  • Truly, I think she is every bit the equal of any design within 300 light years

  • Mr. Spock: "Dr. McCoy, this isn't the first time I've put my ass on the line for the Enterprise."

  • They should light it up!

  • you kind of look like riker. oh yea. did you use a shoe to video tape this

  • Love your infectious giddiness. It's nice to see someone who has the same love as I do. Usually I feel like such an outcast. Cheers

  • It's really too bad that they decided to change the color scheme of the ship. I saw her just after she was put on display and, though she had some wear, she was beautiful. Restoration is one thiing, but changing her has made her less of an attraction than my memories.

  • i see this when it was at a science show at the london science museum.. i just stood there dribbling...

  • Great! the original model created for the original series.

    A piece of history.

  • Just saw this beauty last week. Unfortunately, they have pretty much abandoned the display. All the lights on it were off. Was still a big thrill to see the old girl in person though.

  • i can see this was a special moment nice video and best wishes.

  • Get the right music.

  • @paullubliner Maybe he likes this music better? Let his video be what he wants it to be, which is probably just his day out on home video. Just because you make toy choo choos doesn't make your opinion more valid than the guy that flips my burgers.

  • @tomAfisher I heard you were hit by a train.

  • @paullubliner Yes, the secret is to tuck n' roll into the cowcatcher. I've been hit by many trains.

  • @tomAfisher: Yes, of course, that does explain so much.

  • why are you playing music from the movies?

should be music from the original show.

  • Beautiful ship!

  • LOL nice Khan quote there at 0:35ish "There she is!" I'd be geeking out just as much admittedly! :)

  • Yes she is....the NCC-1701 is a timeless design

  • wow you are still getting comments... The NCC-1701 is timeless !

  • What a shame they don't display it with the coloured lights rotating in the rear engines. I still can't wait to go and see it though? Fantastic design!

I appreciate the excellent posting, but I think PRAYING to it is going just a bit too far!!

  • What a shame they don't display it with the coloured lights rotating in the rear engines. I still can't wait to go and see it though? Fantastic design!

  • When I visited in 1980, the Enterprise was in the main museum with all of the other priceless exhibits, where it belongs.

  • My dad and myself went to see it while were were on a 5000 mile motorcycle trip and while it was a little dissapointing to find it in a glass case in the back of the basement gift shop it was good to see it at a museaum to be seen by everyone :)

  • 40 years, 40 years and it still lokks as glorious now as it did way back then

  • i touched that escalator

  • I always hoped that the beloved TOS series Enterprise was being well taken care of by one of our nations leading museums. now I can sleep easier knowing that the real star trek and not the this new alt timeline bs one has a secure history.

  • This tune reminds me the scene of the "shuttle approaching" in "Star Trek - The Motion Picture/Director's Cut"

  • @TheTenderBear that's because it is.

  • Wet dream for the developmentally delayed. Please don't reply to this - I'll only ridicule you, if I answer at all.

  • It needs to be moved to the upper floor and out of the gift shop.

  • I was at the Smithsonian 3 or 4 years ago and looked all over for the Enterprise, but never found it...

  • @jpedwar the Enterprise is at the Space museum over in Virginia by Dulles airport. i believe it is exit 58 off Interstate 66. i to went to washington and looked for the Enterprise and found out it is across the river in Virginia.

  • READ THIS! About the 11' Enterprise! Craig Thompson-"I have to say that when I look back, Props would have paid me to keep it.I probably could have had it for $50, if not for free.I didn't have the foresight to recognize what an icon it would be in future-" (star trek communicator #120) TOS captains chair was fished from the trash after trek was cancelled! In 6-11-08-The Original Series Captains chair from the Bridge set; realized a final sales price of $304,750 (on a bid of $265,000)

  • that deflector isnt the original. It got tossed somewhere along the line.

  • now just get some leprichauns and we can start pwning some klingons!

  • Thumbs Up if at the End of the 3rd 'New' Star Trek Movie, they fix the Temporal Changes then you see this old beauty fly into the movie screen playing that classic Star Trek Theme.

  • u dont realise how big the blydi model is til you see it

  • Best video ever in the history of videos.

  • What the EF? It's in a GIFT SHOP!?!

  • Hard to believe it was supposed to fly upside down till Gene changed his mind one day lol. I guess that's where the Miranda class came from.

Great vid. I hope to go and view it one day.

  • @Daehawk Actually, in both cases, that's exactly what happened to both. There is a miniature of what the Reliant may have looked like (close enough, at least) if you are curious. Star Fleet Battles, Federation NCL (New Light Cruiser). I'm working on a model of the pre-Trek USS Yorktown (the ship's original name), so I'll upload the video of it's construction later.

  • Nice video.

  • are there any good books that can be reccomended about the creation of the original series? What were the deliberations about plots, characters, how accurate physics should be modled, etc?

    Thank you.

  • I forgot to say - WOWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!

  • Many of the things we have now are because of Star Trek. Designers are constantly saying how they were inspired by Star Trek design and items. So glad I grew up in the era of such a wonderful show.

  • I actually enjoyed your video, and can identify with how you felt at that moment, its nice to know the model ended up at the Smithstonian, the same cannot be said about the Galileo shuttle craft of course, which perhaps is just as relevant. Many Thanks Alan

  • *GIIIIIIIIRRRRRRRRLLLLLLLYYYYYYY SSSSHHHHHHHHHHRRRRRRRREEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!*

    i want it.

    i need it.

    i need it NOW!

  • I grew up with this one. This is my favorite. My kids like the Enterprise D, but this is my favorite. Fire it up, Scotty. It's time to get out of Dodge.

  • Nerd heaven.

  • the holy grail of science fiction: THE STAR SHIP ENTERPRISE ........SPACE, THE FINAL FRONTIER......THESE ARE THE VOYAGES OF THE STARSHIP: "ENTERPRISE".......YES!

  • Isn't it odd to see this in a museum which is intended to display actual aerospace technology?

  • @douro20 I only live an hour away from DC and I have been visiting the Air and Space Museum and gawking at the Enterprise since 2001 and I never saw any charter that stated displays at the Museum had to be models of real ships satellites etc. The Enterprise was given to the Air and Space museum back in the 70's and has been on display there in one form or another since.

  • @douro20 Not really. According to the Smithsonian, science fiction forms a definite part of aerospace chronology. They also have (or at least had for many years, but I suspect it's still there) the pilot episode of STAR TREK, "Where No Man Has Gone Before," available for viewing.

  • It's time to wake up!!!!! What are we waiting for? Let's surch, stop wars. Put our money in interresting research.

  • Very cool....I like the "We're not worthy" groveling...LOL.

  • Now all that's left for him to conquer is losing his virginity.

  • Wish the model could have had a 'warp drive' light (if permitted at the Smithsonian)...

    Thanks for sharing rmsinc!

  • they want to cut $55mil from the museum time to tell the gov what you think its time to voice your words to be heard america enough is enough

  • OK, but that's wat he said.

  • This guys as queer as a 3dollar bill

  • Q is up to his no good tactics and has the enterprise trapped in a clear square force field! Quick, all speed to warp 9! scotty................i am giving it all she got captain but she's not moving!.

  • @virtual4desires Q wasnt in the origonal series xP

  • @alphaomega309 Ohhh common, Q is magical. He can warp anywhere he want's lmao. I knew that, just thought i'd toss in a mix.

  • @alphaomega309 Roddenberry once said that looking back, Trelane was probably a "Q".

  • @Mozart1220 Can't be, since áll Q are named 'Q', or have a Q in their name.

  • What a beauty...hard to believe she's almost 50 years old....what a legacy. The first ship we build that takes humans to the stars better be named Enterprise, that's all I gotta say. :)

  • captain we seem to be held in some kind of clear forcefield and surrounded by giants =0)

  • I actually got to see it in person when I was there in the summer of '89...what a great site it was. It's still tons more awe inspiring than the Enterprise from Trek '09 by far.

  • for the fellow Trekkies out there who want to go see the Enterprise, it is NOT at the Smithsonian in Washington DC. it is at the 2nd space museum hangar that is in Virginia, across from Dulles International Airport.

  • @cadillacdude1975 Thankyou so much! I would've gone to the smithsonian and gone crazy looking for it!

  • The video is great, the music is haunting. I LOVE THIS!!!!!

    Strong message to follow

  • Saw her back in 89 for my 6th grade class trip. That was the best part of the trip for me. Second best was eating the freeze dried ice cream.

  • Call me a sap, but I actually cried when I saw her at the museum. Beautiful!

  • @YouFyrst OK, You're a sap. Happy now? Just joking, it was hard to resist. :D

  • I saw her back in 1975 when I visited the museum!

  • I LOVE the Air and Space Museum, and I do think I got to see Enterprise there once, as well as Skylab and at least one of the Apollos, and LOVE the bookstore! Also Leonard Nimoy narrated one of the IMAX films that showed a blastoff to space of the space shuttle and it's rotation around the planet....you could really feel the rumbling. Last time I went they were really emphasizing the push to get to Mars.

  • you would think that it would be displayed fully lit up...I mean its an american icon in the smithsonian ...whats up with that?

  • @bozo47p It's over 40 years old and built with special lights that don't exist anymore. You wouldn't want to see it damaged, would you?

  • What is the history of the design of this model? What was the process for creating it? Where did the ideas for the designs for the Star Trek spaceships come from and who was the model designer?

  • @ScipioAfricanusI The Enterprise was designed by Matt Jeffries and was a long process. He sketched out several different Enterprises and Roddenberry would look at them and tell him what he liked and didn't like and Matt would go back to the drawing board and re-design it until he hit upon the one that Roddenberry liked.

Coincidentaly, The Jeffries tube that is mentioned so prominently in the series is a direct shout out to Matt by Gene.

  • THAT is the Enterprise! :p

But I wonder why they just don't finish her, to make her look like the fans know she's supposed to look like.

One whole side of her is unfinished! No windows, and no starfleet markings! (Well... I think the nacelle on that side has it's markings but the rest is bare!

  • What a beautiful boat.... glad you got to see her in person, and thank you for sharing.

  • the ship from Close Encounters is there also...it is really awesome to see

  • @TheMorninglightmount Totally. To bad Rick Berman sold out to JJAbrams and turned out that last piece of trash movie totally ignoring 40 years of canon.

  • I would love if they brought this model back sometime

  • Not only will Star Trek be remembered in History, it made history, it put hope in the future, that's why it belongs in the Smithsonian Museum!

  • @thejessejames76able So true! It's amazing how many gadgets, concepts and technologies the original series actually predicted. Despite its short run, if any TV series deserves to be celebrated and remembered for its cultural and inspirational value its Star Trek. Every TV series and movie, post 1965, that has dealt with space travel owes its successes to this show

  • Goddamn... it's been long enough. Fellow humans, we need to start building this future.

  • @TheUnNerved Not with this administration.

  • @TheUnNerved Are you kidding? Technologically, we've surpassed the Star Trek world a long time ago. Yes, we need to get busy and develop faster-than-light travel. But, can we achieve the utopia that we saw in Star Trek?

  • @TrekToons Really? We have food replicators, solid matter transporters and universal translators? I would say we are mere cavemen at this point by comparison.

  • @TheUnNerved We just might have that stuff already. At Area 51. I'm still waiting for the flying cars and Sundays trips to Venus. :)

  • @TrekToons LOL, me too.

  • @TheUnNerved not with the current branches of government in Washington :(. NASA has been underfunded for so many years, and now they'll receive even less and force many to find work in the private sector :(.

  • @TheUnNerved And 2 years after the film itself... obama cancelled nasa...

  • @TheUnNerved I agree. Seems like we'd be half way there by now. 2001 has come and gone, and all we can send to Jupiter are measly, fragile, little space probes that have virtually no onboard intelligence. But alas, making the world of Star Trek something of a reality takes monumental amounts of cooperation and self sacrifice by the entire human race, it will never happen. We are all too greedy, selfish, and vengeful to even get started. I doubt even an impending global catastrophe would do it.

  • @TheUnNerved We are prisoners of our refusal to grow up. We are full of fear and worship a past that never existed. Consider this , we are in the second decade of the 21st century and we still have sexism , racism, homophobics. We are far from a a cuture of compassion. We still argue about evolution or if the earth is flat.We still kill in the name of the religon of the week.We live in reality shows about make believe lives. How can the ,petty, crazy, foolish, hateful, and greedy gain the stars?

  • @fred5399 It's time to give up childish things...

  • @fred5399 Yes an in just 100 years we fought 2 world wars. Launched a man into space and then landed another one on the moon. 15 countries some of whom didn't get a long before built a Space Station. That took team work from around the world to build. We can and we do evolve out of these chains that hold us back. We've done it time and again and asking these questions is a good start. Acknowledging the problem is huge now changing our ways is the next step don't worry we can do it.

  • @plotkin514

The Titanic replica was only a portion of the hull. Only the starboard side, if I remember correctly. It was half, and the other side was never built. All shots were filmed from the right side, and the other side was simply mirrored in CGI. It was not an actual full replica that could float. It was built on land.

  • @sdcox61 THATS how I saw it as well. Kinda sucked. All you could see was the bottom. Much better THIS WAY

  • Not unlike the Galactica, the ship was just as much a character as the actual actors. I still can't watch Star Trek 3's ending without crying like a baby.

  • @ShingoEX YOU werent the only one. In THAT film and the End of Wrath of Kahn I never heard so many men weep in my life. And yeah i was one of them. Sue me

  • Love the original model, hate the excessive inaccurate "weathering" done for the '91 25th anniversary. It's long overdue for the Smithsonian to do it right.

  • Thats just how I felt seeing her there too...... loved it

  • Perfect music.

  • I saw the studio model of the Refit model Enterprise at the Planet Hollywood in NYC on my senior trip....definitely the best part.

  • man i hope these are the type of star ships in the future lol

  • The original enterprise rocks! Suck it Abrahms and your pile oh crap!

  • you cut the music off at the best part

  • Its so... SHINY!

I wonder if i'm the only Browncoat/Trekkie in the whole Uni'Verse? (prove me wrong, please)

  • @Starkiller1701

Sir... you're goram wrong. I loves FireFly and I'm currently re-watching TOS.

  • @RaPositivist Thank You!! I am not alone!

  • sweet Ralph

  • Cool, man!!! Only thing it needs INTERIOR DETAILS (full)! (Including WORKING Elevator turbo verical/horizontal lifts)

  • Wow Excellent video ,glad you were there. Can't wait to go myself. Thanks for the vid.

  • Wow! That's pretty impressive!

  • I would love to see it!

  • Who is she?

  • I am very grateful that the "Enterprise" Has a space in the greatest museum in America. I do think its a bit tacky that its in the gift shop though. It would leave one to wonder if she could be had for 3 easy payments of 19.95! And you are being pretty hard on a fan.. A fan that actually traveled and spent his time and money, most important to me,shared the experience with the rest of us!

So if he acts nerdy and is viewed as gay, who gives a flying brown turd.

  • @EvilCleric No, I am certainly not suggesting there be a permanent and complete Trek exhibit in the Smithsonian. That's what Las Vegas is for. This model used to be mounted in a space just off the area where the Apollo 11 lunar landing is recreated. In that space, there was nary a cheesey gift shop in site.

  • Is this stll there

  • a little bit on the nerd/dork side...i was embarrassed for you! geez...

  • You know, it's total bullshit that this model is stuck in the middle of the goddamned Smithsonian gift shop. The fact that Star Trek has inspired so many scientists and engineers responsible for the advanced technology we enjoy today demands that this be on display in a much more worthy and dignified space.

  • @DaftSwank A more dignified place In the Smithsonian Museum? Like what an entire exhibit devoted to Star trek? They made use of what space they had. Does it matter if it was in the gift shop? It's not like it was part of a marketing scheme. Had it's own case and everything.

  • You missed the bombastic part of the theme!!

  • Usually such incredible artifacts of television history are lost to short sightedness its so good to know that this legendary model still exists! I do wonder if the TMP model still exists as well! I really hope that it does

  • @katakisLives I think at least one of the TMP-era filming models was sold at one of the Christie's auctions. I'd rather see it in a museum than in private ownership, but at least it still exists and I know someone's taking good care of it. Speaking of filming models... y'know, when I watched the TV show, I really had no idea just how massive the model really was until I visited the Smithsonian and, to my surprise, there she was in the store. Fourteen feet from bow to stern - amazing. =)

  • WEEE

  • is that the NX-01?

  • @CRAZYhill112or999 No its the ncc 1701 Uss enterprise

  • 45 years from now I'd like to think a piece of Oceanic 815 will be on display at the Smithsonian as well..

  • "There she is!!" you and i could totally hang out. nice Kahn impression.

  • What an honor

  • abanks1959 I never said her restoration was perfect. But when she used to hang from the ceiling with motors and running lights on. She still looked like a big toy.

  • I wish they hadn't restored it with new paint, they should have kept it as original as possible, or at least any restoration should have been only to make it look exactly as it looked on the show

  • WHAT A DORK!

  • @Superbowler08 Now that was an intelligent...

  • brought tears to my eyes too man. Most fantastic video on youtube thanks!!

  • It's a shame that this beautiful lady will probably never fly across our tv screen's again. The new special effects are awsome. The younger generation's will wonder what we are talking about in reguards to this model. And I like her new look. Before she looked too much like a toy.

  • @kitt2000car Just me, I think they "F" up the model. Now it looks like she is shooting oil from every seam. The rebuild team went ape sh!t crazy . No production sup. would allow that type of look to be used in a film. This model needs to be returned to it's former good looks, please!

  • In all of it's 1969 Ford truck primer gray glory!!!

  • like going on a pilgrimage to mecca.....actually better than that!!!

  • Hey man, I am really glad you got to finally see the Enterprise. I could tell by your actions just how special it was to you and thats really touching. I grew up with Star Trek and I really get happy when I see it still have that effect on people.

  • As I recall, its in a pivotal spot,the souvenior shop...LOL!

  • As I recall, its in a pivotal spot, the souvenior shop...

  • Brought tears to my eyes. It would be like a pilgramage to me.

    Thank you my friend.

  • There were actually a bunch of models used in the show. The Seattle Sci-Fi Museum has one.

  • ncc-1701 no bloody a, b, c, OR d

  • 4 people suck.

  • Why would they put it in the part of the gift shop where nobody goes, I had a thousand pictures of this but then i broe the camera

  • I would also be on my knees, "All Hail The Mighty Enterprise!" The actual ship from for all those original episodes.

  • Only a true fanboy would use Khan's line at 0:31. And I say that with the utmost respect--I quote Khan myself from time to time :)

  • There's something wrong with putting Enterprise in the gift shop- even if it is only a model.

  • Too bad they screwed up the paintjob.

  • this guy's a fucking nutjob...

  • @XFSXsnip3rX But in a GOOD way.

  • They should put some figures of the crew standing on the top of the saucer so you can see how large the ship is in comparison to a human.

  • You'll notice the port side is completely blank of details. That's because that side was never used in shooting, and was used for support and lighting, power and so forth. When the smithsonian got it, they had to rebuild that side of the ship because it was just a mess. A little trivia, there you go...

  • I am now embarassed to be a Star Trek fan. I seriously hope those suspenders were ironic, good sir. If not, then shame on you. You perpetuate the nerd stereotype in the worst way possible.

  • It's too bad they "refurbished" it sometime ago and added those awful greenish lines under the main hull. Such a classic design.

  • so its in the gift shop now? I was told they moved it to the dulles Va. location, after finding out it was no longer hanging in the air& space in D.C.

sad they dont have the lights on anymore

  • Still the coolest after all these years.

  • They should laser scanner it and build a new one with LED's and easily replaceable motors in the bussards while leaving the original intact.

  • @MasterJediKyleKatarn the old one did have lights and spinning busards,

maybe they broke it when they moved it

  • @helrod The motors that spin the veins in the bussards had a habit of seizing up after a while. I just suggested they make a new one that can be lit up on a regular basis and it would have easily replaceable motors.

  • I'd like them to make a theme hotel based on the interior of the Enterprise. You could rent "quarters", hold conventions in a room designed to look like the hangar bay,(what a place to have the next Comic-con!), order meals in advance so when you show up at the galley you give your number and get your tray from that slot in the wall. Waitresses could wear those Sixties Yeoman's uniforms.

  • The original Great Lady of the Stars, the NCC-1701.

  • Tried making a model of the constitution but so far can only do the Sovereign, Miranda, Proxima, Constellation, and Defiant class starships =.= I failed at Voyager

  • Oh now I know where it is... -.- I really wanted to use that picture as my comp background

  • Fantastic stuff! But at the risk of sounding like a complete fool, I just noticed that the port side secondary hull windows are missing? Am I seeing things? Is it the poor quality of the video or did the studio model not have them built on the port side??

  • Wow....Now I know how Kirk felt~Love at first glance.

  • I am totally and completely jealous of you. But thanks for posting this. She is the first and in my humble opinion, the best of all the Enterprise designs. She is beautiful!

  • Ahhh......she's a beauty for certain!

  • Wow. Looks like you had fun doing this and hamming it up. I had the opportunity last month to see the real thing and there is no comparison. But, if you can't see it in person, this helps :)
