So how does one "tweak" these sounds? If not using the stock patches, can you go online to download other patches? Or is this something you just have to figure out as a trained studio engineer and tech/geek? Is it possible for the layman to play with the POD X3 Live rig and find the Holy Tone?
@GooglelyTube theres usually an online library of user created patches that can be downloaded, but anyone can create a patch themselves, you choose amps, speakers, effects, routings etc and make something that sounds good and you can save it to use again later, just might have to read the instructions on larger models like his, the smaller pods are easier to work with
Im surprised hes using the axe fx now. He was a big reason on why I bought the X3 Live in the first place. But when mine got stolen, I bought the new HD500. Talk about a SICK floor processor :)
he uses axe-fx now, instead of line 6. i heard that his main issue with the pod x3 live was road durability. and of course the axe-fx sounds as great as its cost hahaha
I can't wait for the Lincoln Brewster Concert on July 9 2010 in NH. I'll be opening up for him and then I'll be at the workshop with him. Maybe we will jam!! It'll be a honor!
I don't know where you got that info from but that's cool news actually. If you're into modelling (although Axe-Fx is far from just modelling) the Axe is the best way to go right now.
I'm fortunate to have it incorporated into my rack/amp rig, best of both worlds.
Linc, though I doubt you check these very often, how are you running two line out cables to the amp? Are you using a "Y" adapter closer to the amp input? Also, just one direct out to the board? Does that produce stereo or not? Let me know if you ever get the chance. Thanks and God bless you!
@BILLYRAYBREWSTER He's actually running an XLR cable to the board and a 1/4" cable to the amp. There are two XLR and two 1/4" outputs on the back. All are mono. For stereo, he would need to run two XLRs to the board... so apparently, according to this video where there is only one XLR cable, he's not worried about stereo.
He is running a normal cable into the front of the amp, and an XLR cable to the Desk. You can run two XLRs to the desk if you wanna use stereo effects and stuff!
@BILLYRAYBREWSTER he is only using one cable out for the vox amp if you notice right, he mentioned to use both if he is monitoring with a couple of half stacks, and the XLR output , if you are not paning, with one cable out, in the MONO jack you are ready to go.
Whoa, I thought you got all your from Nigel from Spinal Tap. Just kidding. I go to a GREAT church in Borger, Texas. We do as many of your songs as the music director will let us do.
Yea! I just found out he got a hold of an Ultra recently and is using that now. Now I really want to see him live again. I was wondering when he'd get an Ultra with running direct being his preference. I also no longer see him on the Line 6 artist list.
i think he uses 9 gauge cause his strats have three trem springs. 10 gauge strings usually need four springs. and i have no idea what kind of strings he uses.. probably ernie balls
I have .105 strings on mine with 2 springs, works perfectly. I find that the number/tension of the springs has more to do with how you want the feel of the trem and not so much your string gauge.
judging by his bends, i think he uses 9 gauge strings. if u look at the back of his strats on this video, u will see 3 trem block springs. 3 springs are normally used on 9 gauge setups. i dont know what kind of strings he uses.. possibly ernie ball?
im pretty sure he uses 9 gauge strings cause his strats only have three trem springs. 10 gauge strings usually have four. i would guess that he uses ernie ball strings but i have no idea
Hi Lincoln its great seeing you use a POD X3 in live situations with great results. I´m a POD freak also (mine is still an XT Live). Once you run one output direct to PA and the other goes to the amp´s input how do you adjust the POD´s output setting? I mean, there´s a button on the XT Live that I should adjust anytime I plug it direct or in a amp´s preamp. Many thanks!
First I was shocked... then I thought "well, these pods sound pretty realistic and if you use in a loud and live situation, with massive pa's, in the middle of the mix, how many folks in the audience could tell that's not a real amp? And you use a Vox for stage volume... that's for pleasure only? I mean, you could have the pa sound back to you onstage.
If you watch in concert, He sometimes takes the in ear out for solos. (He covers that in the instructional)
I've been experimenting with what he does for a live rig. I play through an orange AD30 on the stage, while having the POD DI into the mix. It's really nice to be able to hear yourself when you need to. Also, on his POD, he uses a setting where the master volume ONLY controls the volume to the amp, not the mix. The mix volume is always consistent, and he can only play with stage volume.
Hey, Lincoln. Have you tried out Fractal Audio's "Axe-Fx" yet for amp/effects modelling? It's an amazing amp modeller and far better than the X3, IMO. Just wondering if you had heard of it or tried one.
I don't have a X3 so I don't think I can download the patches but I do have a Spider III. Does anyone know where he set's the knobs on his so I could get an equivalent or close to it sound.
Wow, only a POD. I used to play the Pod stuff live myself, and the sound, flexibility and ease to access presets did make life nice. I have turned to all tube and analog setups now (like I played back in the day), but seeing LB play live using the Pod only makes me wonder if I am being to much of a tone seeker. I can tell blindfolded digital vs analog playing, and feel the absense of real effects and amps in their behavior, but that was a POD 2.0. Thanks Lincoln! Today is the Day (I try an X3)
i thought you used some boss pedals...i personally am rather leery of plugging a multi-effects board into the PA, but you prove that great tone is dependent on the player.
yea ive got a pod xt live...man that thing is fun to mess around with, i get some pretty sweet tones outta that. ive just got a standard strat too...i go thru the xt live to a fender dsp 160...love it. love playing brewster to, not that i can play as well as he can=]
Pretty much anything will sound good through those P.A. EAW speakers. I bought the X3 and it's pretty decent, but it will never sound better than good old tubes. Most of the audience can't tell the difference anyways. I've seen LB live and his tone is awesome, he was using the XT live at the time.
Have always felt that guitar playing is ALL in the fingers and player, not the gear, and a good guitarist can play on an acoustic or an electric clean without a lot of gizmos as easily as they can with the gizmos. I think his video proves that out.
wow, i never would've thought that.. like at all. that's crazy. i've used multieffects units and amp modeling stuff before, but i just don't have the patience to sit there and try to figure everything out. i'm stickin to pedals, but that's a great tone.
i have the podx3, and i can't say enough good things about it. usb recording is easy as can be, it has dual rig setups, so i can run both electric and piezo from my Ernie Ball Music Man JP Signature guitar through separate processors simultaneously, multiple inputs and outputs, more effects than you can shake a stick at... it's great, and gets unbelievable tone. but it does help to be good at guitar...
If you are a great guitar player like him then you can make anything sound just great.
If you guys who think there's some amp behind the scenes because YOU can't make a great piece of gear like the X3 sound that good, then stop blaming the gear guys because you have no talent.
You just plug your pedals into the POD just like it was an amp. Plug your guitar into your pedals then right into the input of the POD. Just run the POD then right out to the mixing board. No mikes needed! I have a zillion L6 products and they rule.
So much of a quality guitar player comes from his ability to message the strings in just the right way...God has bless this brother..I have used the pod in the past, and dont remember ever getting tones like that...I would buy a pod again Lincoln if I could get those patches..God bless
On his website he gives a download link for the tones for both POD XT live, and POD X3 Live, I have just downloaded it myself. He is definitely very gifted!!
i have downloaded the x3 live brewster patch but the gearbox files dont reconize the file. what am i doing wrong? also im just hooking the pod x3 live by usb, do i need anything else to add the patches to my bank?
he says that he only uses the pod x3...i still don't believe him. he probably has some guy back stage with some other toys that he'll never tell us about. either that or he has magic fingers
Yeah he has magic fingers... cause all I saw this past weekend was an X3 a wirless thingy and smokin fingers... I think his Virtual vintage pickups help out a little also. But definitely magic fingers.. yeah...definitely
For real, it's just the POD X3. He used to just use the PODxt Live through a Radial JDI straight to the PA before Line6 brought out the X3. 90% of tone is in your fingers. He told me that he thinks of the the POD like it's an amp and builds his tone from the bottom up. Starts with an amp model that he likes (in his case, the Plexi Variac) bypasses all effects and starts tweaking the knobs until he gets a good amp setting that works with HIS guitar, then adds in other effects as needed.
I've only come across Lincoln recently. From listening to alot of of lead solos he seems to be using a fender tweed of some sort, maybe a bassman cranked up. And i think definately a compressor in there.
fender bassman used for some recording he said a while back... but he gets that out of his pod now. but picks carry A LOT of that tone... phat tone... its great to finally here a great guitarist show us styles and exact rig.... its not that expensive... im looking at a similar set up for... 500 bucks.. pick ups plus pod... im going for the xt live.. cause its cheaper... :D
Lincoln, I also have to thank and praise God for not taking guitar away from me but instead inspiring me to play and to try to improve my modest gift. All glory to God. But, modesty aside Mr. Brewster, there's none like you either! Please consider coming to the Bay Area for some appearances. I've been trying to see you play for a while now and haven't been able to. There are many musician friends I'd love to share that experience with, please come to San Jose!
Licoln, you da man. Thanks for taking the time to let look under the hood bro! I gotta say it is so nice to have a Godly, Worship-minded guitarist who will actually shred once in a while. God deserves the glory from every sound of every instrument. Especially Distorted 57 strats! Please come back to Kansas City...
Lincoln, Thanks so much for sharing about your rig. You've been a huge influence for a lot of worship leaders. The Electric guitar in worship is awesome. And I'm freaking out about the Pod X3 live. And I'm going to check out the Dimarzo pickups. Hope you are planning on coming to Kansas City soon. God bless man
It's a Chiquita Travel Guitar. I believe Eddie Van Halen recorded "Little Guitars" with one (but I think he played a different little guitar at the concerts). It looks sort of big on Michael J. Fox, but that's because he's tiny.
Thanks for posting this vid, it was awesome. I am glad to see your gear is relatively simple, no truckloads of rack gear like many pros use these days. I play an American Deluxe through a Fender Deville tube amp, and am always messin' with my gear trying to get a better tone. I finally eliminated 90% of my gear and went with a Boss multi effects unit. The sound is great and best of all it is easy to set up!
hey lincoln your awsome man your an inspiration man i cant wait to get you patches from your site are you putting up you whole POD X3 LIVE BUNDLE??? let me know!!!
so when are you sharing your patches with us pod users buddy? and how about some guitar tips & tricks/tutorials for us aspiring and budding guitar players/worshippers?
I bought all your cd's and have seen you play/lead worship, and i'm still "amazed" by God's gifts through you. really inspires me personally to dig deep into the bowels of my inner self to find that real place of "worship". thanks mr. brewster!

What is the guitar that Marty McFly is playing in the clip? I think I thought it was cool in the 80s when I saw the movie, now it just looks UGLY!!!

Love your guitars!
Peace.

Awesome! Great info on the setup for the start regarding tone... Makes total sense, no idea why I've not thought of that before.

so when are you sharing your patches with us pod users buddy? and how about some guitar tips & tricks/tutorials for us aspiring and budding guitar players/worshippers?
I bought all your cd's and have seen you play/lead worship, and i'm still "amazed" by God's gifts through you. really inspires me personally to dig deep into the bowels of my inner self to find that real place of "worship". thanks mr. brewster!
