Whale research is important. Recent population growth, abnormal weather and diastrophism may cause food shortage in the future. It is not wise to depend only on livestock industry or fish farming for meat or fish. Whale meat can be important food. Further, if there is no whaling, a number of the whales will grow too large and they will eat too much fish which will decrease it considerably.

It is not wise to depend only on livestock industry or fish farming for meat or fish. Whale meat can be important food. Further, if there is no whaling, a number of the whales will grow too large and they will eat too much fish which will decrease it considerably.

Whale meat is a delicacy. The japanese are NOT doing this for survival.
Whale meat sells for $64. per pound. So one Minke of 6 tons would make the whalers $768,000...
unless the meat is discovered to have high levels of mercury in it, then the heroes of Japan generously donate those batches to schools, to serve as lunches because they can't sell it.
The batches they do keep (and don't get SOLD) go bad in a warehouse and get dumped. Then they go out hunting for re-stock

@info145 FACT: Commercial whaling was NOT banned. There was a MORATORIUM in 1986, meant to be reviewed in the 1990s. It isn’t illegal to hunt whales commercially. It’s only against IWC rules. A country can leave the IWC and resume commercial whaling legally. Like Iceland did.

The Japanese should be ashamed of these whalers and fishing nets bringing in blue fin tuna. There is no honor in destroying the worlds natural resources just to put a meal on a plate. Instead the world should use it's technology to develop an efficient method of fish farming on land or sea. We have several successful farms here in the U.S. that farm Shrimp, Lobster, Tilapia, Trout and a few other varieties on a massive scale. What's it going to take people?

If whales become extinct, plankton would not over populate the oceans. More would be available for those above them on the food chain. This would eventually equilibrate to increasing the supply of fish that humans normally consume.
