It actually is a fun little game, although you're right, it is rather generic. What turned me on to this game was the soundtrack of all things -- the BGM and the SFX in this game are quite good.
Otherwise, despite being well-polished and fun overall, it just seems a bit uninspired at times....
I'll eventually get around to doing a "real" review of this game. (One of these days...)

I think you might be confusing this game with Zero Wing. It was released on Arcade, Genesis, and the PC-Engine CD. I'm pretty sure W-Ring was a PC-Engine HuCard only.
Oh, and thanks for the compliment! This was my first LP, so I don't know how good it really is. I felt like I simply said the same few things over and over again during the LP. Oh well.
Okay I went through my ROM list in an emulator and found out Heavy Unit was the game I was thinking of. I tried out W-Ring too and played up to the level four boss and it's pretty decent! You were dead on when you described it being like a fast paced Gradius.

I often hear the Genesis verison is better, but I've never played it. Still would like to put more time into this game. I'll check out your LP.
