I have 12 chickens that's 3 cockerels and 9 hens. We have them as free-range as possible using there eggs and meat. I find it best for me and them to to first catch them in the morning as they leave the night area then later in the morning take it under my arm into the shed witch is quiet and dull. Sit down with it on my knee stroke it neck feathers to ensure its relaxed then with a sharp blade gently cut the large blood vessels in the neck. They don't struggle just a little movement then gone

I've watched several of these 'how to kill a chicken' videos and I've come to the opinion that cutting the head is probably the most humane, but not necessarily the most comfortable for the executioner to watch.

Out of respect for the animal, decapitation is probably the method I'd use.

It is the method I already use for fish.

@chelseaforever10 It's not instant. The head stays alive as long as there is oxygen in the brain. It takes about 7-15 seconds for the brain to "switch off". The chicken feels the cut around it's neck, and can still SEE for a little while before it dies. The best way to do it is to put the knife in to it's beak, and poke the knife up through it's pallette. Severs the brain in two down the middle, cutting off all nervous system activity INSTANTLY. Then you can bleed it by cutting an artery.

You pull the neck you don't twist it. Pulling it snaps the snl chord and leaves the chicken to involuntary spasms for a few short seconds, but the chicken is dead instantly, oblivious to pain. Twisting it can only partially snap the spinal chord.
