@wrussell391 Actually, he played at my music venue last year here in Portland, Oregon. He tours a lot, and writes and records. He's not THAT weird...just great!
@wrussell391 hes a funny guy. ive met him a few times, and ive got everything hes ever made. i met him when i was only 11 in chicago, we were staying in the same hotel. i told him i was a big fan, and he offered me the bag of cheetos he was eating.
@wrussell391 Actually he broke out of one hahaha Seriously though, he's actually a really fab guy and hope he comes down here to Sydney Aust again. Ironically I think at least two members of Wall of Voodoo are now no longer with us, and are pushing up daisies. -daz in oz
Its a bit like those albums from woolies in the 70's Top ten songs not by the original artists. A K-tel style video. clearly an early vid and soundtrack but not Stans first vid on the Tube which if a recall had him swinging his arms around quite a bit after being introduced by Paula Yates RIP!
Paula yeate introduced the band with the opening saying that this group was that good you thought they had walnut whips down their triusers"gospel" way before their time if you get a chance listen to call of the west.
The scene: Calexico, Kalifornia. The players: a guerro grade skool kid and his little caucasion hombre buddy. The only two white boys in the whole skool in 1962. The only radio it seemed, was ... "Mexican Radio". The only kids' TV show at all was "SuperCar" ... with English sub-titles.
This tune has a special meaning for some of us "howlie kids". lolol! :-D
I've been looking for any videos of this song by the wall of voodoo, and this is the best i can find... sadly though, the audio track and video feed are out of sync... ah... memories, a powerful thing.
Seriously, if you let a drum machine turn you away from music, you're going to miss out on some of the best bands. Personally, I love drum machines and synths and think they have a really cool sound. It would be boring if every band conformed to the "guitar/bass/singer/drums" lineup.
thanks for the response, but wow i didnt this and im kinda shocked !! how did it happend and WOW im so gettin into the wall and i feel like i just got robbed of some amazing talent !!
"I understand, just a little. No comprende, it's riddle". I still use that line when speaking to a Spanish-speaking person. No one has clue where it comes from.
Astute comments. These guys, unlike so many rock bands, can actually play their songs properly.
I saw them years ago in London. They opened for Bow Wow Wow and were received with irritated impatience when they weren't being bored.
But they were damn good. They did Ring of Fire, the Johnny Cash song, and some song about a tetse fly, in which Ridgeway swatted an imaginary fly away from his ear.
A good weird band that deserves to be remembered- and listened to.
Actually there is a drum machine carrying the beat, the drummer is playing behind it. I used to have the actual drum machine. Bought it from a friend of the band. It still had the beat programmed into it. It was a Korg... it's now dead with most of the early electronics from that era. Made cheap with planned obsolescence.
@SureFire420 Stan still performs...friend him on Myspace...I have seen them live 100 years ago in the 80's! I miss the 80's! I know I have to get over it:) I love this group, but Stan is Wall of Voodoo...
Its the 80's and the whole audience is probably on cocaine. Stan Ridgway went solo from here and continues to put out great stuff all the time. Tours and shows too. Saw him recently in Austin and he's still the greatest songwriter! See him and you'll get hooked.
True, it's crisper and tighter as a studio outing...but you have to love the frenzy of the group live, and the cool jerkiness of their movements, Stan's facial expressions, et cetera...there are great aspects of both versions.
Can somebody please sync the audio and video? This is too good to suffer through! Thank you.

Not sure which is more enjoyable here...the sheer epic-ness of this song, or the guitarist's 80's coke-jaw. Your opinion??
scandango 2 months ago
The age of cocaine, and the guitar player certainly was fucked up here. His jaw is out of control.

SirHatchporch 2 years ago
@SirHatchporch , RIP have they passed on?? or do you mean the music?
tangoseven2 2 years ago
@tangoseven2 Yes, guitarist Marc Moreland and percussionist Joe Nanini both died a few years back.
Singer Stan Ridgway also has a solo song called "Talking Wall of Voodoo Blues" where he mentions their deaths.

Joe died of a brain hemorrhage in 2000 (age 45) and Marc died of liver failure in 2002 (age 44). It's unbelievably sad that both died so young.
