I wonder, does anyone know whatever happened to the two large sculptures that were positioned on either side of the portico, the two men with torches. Did the Soviets destroy them too?
@BoborGlenn They have been from Arno Breker and in bronze. The Russian melted them in 1946. They are from Brekers classical period (1927-1948) and would be today plenty millions worth - compared to the today market prices of his smaler scluptures.
Reichskanzlei is gone and Speer is dead.... but actualy some of red marble plates from Reichskanzlei was used in building Berlin metro station Morenstrasse and plates are still there... :))
@DazlaSS3 Are you sure? well, I apreciate thegigantic effort of Mr. Speer but....these proportions are in total disaccord with human canons. here is not Beauty but Oppresion.
Please consult AAchitect Otto Rieth skechtes; and you will understand what I mean. Thanks*
This structure is similar to the work of Paul Cret in Washington D.C. in the late 30's - note the Federal Reserve Building on Constitution Ave. You can see the stripped classicism of the era and imperial pretensions in both, right down to the eagles over the main entrances. Pity the Reich Chancellery was destroyed, could have been a poignant reminder of that era in Germany
@Dickenson1960 without doubt this style can be seen in many government buildings in America built during the 1930's, right down to the eagles and fascii all over the place. It is a monumental and impressive style but one which makes the human element nearly irrelevant. Of course during a time of great statist pretension this seems understandable.
@aardvaark069 Could not agree more. Actually, the style was utilized by both totalitarian and democratic governments as an expression of authority and permanence. I suppose to reduce or mitigate the humanist element in the structure was deemed necessary to communicate the majesty of the state, law or whatever the message was to be imparted to the viewer. The message is timeless, the state is great you are insignificant.
@Dickenson1960 You have nailed it precisely. I must admit that I love the stylized majesty of the stuff though. And such attention to detail. In all of these buildings the quality of the workmanship is nearly always astonishing.
@aardvaark069 I too have a love for the artistry and craftsmanship of these outgrowths of the beaux arts movement. For a real adventure in over the top though, nothing can touch the Palais Garnier (Paris Opera) a monument to humanist exuberance at its best.
@Dickenson1960 It's on my list. In the Reichskanzlei building I particularly like the pink marble walls interfacing with the grey marble door frames at major portals. the color combination is both powerful and refined.
The size of the building is so monumental that the furniture and humans seem to be in a wrong scale. Some of the red marble of this building was used by the Russians to decorate several Moscow's subway stations.
If this building had survived today it would be more visited than Versailles. Great video .
@doodoodoogg,please note the content, the building is most beautyfull and was a work of arcitectual brilliance,i understand they are going to re-build theScloss-why not give this a go for good measure"a few things omited of corse"you have to cater for every one nowadays.whots after 87?they shoul;d re-build all there lost palaces and be proud of them.all nations have History...

So wie das berliner Stadtschloß sollte man auch die neue Reichskanzlei wieder aufbauen. Wäre sicherlich ein Touristenmagnet ;)
