It was dumb at first, but then when C3PO and R2-D2 came in, I lost my senses when C3PO went on his usual rants again this time about EVE not being good enough for anyone, poor thing XD
I'm confident that if Stanton had gone that route, he would have had Wall-E go out in style. Like the most heroic death scene ever. Consider for a moment that Michael Biehn played both Kyle Reese and Dwayne Hicks, both heroic (but in the traditional action hero sense whereas Wall-E is more like a scapegoat, a martyr who doesn't want to be a martyr) and they both died to death. But then, Stanton wouldn't have tormented his audience like that. Sam Raimi, maybe. }:-P
That would be to0 depressing. That would be like that episode of 'In Living Color' where that guy was supposed to cheer up the homeless people but ends up singing a song about a leprechaun that dies and one of the bums tried to hang himself with his belt.
