Brendan O' Brien kills bands and his sound sucks ass. I challenge you to find a band that became MORE famous after he started producing them. You won't. Pearl Jams sucked after this album, and this remix is depressing - especially because a few of you actually like it. The one exception in his career might be SuperUnknown which is uncharacteristic BOB, and I would argue succeeded in spite of his involvement. Still, SG died after he was involved with them.
Actually I really like this version a lot better than the original because the original Even Flow was just that , it was too smooth and over produced. But the second best version isnt this one or from TEN, instead its Pearl Jams 1992 Alive cd single for Even Flow ( The Japanese import version ) sounds way better , plus its the same version as the music video for Even Flow. Brendan O Brien did his best to capture the raw sound of Pearl Jam demo days with this version . Either way, its all good
I agree with what somebody else said, this mix is strictly for your Ipod. Which I think is a okay idea. I mean, the older versions of PJ's stuff sounds good but kinda doesn't fit when you try to download it to your new hardware. But otherwise, good song, great memories....:)
the remixes and the remastered version of the original 1991 mixes have had their Dynamic range destroyed.
If you don't believe me listen to the original album pressing and pay attention to how much quieter the overall volume is and the bigger punch in the drums.
I prefer the original sound of the album, this one almost feels like a demo tape. The guitars sound heavier just because they're louder and the voice is pushed far behind in the mix. The "overproduced" sound of the original version that some people seem to hate was more cohesive and smooth and fitted the songs better. I usually like raw sounding records, but Ten was kind of MEANT not to sound like this. Rawer isn't always better, as in this case.
@AFirmKickInThePants I totally agree with you. I don't like Brendan O' Brien mixes becouse they often sound like you said - loud guitar, too much bass. I also noticed that albums he had worked on sound very compressed - best examples are Core by Stone Temple Pilots, Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water by Limp Bizkit and especially Dogman by King's X. Generally when there's a lot of going on in the song (many loud instruments at one time), everything blends.
Man... i also remember liustening to the heavy riffs, bad ass drum lines and powerfull ass lyrics! I miss the powerfull lyrics Eddie. I hear this album and just wanna rock out with my childhood friends all night long!
damnit i love 1992 like none other!! 7th grade baby when this album came out. I was playing soccer in Middle School 1st time I heard this song and had to buy it, then I joined Columbia House and became poor. CD's rock!
What exactly is the difference between the original Ten that came out in 1991 and the remastered version (i.e CD-1 from the legacy album) ?? Which one sounds better ? I tried to listen to sample songs on amazon, but could not figure out the difference.
I am interested in the original songs from Ten, I do not really care about any remixed versions (i.e CD-2 from the legacy edition). which one should I buy, the original Ten or the legacy edition?
Legacy mixes are a lot rawer than the original versions, as the remixes have less reverb and effects. The original recordings are legendary, and the remixes are really good. I own both versions of Ten, and I'd say get the legacy edition, since it comes with the original mixes AND the remixes. Hope that helped.
My favorite radio station was going the play a leaked version of this before the cd was released, but their cd player broke and was forced to play the original version of "even flow".
Maybe your not from the Boston area but I swear to god - I have no religion, but what the heck - my favorite station WAAF did do that screw up. End of discussion.
Sounds way rawer than the original album, which is awesome. Some songs sound weird without the reverb and such (Black, Alive, etc) but overall the whole remix sounds awesome.

I love this version of Ten. Sure, it's not that different, but the great thing here is that now these old school Pearl jam songs don't sound so out of place on my iPod, they finally sound fresh and tight, like they were recorded yesterday.
Sure, it's not so much for a die hard Pearl Jam listener, but it's great for newcomers getting into the grunge sound, and for audiophiles like myself.
Really punchy, sounds awesome though. Compress the heck out of those frequencies and squash it like a modern FM radio station. I doubt he did much hands on work here, its like he just Pro Tooled most of it... Probably a 60 minute job. But...... I really like this!!!!
what brendan o' brien did was risky. that's why he was hesitant on remixing the record because of how Ten was accepted. he did great on the remixes. brendan o
hard to compare from computer speakers but it does sound more "Live ?" .. guitar parts more clearly defined and drums more tight sounding... obviously they would have mastered the new mix with new gear too, sounds slightly compressed ( as is everything these days )... fresh .!!. can't wait to hear rest.

i prefer this mix than the album version
the guitars are more pronounced, it's more clear, plus you can hear eddie asking for some spare change during the interlude (or breakdown)

Wow, it sounds incrementally better.
Dial back that reverb, compress the guitar and vocals.
This whole thing is unnecessary.

check out the end of Ten....it seems that O'Brien did some of the most obvious changes with Porch, Deep, and Garden, especially Porch.
But your still right, the first half of this album sounds a lot like the original.
