I have 2 guinea pigs and tomorrow I am cleaning their grace glands as they are dirty right now. Anyway, my guineas are both sows - is it normal for their grace glands to be dirty? Wherever I look about cleaning grace glands the information is about boars.

Just want to say that girls do have them but they are rarely as active as some boy's. The grease gland is used for scent marking and as boys need to mark to keep other boars away they have a much more active grease gland. Not all boys need to have it cleaned regularly, just the guys who have an active gland, though a quick cleaning when it is a bit yuck is always good for any guy.

Hey Laura,

It's starting to become colder and colder here, and before you know it, it will be winter. But my boar, Buddy, is shedding. Whenever I pick him up, all of the excess fur comes off on our clothes and it gets on the fleece. I don't want him to be cold in the winter, (he still has tons of blankets), but I'm afraid that he wont grow his coat back. Is there a special brush or shampoo I can use? And I was thinking about taking him to the vet for a checkup, anything I could ask her? Thanks

i was just watching some of your videos. i have hamsters and i was looking into a guinea pig, when you change the cages around it can actually stress out hamsters. i'm not sure if it is the same for pigs. i just dont what poor alfie and gus to get stressed.

hi i have a quick question... i notice that you give your guinea pigs huge handfuls of hay...do they eat it all throughout the day or do you just like to give them a very hearty amount to eat throughout the day??

i give my guinea pig a small handful of hay many times day and im wondering if how you are doing it is better

@kunhee96 It doesn't particularly matter, but guinea pigs need an unlimited amount of hay. If you have an old guinea pig which doesn't do much fat-burning, possibly give a tiny bit less. :)

I watched this on full-screen, and no offense, but a male pig's butt close up and larger than life is enough to make a person nauseous. Anyway, we had g. pigs back in the 80's and had no idea they had that gland. Pet owners are so much better off today with the internet and people who take the time to educate others like Piggiepigpigs.

@xxiiROCK The sound gus was making is called chattering, it useually means your guinea pigs talking to you and is a sighn of content (being happy). So gus was probly just talking to laura like she was talking to him.

no females do not have grease glands and grease glands purpose are to mark a territory but only on a male. females pee on stuff but i dont believe they have grease glands! :) hope this helped! by the way i watch ALL of your vids!!

@xoEpicLillyxo Well I always thought that females didn't have them until I researched it - this is off gorgeous guineas website - The grease gland in a guinea pig is located just above where a tail would be (if cavies had a tail). Some sows and some boars have active grease glands that can be a challenge to clean.
