Dogs can't be shot down (of course they can still be killed but a few dogs getting shot is trivial), like you said you can still play while they are in action. They can also get people who are camping inside buildings. On certain maps I can go through an entire span of a gunship out and only get a few kills because of this. Dogs almost always guarantee a good amount of kills.
