@TransAbsolute I thought that too about his posture initially, but if you take a closer look, a surprising number of advanced flautists have the same posture. It's common practice, and it's also more comfortable on the arms then to have them raised rigid (especially true when practicing for hours and hours, yes? :D).
he is just simply amazing :) Does anyone know what sorta standard you need to be to play this song...? I mean yes it slow but doesn't sound easy either hahaha, but i love it so much and would love to play it :D (im doing 4th grade atm)
I too got married with this as my walking in music - this is the one song that me and my dad, Wesley White can play together and so it is very, very special to our family - I wrote in to Jim'll Fix it to meet James Galway and got knocked back, however, it is still the most spiritual tune ever to me and always makes me think back to my and my Dad, mid seventies doing our thing!!!!!!!!x x
i too have split from my Ex, we were together for 4 years, been almoast a year, and still i hurt, although it is getting better, been out with a couple of girls since, not the same thou, and she has found some else now, ahh !! love aint all its made out to be, PAIN !! this song helps me think of lovely holidays etc, wish things were diffrent
Very nice. You could also make your own accompaniment to this by inputting into Finale or Sibelius. Just play back the guitar (or piano) while reading the flute part. You can also export the piano part as a sound file for playalong.
i dont know why people have to be rude and make shitty comments. James Galway is cool...i was a death metal person and the devil in me got a smirk on his face and and started playing stuff like this because i knew it pissed people off....so there
My 9 year old daughter just won the local urdd (welsh music compeition) playing this very tune and it brought a tear to our eyes. We are so proud of you Leah
swanseastew - I'm surprised you did not post Leah's performance yet ! She must be sensational ! This sounds from your description she was competing against lots of adults, all the more impressive. I've got some playlists featuring flute if your family might be interested. Although I'm virtually half & half Danish/German, my name says I am Welsh - Chuck Jones.
I enjoyed our drive up the Wye to Bangor and a day on Anglesey 3 years ago, just beautiful ! ! ! !
I know people think this is a simple song and that a preliminary flute player could learn this, but its not about difficulty. Its simply about technique and texture, which Sir Galway provides awesomely.
And, to all the snobby flute players who think they could do better...
He's the one making the money, not you :) (if the golden flute counts for anything, yes?)
Any musician knows that playing something as written isnt where the skill lies. Making music goes far beyond what is written.
I even tried playing this song after I heard this recording. The notes are easy, trying to blend everything together isnt.
Example: Too much tongue ruins this piece. You have to know how to glide in and out of each phrase. If you play it like Tu Tu Tu Tu it sounds like ass.
Brilliant comment! I couldn't agree more. I love to see good covers and comments saying 'it's rubbish nothing like the original' really annoy me. It's all in the delivery and to give a song a piece of yourself is great thing.
this man is good read the book about him,all the snobs like to put him down because they are jealous, poor boy comes good fact. How many of them could play flute with finger injury, also auditioning for Berlin Philharmonic where piano tries to tell him how to read the score, Sir James now, plain James at the time goes behind the curtain plays the whole part with no music Katchaturian sitting in the stalls decides thats my lead Flautist. end of story .
has any one the flute notes for the loyalist flute band style of playing, i heard a band in belfast playing it and i play in a loyalist band and would love to play this on the rd
Rexicano: I think all this argument about Galway is a matter of personal taste concerning flute players. I do love Maxence Larrieu version of Mercadante and do not like Galway version at all - too 'light and happy' for MY taste. I prefer for example William Bennet badinerie. I prefer Rampal´s version of Tartini concert for example...but this does not mean that Galway is a lousy player, on the contrary: is wonderful. Listen to his Vivaldi four seasons, the guy has good ideas
I´m not a hard die fan of Galway, but he is indeed a fantastic player, and for sure one of the best flutist in the world. Sometimes I think all this people critizing him are just repeating what some of their teachers told them, z.b. that his Bach´s sonatas interpretation are out of style and that sort of comments. But if you listen it when your ears and mind open IS PURE BEAUTY. Or listen the 'pastorale' concerto by J. Rodrigo, or his Khachaturian´s, or his Mendelsohnn, etc. These are GREAT
I agree with Rexicano. Alain Marion was a fantastic flute player I listened to him several times in France. He was really refined and had a sound very rich and not so vulgar!
love this tune by james and have a flute quite simular mines gold and silver though mr galway has a very expensive compared to mine got mine for 800 quid
I don't think he is the best flute player in the world. He is a good business man. But when I want to listen to classical music and now I speak about interpretation, I prefer Rampal or Larrieu, or Adorjan.James Galway has a fantastic technique and a personal sound and vibrato but I don't consider him a great performer of classical music. His Bach Sonatas, for example, are really off style and I prefer Nicolet or Larrieu.

His vibrato makes me want to puke and he loves to play schlock like this piece of crap. Hardy the best flutist in the world. I loved Alain Marion. Much more subtle. But folks sure love the Kitsch.
I agree about the Bach; he really ruins it...playing it in a heavy romantic style at times and racing thru some of it like he's gotta run to the toilet.
Hubert Laws is so much better at both Classical and Jazz as well.
