It's really too bad that they decided to change the color scheme of the ship. I saw her just after she was put on display and, though she had some wear, she was beautiful. Restoration is one thiing, but changing her has made her less of an attraction than my memories.
Just saw this beauty last week. Unfortunately, they have pretty much abandoned the display. All the lights on it were off. Was still a big thrill to see the old girl in person though.

@Daehawk Actually, in both cases, that's exactly what happened to both. There is a miniature of what the Reliant may have looked like (close enough, at least) if you are curious. Star Fleet Battles, Federation NCL (New Light Cruiser). I'm working on a model of the pre-Trek USS Yorktown (the ship's original name), so I'll upload the video of it's construction later.
are there any good books that can be reccomended about the creation of the original series? What were the deliberations about plots, characters, how accurate physics should be modled, etc?
Many of the things we have now are because of Star Trek. Designers are constantly saying how they were inspired by Star Trek design and items. So glad I grew up in the era of such a wonderful show.
I actually enjoyed your video, and can identify with how you felt at that moment, its nice to know the model ended up at the Smithstonian, the same cannot be said about the Galileo shuttle craft of course, which perhaps is just as relevant. Many Thanks Alan

the holy grail of science fiction: THE STAR SHIP ENTERPRISE ........SPACE, THE FINAL FRONTIER......THESE ARE THE VOYAGES OF THE STARSHIP: "ENTERPRISE".......YES!
@douro20 I only live an hour away from DC and I have been visiting the Air and Space Museum and gawking at the Enterprise since 2001 and I never saw any charter that stated displays at the Museum had to be models of real ships satellites etc. The Enterprise was given to the Air and Space museum back in the 70's and has been on display there in one form or another since.
@douro20 Not really. According to the Smithsonian, science fiction forms a definite part of aerospace chronology. They also have (or at least had for many years, but I suspect it's still there) the pilot episode of STAR TREK, "Where No Man Has Gone Before," available for viewing.

I LOVE the Air and Space Museum, and I do think I got to see Enterprise there once, as well as Skylab and at least one of the Apollos, and LOVE the bookstore! Also Leonard Nimoy narrated one of the IMAX films that showed a blastoff to space of the space shuttle and it's rotation around the planet....you could really feel the rumbling. Last time I went they were really emphasizing the push to get to Mars.
What is the history of the design of this model? What was the process for creating it? Where did the ideas for the designs for the Star Trek spaceships come from and who was the model designer?
@ScipioAfricanusI The Enterprise was designed by Matt Jeffries and was a long process. He sketched out several different Enterprises and Roddenberry would look at them and tell him what he liked and didn't like and Matt would go back to the drawing board and re-design it until he hit upon the one that Roddenberry liked.
Coincidentaly, The Jeffries tube that is mentioned so prominently in the series is a direct shout out to Matt by Gene.
But I wonder why they just don't finish her, to make her look like the fans know she's supposed to look like.
One whole side of her is unfinished! No windows, and no starfleet markings! (Well... I think the nacelle on that side has it's markings but the rest is bare!
@TheMorninglightmount Totally. To bad Rick Berman sold out to JJAbrams and turned out that last piece of trash movie totally ignoring 40 years of canon.
@thejessejames76able So true! It's amazing how many gadgets, concepts and technologies the original series actually predicted. Despite its short run, if any TV series deserves to be celebrated and remembered for its cultural and inspirational value its Star Trek. Every TV series and movie, post 1965, that has dealt with space travel owes its successes to this show
@TheUnNerved Are you kidding? Technologically, we've surpassed the Star Trek world a long time ago. Yes, we need to get busy and develop faster-than-light travel. But, can we achieve the utopia that we saw in Star Trek?
@TrekToons Really? We have food replicators, solid matter transporters and universal translators? I would say we are mere cavemen at this point by comparison.
@TheUnNerved not with the current branches of government in Washington :(. NASA has been underfunded for so many years, and now they'll receive even less and force many to find work in the private sector :(.
@TheUnNerved I agree. Seems like we'd be half way there by now. 2001 has come and gone, and all we can send to Jupiter are measly, fragile, little space probes that have virtually no onboard intelligence. But alas, making the world of Star Trek something of a reality takes monumental amounts of cooperation and self sacrifice by the entire human race, it will never happen. We are all too greedy, selfish, and vengeful to even get started. I doubt even an impending global catastrophe would do it.
@TheUnNerved We are prisoners of our refusal to grow up. We are full of fear and worship a past that never existed. Consider this , we are in the second decade of the 21st century and we still have sexism , racism, homophobics. We are far from a a cuture of compassion. We still argue about evolution or if the earth is flat.We still kill in the name of the religon of the week.We live in reality shows about make believe lives. How can the ,petty, crazy, foolish, hateful, and greedy gain the stars?
@fred5399 Yes an in just 100 years we fought 2 world wars. Launched a man into space and then landed another one on the moon. 15 countries some of whom didn't get a long before built a Space Station. That took team work from around the world to build. We can and we do evolve out of these chains that hold us back. We've done it time and again and asking these questions is a good start. Acknowledging the problem is huge now changing our ways is the next step don't worry we can do it.
The Titanic replica was only a portion of the hull. Only the starboard side, if I remember correctly. It was half, and the other side was never built. All shots were filmed from the right side, and the other side was simply mirrored in CGI. It was not an actual full replica that could float. It was built on land.
Not unlike the Galactica, the ship was just as much a character as the actual actors. I still can't watch Star Trek 3's ending without crying like a baby.
@ShingoEX YOU werent the only one. In THAT film and the End of Wrath of Kahn I never heard so many men weep in my life. And yeah i was one of them. Sue me
Love the original model, hate the excessive inaccurate "weathering" done for the '91 25th anniversary. It's long overdue for the Smithsonian to do it right.
I am very grateful that the "Enterprise" Has a space in the greatest museum in America. I do think its a bit tacky that its in the gift shop though. It would leave one to wonder if she could be had for 3 easy payments of 19.95! And you are being pretty hard on a fan.. A fan that actually traveled and spent his time and money, most important to me,shared the experience with the rest of us!
So if he acts nerdy and is viewed as gay, who gives a flying brown turd.
@EvilCleric No, I am certainly not suggesting there be a permanent and complete Trek exhibit in the Smithsonian. That's what Las Vegas is for. This model used to be mounted in a space just off the area where the Apollo 11 lunar landing is recreated. In that space, there was nary a cheesey gift shop in site.
You know, it's total bullshit that this model is stuck in the middle of the goddamned Smithsonian gift shop. The fact that Star Trek has inspired so many scientists and engineers responsible for the advanced technology we enjoy today demands that this be on display in a much more worthy and dignified space.
@DaftSwank A more dignified place In the Smithsonian Museum? Like what an entire exhibit devoted to Star trek? They made use of what space they had. Does it matter if it was in the gift shop? It's not like it was part of a marketing scheme. Had it's own case and everything.
Usually such incredible artifacts of television history are lost to short sightedness its so good to know that this legendary model still exists! I do wonder if the TMP model still exists as well! I really hope that it does
@katakisLives I think at least one of the TMP-era filming models was sold at one of the Christie's auctions. I'd rather see it in a museum than in private ownership, but at least it still exists and I know someone's taking good care of it. Speaking of filming models... y'know, when I watched the TV show, I really had no idea just how massive the model really was until I visited the Smithsonian and, to my surprise, there she was in the store. Fourteen feet from bow to stern - amazing. =)
abanks1959 I never said her restoration was perfect. But when she used to hang from the ceiling with motors and running lights on. She still looked like a big toy.
I wish they hadn't restored it with new paint, they should have kept it as original as possible, or at least any restoration should have been only to make it look exactly as it looked on the show
It's a shame that this beautiful lady will probably never fly across our tv screen's again. The new special effects are awsome. The younger generation's will wonder what we are talking about in reguards to this model. And I like her new look. Before she looked too much like a toy.
@kitt2000car Just me, I think they "F" up the model. Now it looks like she is shooting oil from every seam. The rebuild team went ape sh!t crazy . No production sup. would allow that type of look to be used in a film. This model needs to be returned to it's former good looks, please!
Hey man, I am really glad you got to finally see the Enterprise. I could tell by your actions just how special it was to you and thats really touching. I grew up with Star Trek and I really get happy when I see it still have that effect on people.
You'll notice the port side is completely blank of details. That's because that side was never used in shooting, and was used for support and lighting, power and so forth. When the smithsonian got it, they had to rebuild that side of the ship because it was just a mess. A little trivia, there you go...
I am now embarassed to be a Star Trek fan. I seriously hope those suspenders were ironic, good sir. If not, then shame on you. You perpetuate the nerd stereotype in the worst way possible.
so its in the gift shop now? I was told they moved it to the dulles Va. location, after finding out it was no longer hanging in the air& space in D.C.
@helrod The motors that spin the veins in the bussards had a habit of seizing up after a while. I just suggested they make a new one that can be lit up on a regular basis and it would have easily replaceable motors.
I'd like them to make a theme hotel based on the interior of the Enterprise. You could rent "quarters", hold conventions in a room designed to look like the hangar bay,(what a place to have the next Comic-con!), order meals in advance so when you show up at the galley you give your number and get your tray from that slot in the wall. Waitresses could wear those Sixties Yeoman's uniforms.
Tried making a model of the constitution but so far can only do the Sovereign, Miranda, Proxima, Constellation, and Defiant class starships =.= I failed at Voyager
Fantastic stuff! But at the risk of sounding like a complete fool, I just noticed that the port side secondary hull windows are missing? Am I seeing things? Is it the poor quality of the video or did the studio model not have them built on the port side??
I am totally and completely jealous of you. But thanks for posting this. She is the first and in my humble opinion, the best of all the Enterprise designs. She is beautiful!
Wow. Looks like you had fun doing this and hamming it up. I had the opportunity last month to see the real thing and there is no comparison. But, if you can't see it in person, this helps :)
Truly, I think she is every bit the equal of any design within 300 light years

Seems like we'd be half way there by now. 2001 has come and gone, and all we can send to Jupiter are measly, fragile, little space probes that have virtually no onboard intelligence. But alas, making the world of Star Trek something of a reality takes monumental amounts of cooperation and self sacrifice by the entire human race, it will never happen. We are all too greedy, selfish, and vengeful to even get started. I doubt even an impending global catastrophe would do it.
dewfall56 3 months ago
@TheUnNerved We are prisoners of our refusal to grow up. We are full of fear and worship a past that never existed. Consider this , we are in the second decade of the 21st century and we still have sexism , racism, homophobics. We are far from a a cuture of compassion. We still argue about evolution or if the earth is flat.We still kill in the name of the religon of the week.We live in reality shows about make believe lives. How can the ,petty, crazy, foolish, hateful, and greedy gain the stars?

@fred5399 It's time to give up childish things...
TheUnNerved 3 months ago
@fred5399 Yes an in just 100 years we fought 2 world wars. Launched a man into space and then landed another one on the moon. 15 countries some of whom didn't get a long before built a Space Station. That took team work from around the world to build. We can and we do evolve out of these chains that hold us back. We've done it time and again and asking these questions is a good start. Acknowledging the problem is huge now changing our ways is the next step don't worry we can do it.

@plotkin514
The Titanic replica was only a portion of the hull. Only the starboard side, if I remember correctly. It was half, and the other side was never built. All shots were filmed from the right side, and the other side was simply mirrored in CGI. It was not an actual full replica that could float. It was built on land.

@sdcox61 THATS how I saw it as well. Kinda sucked. All you could see was the bottom. Much better THIS WAY

Not unlike the Galactica, the ship was just as much a character as the actual actors. I still can't watch Star Trek 3's ending without crying like a baby.

Athena41393 10 months ago
@EvilCleric No, I am certainly not suggesting there be a permanent and complete Trek exhibit in the Smithsonian. That's what Las Vegas is for. This model used to be mounted in a space just off the area where the Apollo 11 lunar landing is recreated. In that space, there was nary a cheesey gift shop in site.

a little bit on the nerd/dork side...i was embarrassed for you! geez...
whitetrashnurse 11 months ago
You know, it's total bullshit that this model is stuck in the middle of the goddamned Smithsonian gift shop. The fact that Star Trek has inspired so many scientists and engineers responsible for the advanced technology we enjoy today demands that this be on display in a much more worthy and dignified space.
DaftSwank 11 months ago
@DaftSwank A more dignified place In the Smithsonian Museum? Like what an entire exhibit devoted to Star trek? They made use of what space they had. Does it matter if it was in the gift shop? It's not like it was part of a marketing scheme. Had it's own case and everything.

You missed the bombastic part of the theme!!

Usually such incredible artifacts of television history are lost to short sightedness its so good to know that this legendary model still exists! I do wonder if the TMP model still exists as well! I really hope that it does
katakisLives 11 months ago
@katakisLives I think at least one of the TMP-era filming models was sold at one of the Christie's auctions. I'd rather see it in a museum than in private ownership, but at least it still exists and I know someone's taking good care of it. Speaking of filming models... y'know, when I watched the TV show, I really had no idea just how massive the model really was until I visited the Smithsonian and, to my surprise, there she was in the store. Fourteen feet from bow to stern - amazing. =)

abanks1959 I never said her restoration was perfect. But when she used to hang from the ceiling with motors and running lights on. She still looked like a big toy.
kitt2000car 1 year ago
I wish they hadn't restored it with new paint, they should have kept it as original as possible, or at least any restoration should have been only to make it look exactly as it looked on the show

It's a shame that this beautiful lady will probably never fly across our tv screen's again. The new special effects are awsome. The younger generation's will wonder what we are talking about in reguards to this model. And I like her new look. Before she looked too much like a toy.
kitt2000car 1 year ago
@kitt2000car Just me, I think they "F" up the model. Now it looks like she is shooting oil from every seam. The rebuild team went ape sh!t crazy . No production sup. would allow that type of look to be used in a film. This model needs to be returned to it's former good looks, please!

They should put some figures of the crew standing on the top of the saucer so you can see how large the ship is in comparison to a human.
Syrinx69 1 year ago
You'll notice the port side is completely blank of details. That's because that side was never used in shooting, and was used for support and lighting, power and so forth. When the smithsonian got it, they had to rebuild that side of the ship because it was just a mess. A little trivia, there you go...

I am now embarassed to be a Star Trek fan. I seriously hope those suspenders were ironic, good sir. If not, then shame on you. You perpetuate the nerd stereotype in the worst way possible.
holt2k 1 year ago
It's too bad they "refurbished" it sometime ago and added those awful greenish lines under the main hull. Such a classic design.
spangelosf43 1 year ago
so its in the gift shop now? I was told they moved it to the dulles Va. location, after finding out it was no longer hanging in the air& space in D.C.
sad they dont have the lights on anymore
helrod 1 year ago
Still the coolest after all these years.
49bobbyk 1 year ago
They should laser scanner it and build a new one with LED's and easily replaceable motors in the bussards while leaving the original intact.
MasterJediKyleKatarn 1 year ago
@MasterJediKyleKatarn the old one did have lights and spinning busards,
maybe they broke it when they moved it
helrod 1 year ago
@helrod The motors that spin the veins in the bussards had a habit of seizing up after a while. I just suggested they make a new one that can be lit up on a regular basis and it would have easily replaceable motors.
MasterJediKyleKatarn 1 year ago
I'd like them to make a theme hotel based on the interior of the Enterprise. You could rent "quarters", hold conventions in a room designed to look like the hangar bay,(what a place to have the next Comic-con!), order meals in advance so when you show up at the galley you give your number and get your tray from that slot in the wall. Waitresses could wear those Sixties Yeoman's uniforms.

Fantastic stuff! But at the risk of sounding like a complete fool, I just noticed that the port side secondary hull windows are missing? Am I seeing things? Is it the poor quality of the video or did the studio model not have them built on the port side??
