I know Wilde's pièce and Strauss's opera based on it and I like very much both works. That's why Russell's interpretation, and especially the use of the playful music by Grieg instead of the dramatic score from Strauss's Salome disturbs me. For the rest I agree with monakw
@mirella1935 I must beg to differ, this production of Salome is innovative, particularly with respect to art, culture, and politics with whimsical hilarious asides alluding to the infamous author Oscar Wilde who wrote his own version .I particularly enjoy Russel's use of Satie's Gymnopédies as soundtrack when Herod is asking Salome, pleading to her as to what she wants..it sets the perfect tone for his befuddled desperation.I recommend reading Wilde's version to anyone interested in Salome
The music playing is Grieg's "In The Hall of the Mountain King" very odd choice. Why didn't Ken Russell, well known as a fan of opera & classical music, choose instead the "Dance of the Seven Veils" as played in the Richard Strauss opera Salome ?
@Adebar3 This movie is awful; it's not Russell's best work; The Devils and Mahler are his best, and also The Music Lovers (about Tchaikovsky); but I find this movie a stupid, vulgar farce. And also Strauss' Salome opera "dance of the 7 veils" would be in public domain since Strauss is considered a classical music/opera composer and that was over 100 yrs ago that he made that music
@TheAmericanEvita The movie is excellent. It reveals the play behind the play. And includes autobiographical notes and hidden in-jokes covering a vast amount of Wilde's work.
@brutusbassoon1.I dunno 2. SAL like sally, O then ME like you and me or some say MAY like the month...you say potato I say poe tot toe Let's call the whole thing OFF :) 3. Read Oscar Wilde's version..and you will begin to understand more...it really is a MUST READ. It is an interpetation of a biblical myth.As an aside Artist Aubrey Beardsley illustrated Wilde's version in 1907 for a London publication called the SAVOY.Some of the costumes in THIS play are a reflection of Beardsley's work

I agree that this work is not the best of Russel's - and the choice of the music is ridiculous

@TheAmericanEvita As far as I know they had to take Music that was already public Domain because of the small Budget.
