Perhaps if people didn't want to play as the Werehog, they wouldn't have bought a game called "Sonic Unleashed" with a Werehog taking up half of the cover. No offense, it's just common sense. Collectibles as requirements are nothing new either, if you search for them actively you should only need to go back once or twice.
The medals encourage you to explore the level and add replay value, and yes it is legitimate. If they weren't required, they would just feel tacked on and pointless like the red rings and the silver medals in Sonic 2006.
@BaconStein If the sun and moon medals were like the red rings in Generations, they would be worth collecting, especially for completionists. I do agree with you on the silver medals in 06. They give you nothing but a gold medal and an achievement. That's it. lol.

I don't understand how Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations got a higher review than this considering that Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations are simple copy and paste of Unleashed. You can just look at the gameplay and tell that no originality went into it when they made Sonic Colors and Generations (gameplay wise), but of course the original gets slammed while the copies get praised. @ThePlasticBowl That bothers me too. Though I like all if those 3 games.Colors the least because, as you said, it didn't do anything new gameplay wise. Sure, power ups were nice but game lasted around 3-4 hours. Unleashed took me 9 hours doind all the levels and Generations 7. SG also brought back the Genesis gameplay which is a nice touch. And Colors might also have the weakest bosses in the entire "trilogy".

You know, if it wasn't for this review, or any other professional review, Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations would've never existed. Both of those game took everything that made Unleashed great and was greatly improved. At first I was pissed off that IGN gave this game a bad score but looking at how well recieved the last two games were using the same engine, I would have to say, and I'm probably going to get alot of thumbs down when I say this, but I'm thankful for IGN trashing this game.
@VINCEJisSONiCtheMC Yeah, I guess your right. While Unleashed was not perfect, the score they gave it was incredibly harsh. A 6 or 7 would've been enough to tell SEGA, "Okay, there's still some things that need to be fixed."
@Akuma3671 Colors and Generations didn't improve anything. They took out everything that was great about Unleashed, including the intense fast-paced day stage level design. I don't know why people see them as improvements. It's the same game but dumbed-down for toddlers and "classic" fans. They did literally nothing to progress the series (unless you mean the handheld versions, which at least had more intricate level design and more involved gameplay).
@BaconStein Well for one thing, the day time levels were just press X and hold forward most of the time, and BAM. You're at the goal. Sonic the Hedgehog is about two things: Speed and Platforming. While they had the Speed down there was little to no platforming. Sonic Colors improved on the 2D side of the platforming but not the 3D. In the 3D sections, you're just moving forward. Then we have Sonic Generations, which improved both categories, with the edition to multiple pathsways.
@BaconStein .....that you can take while getting to the goal (something the classic games had that was missing since Sonic Heroes). As for the Werehog levels, I know what you're gonna say, "He has platforming sections in his levels". Well yeah, I won't deny that, but for people who only want to play the game for the daytime levels would feel cheated. Because in order to experience platforming they have to suffer through the Werehog. You probably like the Werehog but here's the thing
@BaconStein When SEGA makes a Sonic game with a certain gimmick, it shouldn't be something that's shoved down our throats. They need to put into consideration that not everyone will like the Werehog. Therefore they should do one of the two things. 1. Make the Werehog mostly optional. or 2. Give the main Sonic levels platforming sections so everyone can be happy.

@BaconStein I have nothing against the boost. That's the most fun part of the daytime levels, and I'm not saying take the Werehog out completely, I'm saying have both game play styles balanced. It feels like I'm playing most of the game at night more than you do in the daytime (especially when fighting bosses since in the day you only fight two of them). To me, it's like the Werehog takes up like 75% of the whole game rather than 50% like he's supposed to.

The Werehog added combat in addition to speed. 2 games in 1 is a plus, running 70% of the time and jumping the other 30% is far more repetitive. And we can all agree repetition is pretty bad.

3D platforming? Is that a joke? You just hlod forward on the analog stick and twitch it to the left or right while spamming the crap out of the boost with ridiculously long quick-step sections. Even in the Robotn--- Eggman land area, platforming 3D sections are extremely rare. I thought the nightime stages were OK, but the overhyped daytime stages were the problems here.

Thank heaven that Hilary quit IGN. While I agree that this game is not one of Sonic's best it is nowhere near a bad game. An adverage game when it comes to Sonic but as a stand alone game it is pretty dang good.

I'm VERY picky when it comes to Sonic games, I haven't liked one since Sonic 3 & Knuckles, yet I was blown away by Sonic Unleashed. Don't let this review put you off people. Its by no means a perfect game, but its well polished and fun and and yes, even the werehog levels are fun.
Hey, at least it was better than Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, and also, I respect that SEGA tries to try new things with Sonic (despite many ideas failing) which is why i prefer Sonic to Mario, cause it's always, ALWAYS, jumping on heads with him (still like mario though). Also, all the failing ideas at least make the good ones stand out more ^_^ Gotta love generations
@linkonair Hey hey hey back up there buddy. Sonic 06 is a MUCH better game than Sonic Unleashed is. Sonic 06 at least has multiple playable characters, great 3D platforming, and an epic storyline. Unleashed got the storyline pretty well and it got the speed good but there isn't any platforming as Sonic and platforming is more important than speed when it comes to Sonic, therefore 06 trumps Unleashed.
@pkstarstorm1up Sonic 06 was broken as heck, clipping issues, graphical glitches, sonic felt pretty damn slow, and as for the story, according to the game none of that even happened, It is not better than Unleashed, (excluding werehog), it could have been, it had the potential, but it was too broken...could have used more polish
ps-i could care less about multiple playable characters, the classics were the best and you pretty much just play as Sonic in most if not all of them

Yeah, the werehog stages aren't that good. And they do get boring. But this guy is making this game sound even worse, IGN needs to get their shit together and get someone who isn't biased.

You know, if it wasn't for this review, or any other professional review, Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations would've never existed. Both of those game took everything that made Unleashed great and was greatly improved. At first I was pissed off that IGN gave this game a bad score but looking at how well recieved the last two games were using the same engine, I would have to say, and I'm probably going to get alot of thumbs down when I say this, but I'm thankful for IGN trashing this game.

@Akuma3671 Colors and Generations didn't improve anything. They took out everything that was great about Unleashed, including the intense fast-paced day stage level design. I don't know why people see them as improvements. It's the same game but dumbed-down for toddlers and "classic" fans. They did literally nothing to progress the series (unless you mean the handheld versions, which at least had more intricate level design and more involved gameplay).

@BaconStein Well for one thing, the day time levels were just press X and hold forward most of the time, and BAM. You're at the goal. Sonic the Hedgehog is about two things: Speed and Platforming. While they had the Speed down there was little to no platforming. Sonic Colors improved on the 2D side of the platforming but not the 3D. In the 3D sections, you're just moving forward. Then we have Sonic Generations, which improved both categories, with the edition to multiple pathsways.

@BaconStein .....that you can take while getting to the goal (something the classic games had that was missing since Sonic Heroes). As for the Werehog levels, I know what you're gonna say, "He has platforming sections in his levels". Well yeah, I won't deny that, but for people who only want to play the game for the daytime levels would feel cheated. Because in order to experience platforming they have to suffer through the Werehog. You probably like the Werehog but here's the thing

@BaconStein When SEGA makes a Sonic game with a certain gimmick, it shouldn't be something that's shoved down our throats. They need to put into consideration that not everyone will like the Werehog. Therefore they should do one of the two things. 1. Make the Werehog mostly optional. or 2. Give the main Sonic levels platforming sections so everyone can be happy.

@Akuma3671 Because heaven forbid the boost should ever be implemented into one of the stages in a game that introduces it to the 3D perspective, am I right? Perhaps if people didn't want to play as the Werehog, they wouldn't have bought a game called "Sonic Unleashed" with a Werehog taking up half of the cover. No offense, it's just common sense. Collectibles as requirements are nothing new either, if you search for them actively you should only need to go back once or twice.

@BaconStein I have nothing against the boost. That's the most fun part of the daytime levels, and I'm not saying take the Werehog out completely, I'm saying have both game play styles balanced. It feels like I'm playing most of the game at night more than you do in the daytime (especially when fighting bosses since in the day you only fight two of them). To me, it's like the Werehog takes up like 75% of the whole game rather than 50% like he's supposed to.

2: werehog arms are strechy because in the opening cutscene, sonic turns into a werehog because he is being possesed, or at least being attempted by dark gaia. you know this because chip says it after he regains his memory in adabat but he wouldn't know that cause he sucks so much

The Werehog added combat in addition to speed. 2 games in 1 is a plus, running 70% of the time and jumping the other 30% is far more repetitive. And we can all agree repetition is pretty bad.

Your "unresponsive" jump button is just you not pressing it at all, and you somehow missed the Q.T.E. COMPLETELY even though it was RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOUR FACE.
Stupid airplane section? Not being able to shoot guns? 1: This is supposed to be the (slight) rebirth of the Sky Chase level from Sonic Adventure. 2: I do see your point, but something tells me you're a FPS person.

3D platforming? Is that a joke? You just hlod forward on the analog stick and twitch it to the left or right while spamming the crap out of the boost with ridiculously long quick-step sections. Even in the Robotn--- Eggman land area, platforming 3D sections are extremely rare. I thought the nightime stages were OK, but the overhyped daytime stages were the problems here.

WOW... I thought this review was a joke when I first saw it. I mean, you can even see that the player is purposely failing to make the levels look bad. For shame IGN, that's embarrassingly unprofessional and sneaky.
I'm VERY picky when it comes to Sonic games, I haven't liked one since Sonic 3 & Knuckles, yet I was blown away by Sonic Unleashed. Don't let this review put you off people. Its by no means a perfect game, but its well polished and fun and and yes, even the werehog levels are fun.

Hey, at least it was better than Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, and also, I respect that SEGA tries to try new things with Sonic (despite many ideas failing) which is why i prefer Sonic to Mario, cause it's always, ALWAYS, jumping on heads with him (still like mario though). Also, all the failing ideas at least make the good ones stand out more ^_^ Gotta love generations

@linkonair Hey hey hey back up there buddy. Sonic 06 is a MUCH better game than Sonic Unleashed is. Sonic 06 at least has multiple playable characters, great 3D platforming, and an epic storyline. Unleashed got the storyline pretty well and it got the speed good but there isn't any platforming as Sonic and platforming is more important than speed when it comes to Sonic, therefore 06 trumps Unleashed.

@pkstarstorm1up Sonic 06 was broken as heck, clipping issues, graphical glitches, sonic felt pretty damn slow, and as for the story, according to the game none of that even happened, It is not better than Unleashed, (excluding werehog), it could have been, it had the potential, but it was too broken...could have used more polish
ps-i could care less about multiple playable characters, the classics were the best and you pretty much just play as Sonic in most if not all of them
