  • Patricia and Edmund are killin' this track without over-singing and the harmonies blend perfectly. So Beautiful.

  • I love all of The Sylvers!!!! I had a healthy crush on the late Edmund. Peace to you all.

    Charlene in VA .......hugs

  • Hindsight being 20/20 and all that, THIS should have been the lead single from "Something Special." It's got that youthful feel, while at the same time showcasing a maturity in their writing and performing that would have removed the bubble gum label. If only a DJ somewhere had turned "Hot Line" over and played this.

  • The "B" side to Hotline 45 single, played it till I wore it out.

    Thanks for the post.

  • @jesprince77 You're welcome. And thanks for commenting.

  • TRUE...MY BAD...MEDIAN AND PHONTE RAP ON IT...

  • TRUE...MY BAD...POOH AND PHONTE RAP ON IT...

  • 9th wonder...LB "all that you are".....wow

  • @tedeames actuall it is the foreign exchange - all that you are....the beat was produced by nicolay...he and 9th have similar production styles

  • This is all too dreamy.....their hamonies are so heavenly....

  • This is my all time favorite Sylvers song

  • Wow, I'm gonna have to get all my wax updated! I love these songs! They never get old!

  • Totally in love with this song! This group has a great harmonic sound!

  • There is no originality in music today. Once upon a time, the music industry set a high standard, attracting, the most gifted and musically talented.

  • @TheReneex you're right why do you think everybody's sampling music like this everyday

  • why cant music sound like this anymore?I say we start creating our own stations, labels, bring the music back to the hearts, souls & minds of the people....

  • I wore this album out back in the day! It's wonderful that younger generations know what we oldheads already knew about this group. :)

  • Whoever that Drake made the song Foreign Exchange did definitely doesn't know their hip hop. It's Foreign Exchange song called All You Are.

  • GREAT SONG!!!! Needs to be rerelease The Sylvers can do a Greatest Hits Tour ...People will come to see them....Believe me!!!!!!

  • I'm damaging the replay button, haha.

And I can understand why the hook in this song was sampled so much, it's SO catchy!

  • Drake got it from The Foreign Exchange. Foreign Exchang got it from The Sylvers.

  • i like this song.....tru harmonies...but to me....i think this was a song that olympia could of took lead on...it just seem like this was her song....

  • awesome! Foreign Exchange did also their best!

  • FOREIGN EXCHANGE!

  • Just realized the Foreign Exchange sampled this on "Come Around". The Sylvers' harmonies were sick

  • @teegreazy --Actually its "All That you are" from The Foreign Exchange.

  • @BrothaDarrrknesss True... my mistake

  • This is one The Sylvers finest.

  • Which one is Olympia?

  • @CoverGirl084 Olympia is the beautiful sister with the fullest hair to the left in the photo as the video begins next to James the first brother on the left where they are in white or light blue, God bless Olympia she was unrecognizable in Unsung but as we saw endured a horrific incident so sad

  • @nuthinbutclassics She still has the same smile though.

  • @CoverGirl084 Olympia has a criss cross neckline front of dress in the photo I describe.

  • all the girls were fine as hell :)

  • THANKS UNSUNG :)

  • lovin olympia in theis pic!!!!!!!!!

  • which girl is singing the loyalty part?

  • @kolense Patricia is singing the entire hook. "Patience, Understanding, Loyalty!"

  • Im a 28 year old male and I never heard of The Sylvers until yesterday on Unsung, Now I really agree that they were a lively group with amazing harmony that been slept on , I am now an addict of The Sylvers.

  • They were SOOO slept on....#thatisall

  • I am sooooo THANKFUL to TVone for the "Unsung" series. As much as I love watching the history of these great artist, it always makes me sad when I learn how these groups were taken advantage of by the record companies. - Bitter/Sweet memories!

  • Wow Unsung interview was EXPLOSIVE, I never knew what Olympia was going through. I had no clue Ricky & Foster were in prison for parole violations. I am glad they're getting it together. But I must say they sound good still. Angie was always my favorite. I didn't expect so much weight gain tho LOL, but I was glad to see them, and they all looked good. I must say I had the whole Leon situation mixed up, the group actually voted him out and got screwed in the end over a record contract SMDH

  • @masculine31

TV One is doing an awesome job on the Unsung series. I enjoyed seeing the Sylvers. They were one of my favorite groups. I always wondered what happened to them. Now we all know thanks to Unsung.

  • @MIMI88998899 I totally enjoyed it too, 1985 the LP was NOT marketed at all, now we know why. TV1 should've given them 2hrs tho...Edmund got no love, and the newer generation of Sylvers were not introduced. I just loved them so much, always went off when someone said the Jackson's were better. I was one of the youngest fans in the 70's LOL, I am glad that someone finally heard our cries for this show. I emailed Unsung last year about this...

  • @masculine31 Blood is thicker than water. They went against their brother and with the White Manager who screwed them with no vaseline.

  • @palmares77 Well they were young bro! They were trying it their way, and didn't realize how talented Leon was LOL! That brother is BAD, I've seen the talent he produced. Granted every song he wrote wasn't gonna be a hit, but hey, if I'm rolling dice, my bet is on Leon every time...

  • @palmares77 Hell yeah! I don't know if you were quoting Ice Cube intentionally, but that's exactly what happened to The Sylvers and NWA.

  • @masculine31 yea angie was hot back then she lost it she did say she turn to booze so proberly cause her weight gain.

  • @bradjackson5 That and 4 kids will do it every time. LOL She still cute tho. Man those girls were hot at one time, the mother kept it together, but they didn't LOL

  • @bradjackson5 LOL she still looks good, just needs to lose weight. Women have kids and its hard fro them to maintain a healthy weight. Hopefully she'll get it together tho.

  • OMG HOW DID I NOT KNOW ABOUT THEM....THANKS DRAKE

  • I remember this song, it was on the back of the Hotline single. Frankly, it was more popular than Hotline.

  • Be sure to check out the Sylvers UNSUNG ep, on August 1st, 2011 on TVOne. 10PM on the East Coast...so probably 7PM on the West Coast.

  • I am 38yr old and sadly had never heard of The Slyvers until several weeks ago. Now I am like an addict to their music. It is really sad at how they got swept under the rug some kind of way by the corporate record machine. They never were mainstreamed for the world to enjoy. As far as Black Family groups, the greedy ass record machine put ALL their money behind the Jacksons(Whom I love) but THE SLYVERS GOT JERKED FOR REAL!

  • @palmares77

What record machines are you talking about? The Sylvers were never at the same record companies with the Jacksons. Thank God for Joe Jackson because he is behind the success of the Jacksons as well as the whole entire Jackson family. That man gets a lot of flack, but looking at UnSung about the Sylvers, now I see why he was protrayed as the greedy father by recored executives and outsiders. The Sylvers didn't have that protection from a protective father. They got screwed big time.

  • @marellamofo

nd i think thats why no one really remembers them... wich is sad cuz they are sooo good.

  • @palmares77 Wow, really? I'll be 38 in a couple of months...and the Sylvers was a VIVID part of my childhood. I've always FLURVED them.

  • @palmares77 Same here! Since watcing them on unsung I just been digging for more. The difference between them and J5 is that The Sylvers had better harmony arrangements, plus Leon was the man behind it mostly.

  • @TheBarnes1981 Much better Harmony!

  • @palmares77 hooked too

  • @palmares77 You are a tad bit young to have really been tuned in to their heyday. They were the bomb for a minute. REALLY

  • @TRACEWORLD2 They REALLY were.

  • @MsTexas73 how many kids did olympia have?

  • @kolense Hi. Olympia has two children. Tyava (who sang Edmund's leads on Forever Yours at the end of the Unsung ep) and Michael.

  • Drake sample? You mean Foreign Exchange sample haha

  • I remember when I was in the 3rd grade...we could bring a record for the teacher to play on Fridays. IAnd I bought this it was on the back of something more popular & my classmates didn't know it & didn't want to hear it. It really has taken me back! Can't wait to see them on Unsung!!!

  • @kaydeebee0926 This was the b-side to "Hotline"

  • @kaydeebee0926 Wow....I used to bring this same 45 to class, in the 3rd grade because it was my first and only record that I owned! The hit side was "Hotline" and this was the B side. I was in love with this record and would play it over and over and over and over. As a matter of fact, I STILL own it,red...with my name written in cursive on it. Great memories....

  • This was on the Horizons LP LOL I miss this

  • @masculine31 Hi...this song is on the Something Special lp. New Horizons is the album after this one.

  • @MsTexas73 U right LOL...I had *Another day to love* on my brain..LOL

  • This might be a silly question, but can anyone tell me what the name is of that subtle, chiming instrument that is heard around 2:28? I hear it in a lot of musical compositions from the 70s era and I like the way it sounds, it can also be heard in many of Pharaoh Sanders' pieces.

  • @AleekahTV That's they Cymbal...the drummer is hitting the middle part to make that tighter sound on it. Now on Pharoah Sander's stuff...sometimes his percussionist (not to be confused with the drummer) could be using other instruments...like more African type instruments.

  • @MsTexas73 Okay, yes I figured it was some sort of African percussion. I'll need to do some research and find out the name of it. Thanks.

  • @MsTexas73, I was listening to David Banner and 9th Wonder song called Strange! And I said, man this song have a great message and smooth mellow beat! I said who inspired them to make that song, then I heard the song from which they sample by The Sylvers called Cry of A Dreamer! I said to myself this have to be the best message song, smoothest beat, and smoothest harmonies I ever heard a teenage band do! One of the Top 10 song produce by a teenage band ever! Along with J5, Debarge, and Switch!

  • @MsTexas73, at the time when the Jackson 5 was out, there label did not promote them as playing instruments, thats what my sister told me! That why why put them in the same situation as DeBarge because #1) Also members of Debarge played instruments, but Motown never promoted that and #2) Their harmonies sound more like DeBarge than the Jackson 5 and because of the two female singers! I grew up on DeBarge, my big sister grew up on The Sylvers and Jackson 5! All these bands did great music!

  • @etyvnio There were four female singers in the group total, then Charmaine, and Olympia left (Charmaine returned for last album though). While you didn't see them on their album covers with their instruments, you saw them in concert and on television with them. See Soul Train ep with them singing Freestyle. See music video for "Just When I Thought it Was Over" and "Come Back Lover Come Back".

  • @etyvnio Yes all the bands were great...but Motown just seem to put more effort behing marketing the J5 and DeBarge than ANY of the Sylvers record companies. I think of all of the record companies, they should've stayed with Solar.

  • @MrDjRenagade, some people compare them to the Jackson 5, because they was out at the same time! But those same people got to realize that the Jackson 5 was a band not a group! The Sylvers are an early version of DeBarge! But the Sylvers had a message compare to DeBarge love songs! Good, to know a young person that know good music when they hear it!

  • @etyvnio Actually, they Sylvers could also be considered a band. Many members also played instruments.

  • @etyvnio Byw I DO agree that one thing that definitely made them stand out was the "Message" in their music. but also their SOUND. There was no young group out quite like them in the sound department...not even DeBarge. the Sylvers were the 2nd gen. of the 5th Diimension IMHO.

  • @777rosalyn So am I!

  • so in love with foster sylver

  • Foreign Exchange!!!!!!!! xD

  • Their harmony was so pure and crisp!!!

  • Comment removed

  • These guys, in my opinion are better than The Jackson 5......but im only @7 years old so what do I kno right?!?!?!? Lol good music is good music right?? Love it

  • Got this album as a Christmas gift when I was a kid. This song made me pay attention to the vocal harmony which was a Sylvers trademark.

  • sampled by Sabzi for Blue Scholars' Loyalty

  • @KICKBUTTmooTwenT2

    ...love that Blue scholars joint!!

  • One great big, beautiful, talented family

  • this album is in my subconscence! lol

    much loved

  • Boy was this my song back in the day, thanks for the vid

  • Quite Nyce and Radar Ellis sampled this on Love Is. beautiful song

  • THAT is the album one of my uncle, in his younger 1970s heyday, has that I remember vividly.

  • All that you are by Foreign Exchange samples this... which I think is where Drake took the beat from on the mixtape.

  • Comment removed

  • Blue Scholars sample > Drake sample.

    IMO

    The original is amazing too.

  • YOU HAVE A PAIR OF THE GREATEST PRODUCERS EVER COME FROM THIS FAMILY. CLASSIC SONG WELL WRITTEN

  • @konohasElite its called drums, piano, and guitar...its pretty good

  • @5thElementArts : )

  • Drake sampled this song

  • @BlackNinjaWarrior10 no, Foreign Exchange samples this song...so did i

  • @5thElementArts Drake used this song 2 but it was off one of his old mixtapes

  • @5thElementArts Drake - Get Over it

  • Comment removed

  • @BlackNinjaWarrior10 actually Charles Hamilton sampled the song since he made the original beat

  • @5thElementArts oh Charles Hamilton made the original

  • y'all should look up dis song called "all that you are" by the foreign exchange. dis song was sampled in it

  • how are you doing MsTexas73?....thanks for sharing another hit with us

  • @abcdefghjklmnrst Hey! I'm doing well. How are you? And you're very welcome.

  • @MsTexas73 i'm good....just trying to stay above water

  • what are the names of the sisters from left to right while in the blue dresses

  • @katie22233 Hi! From left to right: Olympia, Angelia, and Patricia. Charmaine had already left the group by this time.

  • love this jam.

  • WHAT A BREAKDOWN A SONG FOR ALL AGES

  • Man..I was 5 & knew this whole song...it was on the 'B" side of Hotline....on my 45....lol...I remember 76 like it was yesterday...lol

  • Where my Afro pik

  • patience.... understanding............loyalty

  • @pooky1105 three very important words in a relationship which no longer exsist old or new the main word they forgot is trust

  • @awsullyful I disagree. If you are in the RIGHT kind of relationship, you DO have patience, understanding, and loyalty. Trust comes with those three main ingredients. If you are in a relationship that's "complicated"...it's time for a serious re-evaluation of what you want and need in a relationship. If it's not there, you work on getting it or you leave that person alone.

  • foriegn exchange killed this sample...OMG!

  • @BryceLane7 real talk. all that you are is one of my favorite tracks.

  • This style of music is uncanny. Foster should've made a remix of this song called "That's what music is made of"

  • @PoppMonster. Wow.. that's a shame that Jermaine did that to Edmund. Even though I am a Jackson's fan, Jermaine aint nothing but a Hater. You see all the stuff he said about Micheal in the past.. even had nerve to put out a record called " A Word To The Bad" talking bout Mike. That's why he hasn't had any GIANT sucess with his Solo Career.. only some. GOD DONT LIKE UGLY.. and He sho aint crazy bout pretty either. LOL

  • I had ALL their albums. RIP Edmund Sylvers.

  • @DatGirlG Aww what happened to your albums? Some of them are quite costly to get a hold of now.

  • @MsTexas When I went away to college, ( away from home) my parents passed away, and my brother threw or gave away ALL my Albums. I still have a large cassette tape collection which I took with me. I even had 8 track tapes! LOL Thank God for YOUTUBE

  • @DatGirlG Oh I'm so sorry. "about your parents AND the albums." Yes You tube really is a good thing.

  • @MsTexas73 Thank U. L )

  • @DatGirlG Edmund used to work with my brother at Richfood, he was a really nice guy too

he told us about how he was working on some stuff but Jermaine Jackson was baller blocking him and he quit the music business because of that

  • From the Something special lp. I remember joining the sylvers fan club. Got this album as a Christmas gift. This song and the song "got to have you for my very own" were the standout tracks.

  • @eric2181965

I got this album for Christmas, too! Played it to death! LOL!

  • Simply beautiful

  • sample time !!!!!

  • one of the truest songs about love there is

  • I love this song so much. I wish I knew who lifted my "Something Special" lp. Thank you for posting this. It helps ease the pain. :)

  • You're Welcome. Glad you're enjoying it. ☺

  • blue scholars loyalty :)

  • I love this song, drake also sampled it I think, and I love the foreign exchange too!

  • y'all should look up dis song called "all that you are" by the foreign exchange, dis song waz sampled in it.

  • wow scholars took a sample from this song?

  • As we know, the Jackson 5 got most of the attention back in the day. To me, the Sylvers should have gotten the same exposure like them, plus they made great music like this. I grew up on them, and had huge crushes on all the sisters!! lol But slow jams like this one are hard to find today, and I wish it would come back to songs like this instead of hearing about the same things over and over again. I'm downloading this and others to cd as we speak. Much love to MsTexas73 for uploading this!!

  • Hi!...thanks so much for your post.

And right you are about music today. We don't have LOVE songs anymore...just sex songs.

  • Hi, Ms Texas!! Thanks for the reply tonight. Just thinkin' on the Sylvers music while I was downloading. I see that you too have an appreciation for the real music like the Sylvers to my band Mint Condition. It's a shame where music is in a box nowadays, and they're worried about sales more than the quality of the music. DJs like myself want the good stuff for those who do listen. May need some help in the future on some of the Sylvers best besides the ones I know. Once again, much love.

  • Hi...you are very welcome. And I'm sure my Sylvers buddies and I can help you out...we roll in droves. *grin*

  • Good evening, MsTexas73 if you're in the youtube universe. Just read your message and thank you for the reply. So help a fellow music lover out with some more of The Sylvers slow jams if you and the buddies don't mind. Yours in music, Masteratworkable a.k.a. DJ C-Smooth---

  • Good Evening...

I will try to get something up over my vacation.

  • say that AGAIN!!!!

  • MsTexas73, do you think msylvers is Pat ? Oh, and I see you evrywhere (on Sylvers pages); thanks for the music !!

  • Hey! I'm not sure, but I don't think so. I'll have to ask around. It could be one of their kids. In fact I think Pat goes under her married name on here.

  • @4687878 Might be Marvis..>Foster's wife.

  • RIp DiLLA for bringin this joint to me, well actually black milk got me into the sylvers, big up

  • classic cut sounds like 1st day of spring..just beautiful

  • The b-side to the very first 45rpm I ever bought. I probably played this song about as much as I did it's A-side "Hot Line".

  • U know!

  • @honeycone71 I bet once word got aorund how aweomse this b side joint was...THAT is what helped to boost the sales of Hotline as a single since it wa the A side.

  • @MsTexas73

I can remember how popular Freestyle was in 76, It was the b side to Boogie Fever and just popular as the a side

  • @shyphyre Did they eventually release it as a single? See to me...If I were an exec for a record co. and saw that certain B sides were making noise..>I'd release them as A sides and back them with other album cuts. That should have happend with the Sylvers AND 5th Dimension and didn't. What a shame.

  • @MsTexas73

No, Freestyle was not released as single.

And you are right. It would have been a hit. I can only speculate that Capitol Records ignored freestyle because Boogie Fever was still a big hit and Hotline was first single from the Sylvers next album

  • Comment removed

  • WOW.....You took me back. I used to have the LP on repeat at night....I thought the lyrics were "passion, understanding, blow your T. "

  • @IamSheLock I don't mean to laugh at you but I thought your comment about the lyrics is really funny. Edmund is saying, "loyalty." I have this on vinyl and that's how I know. What's funny is when your young and hear some lyrics of songs, you think its one thing. Then we grow up and find its something else. I thought this only happens to me (lol)!

  • @renkar820 Hey...that's Pat singing the hook "Patience, Understanding, Loyalty." Edmund sings the verses.

  • I SWEAR this the sample fot Loyalty by Blue Scholars

If you haven't heard it, peep it, The beat is REDICULOUS!!!!

  • YES THEY JACKED THE BEAT!!!

  • Yep, dope shit.

  • @LuigiBoVer2 Yes i kno i kno lol

they blue scholars gott it in loyalty

  • I would just rather you not debate about it on my page...things tend to get out of hand and I want my pages to remain peaceful...let's just enjoy this music that should be out on cd but isn't.

It's fine to refer to the samples but I just dont' want debates.

  • Let's keep the debates about rappers OFF my channel please...thank you.

  • What you said about drake being better than phonte

  • hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

  • Champion upload!

  • Thanks...I'll be uploading a couple of other Sylvers joints soon!

  • Comment removed

  • You're welcome.

Thanks for posting about THIS song.
