The Barenaked Ladies lied when they said that. Wanna know why? Because I asked my dad if it's an appropriate thing to say to an authorized person when he/she orders, and he said no. So the appropriate answer is to obey them.
Ever heard of a joke? Because Ed was just kidding! He´d never seriously tell children to disobey their parents. So don´t tell me I´m wrong for laughing at a joke that was funny.
You can´t be serious. Please tell me that wasn´t a serious question. He would be kidding because it was funny. And they´re there to entertain the audience. It worked. People were laughing.
Ed was most certainly joking, and I HIGHLY doubt any kids learned anything from Ed when he said that. If they were old enough to understand, they would understand it isn't appropriate. If they were too young, no matter.
Barenaked Ladies are all about kidding around, and their fans know that.
Heard this previewed on the cruise and I LOVE it! I wish I didn't live on the East coast of the US right now - I'd have been at this show! Thanks for posting.
It's got a lot of little hidden meanings in it that kids wouldn't get - perhaps why we adults love it so much? My friend did say a 8-year-old in her class did pick up on the Gordie Howe thing though!
Whether they're singing children's songs or grownup's songs, these guys rock. And their drummer is badass, too.

I wish Ed were my dad! He's got to be one of the greatest dads around. "The appropriate answer is 'Get a job!'"

It wasn't really even mildly serious or fiercely urgent. But it probably taught some kids to disobey parents.
