  • Beautiful and serene.

  • Very impressive. The descant in the last verse sounds wonderful and is musically brilliant. Hats off to whoever wrote it, and also to the choir who sang it so perfectly!

  • them buildings are well nice xo

  • Always been one of my favourites, a beautiful hymn, and the tune stirs the soul in its majesty

  • It seems that hibro missed out Guildford Cathedral.

  • This is a dirge but there is a better tune (Rest)

  • I am an ELCA Lutheran from South Carolina. I play the piano and organ. Today (July 10), I played this for Sunday School Assembly. However, it was to the tune, REST, composed by Frederick C. Maker, 1844-1927.

  • the atonement dunkirk scene brought me here. a beautiful hymn

  • This is such a gorgeous hymn...and beautifully sung here. Great organ accompaniment, too!

    Thanks.

  • lovely

  • Beautiful performance. Best I've heard of Parry's sublime music. Thank you. I have chosen this to be sung at my Father's funeral.

  • Just got serious goose-bumps listening to that descant. Glorious!! As I've posted before - nothing like a British Cathedral Choir or the Choirs from numerous schools and Universities (like Kings College, Cambridge) when you need a fix of heavenly choral music. Great Photos, too. Making my feet itch to head back over the pond.

  • lovely choir great hym

  • very nice and peaceful

    thank you for this upload

god bless you and the choir

  • Thank you for this posting of a most beautiful hymn tune, and for the photos of various cathedrals and abbeys in England. What a pleasure to see and hear! This hymn tune "Repton" is also found in the most recent hymnal of the Presbyterian Church in Canada titled "How clear is our vocation, Lord" words by Fred Pratt Green. Green's words are a wonderful addition to this outstanding tune.

  • Steve you will find this tune "Repton" in the Episcopal 1982 Hymnal

  • The Anglicans have the very best Hymns...HANDS DOWN! Here in the USA it is the Episcopal and, oddly the very liberal United Church of Christ that continues singing in the Anglican tradition. I sure would love to know where I could get my hands on this music for my church...along with descants. Thank you so much for sharing this beautiful music!

  • @UCCSteve Well I do agree with the Episcopal part but I'm at a loss to see how the UCC (Unitarians Contemplating Christ) with that dreadful New Century Hymnal continues anything resembling Anglican tradition.

  • I was a bus-conductor in the 1970s and sometimes used to stand on the platform and sing this wonderful hymn. The passengers loved it; some would even join in! All ended with one-man buses of course.... Thanks for posting this lovely rendition.

  • Uno degli inni più belli mai scritti (parole e musica). Meraviglioso il controcanto dei soprani nell'ultima strofa.

  • Many happy memories...................

  • boss can u please list the cathedrals and abbeys by their names...

  • @haibro Sure. Tewkwsbury Abbey, Salisbury, St Pauls, London, Wells, Peterborough, York Minster, Canterbury, St Albans, Norwich, Lichfield, Hereford, Gloucester, Worcester, Winchester, Lincoln and Tewkesbury again.

  • @drwestbury

That seems to leave out a lot of Church of England cathedrals - Ely, Bristol, Birmingham, Derby, Chesterfield, Salisbury immediately spring to mind. For a full list go to Wikipedia and type in "List of Cathedrals in the United Kingdom"

  • @drwestbury Your "York Minster" is Bristol Cathedral, and your "Lincoln" is York Minster :o)

  • @drwestbury I think the one you've listed as Lincoln is actually York Minster. Some top choices though!

  • Needed to hear this today ... miss my mom

  • My favourite hymn...proud to be an anglican worshipper :p

  • Beautiful video in sound and sight. It is surely an inspiring and uplifting source of

teaching material for many types of Cathedral and Parish choirs. At a time of

controversy and disputation, this video brings back a sense of being proud of

the mighty Houses of Prayer and the great choral tradition within Anglicanism.

  • I've just discovered these beautiful hymns. Thanks to dr westbury and tvnorth in particular, but to all the posters and to Youtube for making it possible. Just lovely.

  • I have just discovered your channel, drwestbury, and must tell you what a joy it is. Thank you! Dear Lord And Father Of Mankind is my absolute favourite hymn, too, and this rendition is very beautiful, right down to the last sonorous chord. Best wishes to you, Kal.

  • My most favourite hymn...very moving rendition and beautiful photos..thanks so much!

  • My music

  • nice pics of some of my favourite places to a very meaningful hymn. thanks 4 sharing

  • awesome! :O

  • I am so glad you posted this drwestbury!

I am with you davidmiler12 about the descant, never knew that it had one myself, absolutely inspiring.

I have said it before, music like this, ministers more to me than any "contemporary Christian pop band" or dare I say the pastors message.

I think if churches want more congregants, they should invest in supporting formation of sacred choirs and those who sing in them.

  • Always reminds me of my schooldays at Dame Alice Owens, Angel, Islington, London 1960-1966. My absolute favourite.

  • well i never knew there was a descent to this hymn but its bloody brilliant

  • I must really say thanks for all this beautiful music. This repertoire is wonderful, I live in Italy and here these Hymns are not part of the tradition ...

I am happy to know such a beautiful liturgical music and sung so wonderfully well, always!

THANKS from the bottom of my heart!

    Mary

  • @tritus67 it is very much an Anglican tradition, personally i believe the Anglican faith has produced some of the most inspiring hymns...

  • @Personified82 your all talking about anglican traditions this is a hymn we sing regulary at our christadelphian church in nantwich

  • Magnificent perfomance! Thanks Drwestbury

  • A fantastic rendition of a beautiful hymn. One of my favourites too! :)
