Don't buy one. I bought a Freeagent Go about 6 months ago (new) because I don't have a computer, and a few days ago, it stopped running. Nothing was done to it- the body is in perfect condition. Seagate's warranty will give me a replacement, but in order to recover the files (and to be honest, those are worth far more to me than their hard drive), I would have to pay over $1000 for data recovery. This is the second Seagate I've owned, and the exact same thing happened before.

I freaking hate drives that come with software installed on them. In an ideal world, I plug it in, a non-windows operating system makes a confirmation noise, and then I can send data to it. I don't need some manga character popping up on the screen and spraying spherical animals with KY while DDR Butterfly plays as a trojan warrior named Sony rides up on a white horse and carries my data off to valhalla 2.0 where special market angels decide what I want to buy next for me. Also, cocks.

JUNK! I just bought Seagate 500gb free agent Go one week ago. It has already failed after extremely minimal use. Never dropped, just sat next to my computer to transfer simple video and text files which it did fine for 5 or 6 transfers before suddenly not transfering any more files ( with over 470 GB still free ), not recognizing itself and just beeps every 1 to 2 seconds! Seagate needs a lawsuit brought against them. I bought this as a reliable backup for my data.

I would never buy seagate i work in retail selling computers and doing repair work... whats the drive that I always see failing? Seagate! we had so many faulty Seagate drives that now we exclusively sell Western Digital or Samsung. True you dont get the 5 year warranty instead its 3 years, but whats the good of a 5 year warranty when you've lost all your data?

I've gotta say that the internal seagate drives that we sell in the desktops and some servers rarely fail (I've only ever seen two fail). So I've gotta say I am very surprised to hear of all the failures you're talking about... Did they fail due to bad sectors or they won't spin up or what?

Very professional video and the hard drive looks amazing I have a 1 TB western digital FireWire 800 mybook drive though the build quality is poor ESP compared to this. I'll be investing in one for college next year and keep my WD at home for backs ups.

Is it powered by the usb or firewire cable or does it need a separate power cable?

The firewire and usb cabled powers the device. However if you have USB 1.1 You need the power cable. But the power comes from an addition usb so you dont need the plug which is very handy when out.

Yes I am getting this one because it is aluminum not plastic and aluminum lasts longer. I also like the dock plus witch has a usb hub built into it and it will be nice for the laptop I am getting.
