This video was AWESOME!!! Anybody who loves horses & ponies, own or rides, can be my friend! Or collects horses, especially Breyers! That's why my user name is spellisawsome, I used to ride a flea-bitten pony, Spell. He was AWESOME!
i agree with MandyPandyDandy, thats a big leap not only will the strides be hard to get used to but controlling such a large horse will also be be a big change, if your riding a 13.2 you may be too small for 17hh
i ride bigger horses all the time, so im actually used to the strides. and im 5`2 i never really thought about being too small for a horse what do you think?
Your shorter than me i ride a 14hh but don't think i could go bigger than 15.2h lol
whatever feels best for you at the end of the day, you know better than anyone, sorry i was just making a comment hope it didnt offend you in any way :)
BTW i know someone who is your height and rides and 18hh hunter type - just goes to show it depends on the rider
thanks for the advice you didnt offend me! ya im trying out the horse before i buy it for like 2 weeks or something so if it doesnt feel right to me ill go smaller. thanks again!
thats a big leap from 13'2hh to somthing 17hh dont you think you would be better with somthing around 15-16hh belive its really hard getting used to the bigger stirdes
haha - you r funny!! beating eachother's comments... I am NOT bragging, just stating facts - I jumped, when i was 11 3 ft on my 12.2hh pony - she was an awesome pony!! I love jumping, have jumped 3'6 on my 14.1hh
I ride western And I jump A bit But My teacher doesn't teach us how to jump right But I'm going to ride today and I think I am going to try a new height so If I remember I will video it
To add on to the 'Thin' horse being the only good jumper thing, my pony is cob (appaloosa+welch mtn pony). He's small, but certainly not thin. My pony is approx. 13.2 hh and he can jump almost up to 3'3." So, your horse does NOT need to be thin to be a good jumper. A good jumper, for anyone who's looking for one, is usually on with long legs and a long body, such as a tb, an arabian, or a quarter horse.
Selle Francais/Hanovarians/Oldenburgs/and some less frail thoroughbreds are considered the best. Arabs are beautiful, yet are frail, and less muscled.
sorry, I've owned all of the above, and I event. What I've found was that my Oldenburg was my most fantastic dressage horse, my thoroughbred my but stadium jumper, and my quarter horse was the most intelligent on the cross county course, whilst my other mount, my thoroughbred was the most courageous at cross country. I purchased my loving arab for a dressage horse because of his head carriage, but although intelligent, to silly and moreover small (15.3---a rather large arab) to jump big.
when is a clydesdale a shire horse :S - shires are a different breed
- but yes some can jump - but no i don't mean above 80cm
my mates clydie - who i rode at esk
was up to 60cm at that point, im pretty sure he's up to about 80 cm by now
and also farm horses are not cold bloods cold bloods are defined by their thick bones, height, feathering and ability to pull vast amounts of weight but they also make great riding horses - some even grand prix dressage
FINALLY looking back at all your comments you are the one with the best sensible answer not like the people sayin horses have to be 'thin' or not a big build!!! x
thankyou so much... I'm hoping people willeventually learn that opinions, are like fire... interesting and can make awesome things aka fireworks... but they can also burn back on the people that voice them... and the who they are aiming them at... hope people commenting here neva made you feel stupid coz that is low...
erm no not really people just need to read into horses and how high they can jump coz cobs can jump in the olympics coz John whitaker has atleast 4 cobs coz he goes to some massive shows and jumpis OVER 6ft with them therefore i know i am right hehe lol xxx
no it shouldnt and no offence but thats sick No horse atall should be thin thats just cruelty to animals and if thats how youu see it then i suggest you rethink
I HAVE A GREAT IDEA
lets see how high you can jump and if its not as high as 5ft youu are to fat then i want you to jump 6ft oh no youu need to be thinner make yourself anorexice that should work....ERRR NO WOULD YOU EVER DO THIS???
this is what your saying we should be doing to horses???
iL0veMyHorseeJAKEx: You have to learn English before posting comments and no offence.
The idea is not to make horses thinner on a diet ! but it is in their nature; some races of horses are thin and muscular which enable them to be the best at jumping, like the Arabian horse !
also youu said cold blooded horses cant jump there is no such thing as a cold blooded horse as they are mammals and it was the term you put it in and btw i dont care about my english im not exactly gonna be all perfect english im on youtube for god sake and larger horses can jump better than slimmer horses sometimes and what you said should be accounted with the correct meaning and if they have to be a slimmer build how come chunky 17hh horses are in massive sj comps they can jump 6ft so...
A cold blooded horse is another term for a DRAFT HORSE. There is such a thing as a cold blooded horse. It's not literal. Please, learn. Horse that jump higher are usually thinner because they are sports horses and sports horses are generally hot-bloods or warm-bloods. Both, when sports horses, are sleek and muscular. You can't get a big draft horse to throw it's 1.5k pound self over a 6 foot jump. They're too heavy to be airborne like that. Sports horses aren't "chunky". They're and MUSCULAR.
Uh... Not at all. You can jump a cob, but not some 6 foot jumps like you're saying. Cobs are small and chunky, yes, but I never said they couldn't jump. Sure, they can jump smaller things, but they sure as hell can't jump the 6 foot jumps I was talking about with sports horses.
well i have a 15.2hh cob(not small) and he can jump 5ft4 and they use cobs in sj they just have them clipped and hogged and all there feathers off so they dont look much like cobs and they jump MASSIVE!
yes but thats defying the whole point you said a cob couldnt jump like that and now your saying some can but there not sport horses well they have gotta be sport horses most cobs can do dressage SJ &+ XC...3 day eventing all the stuff that ''sport horses'' can do it makes no difference atall its the way they are trained and bred and the genetics!
You know what, go become some crazy cob-riding Olympic jumper. Just stop putting words in my mouth and spouting completely incorrect statements. It's not amusing any more.
don't forget, there are different types of cobs. although they all are still cobs, they show in different levels depending on hieght. so they can be small and chunky, or taller and leaner... and everything inbetween :P
my horse all ways rears when she spooks at the 1.30 m jumps but i just show her who boss and if she dont listen i show that i have the whip and she hoons off
i dont get it, why does he need to jump cross rails?( i dont jump) just when i ride my freinds horse, but i know nothing about it, shes just to nervous to jump her horse oner like4 feet ,so i do it, but i dont knoe nothing bout jumpin
A Horse is thinking..OMG My Legs will hurt if I hit this Thing!!

horses2ride: You aren't supposed to jump higher than a crossrail (6-8 inches) in a western saddle. It can seriously injure your horse.

you really SHOULDN'T jump a horse at all in a western sadddle cause it can give them back problems and can give VERY serious injures

i dont get it, why does he need to jump cross rails?( i dont jump) just when i ride my freinds horse, but i know nothing about it, shes just to nervous to jump her horse oner like4 feet ,so i do it, but i dont knoe nothing bout jumpin
buffalogirl95 3 years ago
crossrails are small and easy for beginner jumpers to jump because they don't have to worry about jumping the center.

ahh, i see, thanks
buffalogirl95 3 years ago
A crossrail also helps someone new to jumping practice getting to the center of the jump
