Gamehelper. I installed a 160GB hdd yesterday. When the system came up it didn't ask to format HDD it said it needed System update file. I downloaded from Sony and put it on a disk and updated system. System came up fine but after hours of doing a retore I notice the PS3 still thinking it has an 80Gig HDD installed and Not allowing me to install more games cause it's out of space. Any Ideas?

then to format go to format utility and press format hard disk

to copy ur things back go to backup utility again and press restore. search it on youtube there are some good explanations

@o0th3Jok3R0o He says that in the vid, no? ATA serial, 2,5 inch, preferably 5400 rpm (cheaper, 7200 gives just really a small boost of 0,5 - 1,5 less sec. of loading times. If you want an exact model, mine is: WESTERN DIGITAL 2.5" Scorpio AV 320GB 32MB cache. Hope it helped.

It doesn't matter about a 1TB or a 2TB. At the moment you can only put up to a 750GB in a PS3. Anything lager is 12.5mm high the PS3 will only accept 9.5mm.

Who cares? Do what I did and get a 500GB drive for your PS3. I didn't get an SSD so make sure it's SSD. If you want to invest more, then get a 2TB SSD. That will last you for years.

THERE AINT 2TB 2.5INCH SATA DISCS, THERE IS A 1TB HARD DISC THATS 12,5mm thats 2 high, it can take up to 9.5mm high(750gb)(2.5inch sata disc) NO NOT 3.5inch they do exist in 2tb. ANYWAYS HE WAS TALKIN ABOUT SSD THe biggest ssd is 512gb(well there are 1tb but those are 2 expensive, around 6 ps3's)

I did the same thing. however, upon installation, a message appeared on the screen after I turned on the power that asked me to connect the controller to the console. And then it said I needed to download a system data file.

I went to the ps3 website and downloaded the updated 3.5 firmware, upload that onto my new drive and it still wouldn't work. Any help is appreciated. thanks.

I don't think that Backwards Compatibility has anything to do with the HDD... It's the different hardware of the release 60Gb PS3 that makes that happen a piece of hardware later versions never got. The HDD is an entirely different piece of Hardware.

Everything, And even though store bought stuff can usually only be installed on up to 5 machines, it's won't take a charge cause your PS3 Serial number and Mac adress stays the same so it doens't count as a 2nd machine!

It will back-up everything on your HDD so if you wanna upgrade a full 250Gb HDD you'll need a external USB Hard disk to put it all on.

As for thropies just make sure you got 'em updated by opening either Thropies or your player ID, as soon as you log into your PSN account again and open thropies or ID again it will be updated with all that you had before to changed the HDD's.

The limit is as big as you can get but lets say you get a 320Gb like i did. After it's formated and the firmware is installed, if you go to system settings and check how much you Gb you got out of a 320Gb HDD it'll give you the message that you got 297Gb so you'll loose a bit of space on you partition and space thats reserved for later updates and such.

You don't need to back-up if you don't want to (or wanna start all over) but then you need to download the latest system software from the official PS3 website i think it's 3.15 (at the moment of this post) and put it on a FAT32 formated USB stick and once you boot up the console (with the new blank HDD) he'll ask for it and then the format and firmware install will start. After that you'll have to go through the setup again like when you first booted it up (Sound, HDmi, WiFi and so forth).

I think they both use 2.5" Laptop Hard Disks, so yes it should be possible. But Slims have a way bigger HDD so it would be better to Back-up your data on a flash drive using the Utility under "System Settings" and then use it again on your Slim to place the Backed-up data on that HDD. That way you keep the bigger HDD from the Slim and all your data.
