I mean, if you think about it, Shane was so dependent on Carmen (that might not be the right word, but it's the only one I can think of right now). In a good relationship, you don't depend on the other person to make you the best you can be. You don't wait for someone to come around and fix you, which is basically what Shane did with Carmen.
