. The (1987-93)Foxbody Lx Coupes barely weighed 3,000lbs. The same generation Camaros were something like 3500lbs. The Heaviest (1987-93)Foxbody you could buy was a 3500lbs convertible with the GT package and automatic. The Sn95 Mustangs ranged from 3200lbs to 3600+lbs. The sn197 Mustang which is the most current, tips the scales anywhere from 3300lbs on up to 3700+lbs.

I have an 89 5.0, and I have NEVER been beaten by a chevy. I even raced a 454 that got beat by me. The only thing that has beaten me was another mustang and a 69 charger. Mustangs, if done correctly, can destroy a camaro any day in the quarter mile. Which for most people, the 1/4 is what counts. GM has good top speed, but ford has it where it counts. Mine is an LX 5.0 with a 5-speed tranny and a cobra intake. That's it.

@TheSklyde I call bs on that one. Ive got an 06 GT and I know for a fact that an s197 is faster than a lx5.0 with just an intake manifold. With that being said...Ive been spanked pretty badly by camaros before and I'm not afraid to admit it. Just last night I raced a 2000 Trans Am that had 4.10's, Intake, TB, cam, and a tune and it beat me by about 5 cars in the quarter.

@bbrewer5 i guess i just havent been put up against some one whose actually spent good money on their engine. besides, an 06 GT is just 4.6. so, even though there isnt much of a difference, the 5.0 still has a higher output than 4.6 motors.

@TheSklyde No it doesn't. The 1987-92 5.0's in the mustangs had 225hp and 300ft lb of torque. The 4.6L in the 05-09 mustangs have 300hp and 320ft lbs of torque. Just because it is a bigger engine doesn't mean anything. The 5.0 stangs in the late 80's run low 15's in the quarter, but the newer mustangs (1999-2010) run anywhere from 13.4 to 13.9 depending on the year.

Ive seen it done at the track a lot. and im a Chevy owner myself.
The second thing, it no specs are issued for the mustang, heads, cam etc, SO MANY MUSTANG OWNERS MAKE SHITTY COMBINATION'S, THAT MAKE NO POWER.
You don't need to port performance heads, or go with VERY BIG cams, and then you get an intake without port matching it to the heads.

So a 351 with a head and cam swap with probably all bolt ons and juice cant beat a ls1 with bolt ons. sounds like a bunch of bs to me. A 302 with AFR heads intake and a cam with bolt ons will do the job just fine. Especially if he had an auto with a high stall.

5.0 or 351 Mustang is the way to go, cheaper to build, LS1 will get expensive to build, & you pay more that a stock 5.0 to start with.
With the money you invested on a LS1 bodie, you could of gone with a 90's 5.0 & used that left over money for engine parts. Easy drag race project car.

Actually they had 225hp, but thats all they needed back in the 80's and early 90's to be king of the streets. They have old technology in them now, but there light cars and it dont take a whole lot of power to get them up the road... They have plenty of potential.

@smrtbeenr - You must be thinking of the newer Mustangs. The (1987-93)Foxbody Lx Coupes barely weighed 3,000lbs. The same generation Camaros were something like 3500lbs. The Heaviest (1987-93)Foxbody you could buy was a 3500lbs convertible with the GT package and automatic. The Sn95 Mustangs ranged from 3200lbs to 3600+lbs. The sn197 Mustang which is the most current, tips the scales anywhere from 3300lbs on up to 3700+lbs.

Yeah kenne bell and shelby set records making miracles with your flawless modualar engines LOL! To set it straight a N/A modualar does not make decent power unless it has a super charger. Fords heads have more camshafts and double the valves! So wheres that natural horse power at?!LSX Engines is where its at! Superior flowing heads with a very efficiant port that pack lots of velocity, and push more hp and tq with out forced induction!

Pfft ford sucks on fat dick all day long! please we dont need forced induction to win. a 346 with heads cam will push atleast 450 hp to the rear wheels. a 351 is a great engine dont get me wrong but lsx engines is not something to be taken lightly either cause z28's and trans am's stomp on 197's left and right when the only true mustang is the 03-04 cobra.
