  • Best locomotive ever to roam North America.

  • this is what CSX looks like in 1981 look at them now in 2011

I was born on October 02,1981 in Greenville, North Carolina

I'm 29 now i was newborn back then.

  • this has a really good sound clip of the bell and great video.

  • Those people did what I did as a kid in the 80's. "WOW train!" then overwhelmed by the loud haunting industrial whine, and have to back away in awe.

  • I will be out in DC next week I may try to catch the MARC out to here for some train watching

  • What a beautiful sight listen to those wonder diesels

  • Great video. Having those 2 Geeps nose to nose it neat. If they could talk what they wud say to each other that day who knows.

  • @fordtaurus93 They'd probably say, "Holy shit a talking train!"

  • @fordtaurus93 In those days, they were actually butt-to-butt. Lol.

  • along with the gp30, the 9's have class

  • I currently live in Cumberland MD and when I was little, when I would stay with my grandparents, at night, I could hear the distinctive sound of first generation Geeps and SD-9s working in the yard. To me, this is a more sentimental sound than steam! But that's just me.

  • (1) I wish i had a video camera in 1981! (2) What a great video, history, love the High Nose GP9's & Caboose! Thanks!

  • The sound on this scene is part of RR history. INCREDIBLE!

  • That's where the Met Sub and the Old Main Line Sub come together,,, he going toward Brunswick, MD.....

  • Here in Serbia, ex Yugoslavia, we have GM EMD G16 loco's that all have 16-567 engines, except a few of them modernised to 16-645E (non-Turbo) engines...and we also have some with 120645E3 engines (turbo'es),and I must admit that I love these old engines that still go after 50 years in service...

  • Which end is the front end of those types of engines?

  • @ghfdfhfdndxhcg depends on the road. B&O NW and SOU ran long hood forward. C&O and others ran short hood forward. B&O's front would be the long hood end. Chessie put the cat on the front, whichever end it may be for the origin road.

  • Thanks, I was just wondering because the cab is in the middle and the two hoods are both the same height.

  • @jlaroccoii That is true..so you may see a GP-7/9/18 with the cat on the short end or the long end depending on which road owned it....WM were long end forward too UNTIL they lowered the hoods and made the short end forward. So you may see WM GP-7/9's with either.

  • @Shield1751 Not true. WM were short end forward before they lowered the hoods. Look at any old WM photos of their GP7's and GP9's before they chopped the noses off, and you'll see the "F" on the short hood end of the locomotive.

  • @jlaroccoii Another RR that ran long hood forward GP7's and GP9's was the PRR.

  • @meccaturbo On GP9's and 7's the long nose was the standard forward end unless a road wanted otherwise.

  • AWESOME VIDEO 5***** AND FAVORITE

  • Nothing sounds better than an EMD 567 wound right up. 5 stars.

  • Knowing that these engines were scrapped is, well, kind of sad...

  • got csx to blame for that

  • Now there's a sound that hasn't been heard on a mainline freight since I was a kid... A GM 16-567C. I don't think there's anything better sounding than one. Wait... A set of 4 of them working in tandem.

  • oh yah thats a sound I trully miss hearing I used to hear the Geeps on the Mo Pac when a local arrived in my hometown and also the old Geeps on the MKT when they deliverd a transfer to town now the geeps are long gone the old MKT branch is gone and the UPRR blows through town on the old MO Pac Line and the local that does come to town uses those damn genset units and those dont sound good to me at all

  • Anybody have information regarding the disposition of these units?

  • yea...they've long since been scrapped

  • These two likely have, but theres a good few surviving Chessie GP9's.

  • Are any b&o GP-9s left that are still Hi-nose?

  • B&O 6525

  • @nikosjk1 That unit is in Paradise City Athen's Georgia. It has a bad generator in it. Last chessie standing.

  • lol, you do know I took the picture that you are getting your info from right ?

  • @nikosjk1 Sorry, I see that now. Didn't mean to say what you already know.

  • The South Branch Valley RR in WV has at least one. However, many of the B&O GP9's were ex C&O, not all were originally B&O. The way you can tell is the original B&O ones are set up for long hood forward, wereas the ex C&O ones were set up for short hood forward. Easy to tell on a Chessie unit, just look at which end has the Chessie cat.

  • These two units are original B&O....the cat's on the long hood.

  • r all gp9's hinoses

  • Amazing sound! its such a shame chessie system no longer runs the rails. Such a fantastic sight to even see one of the old ones!!

  • dude nice cheesie systems will never be found again but at museams and models railroads

  • I know: sectional track, clickety clack! A GP9 with a 567 EMD prime mover, and no turbo.

    The sound of the 50s

  • @westpoint64 Isn't that 'jointed rail' rather than 'sectional track' ? (the latter being our modeler stuff) ;-)

  • You wouldn't get it.

  • It's called railfanning.

  • WOW

  • SO COOL DUDE

  • i have a picture of this same spot in a book. really cool good hob

    Sincelery

    Ryan

  • I wonder how many GP9s will be needed to pull

a 5000 ton on a 2% grade or a 10000 t coal train it must hav ben realy loud music all the units in run 8

    christian :-)

  • as a child i remember 6-7 engine lashups of gp-9s and gp-7s...you could hear them for miles away coming and going...like 5-7 miles...

  • Fantastic

    Christian :-)

    Düsseldorf Germany

  • the sound of the gp9 that's real music

  • Think what it was like before turbocharging, when all locos sounded like that!

  • listen to that sectioned track, click click

  • Ok folks....this is THE best GP-9 audio show on youtube (chills going up and down my spine)

  • I love that sound. When I first became an engineer about 3 years ago I had the BNSF 1600 (ex-NP 202) in a consist. She sounded just like these girls do when my train pulled away after we made our crew change. Great memories! Great vid!

  • awesome video, gp9s were some of the best units ever! too bad most of them are gone :( GO GP9!

  • listen to the puppies run!!!

  • Check out my page for some CEMR black GP9's on 85lb rail

  • Boy i missed out on all these oldies by 5 years....too bad they are almost gone...Great video. and they have odd lookin cabooses :P

  • Love the chant of those 567's. Theses days, the 645 is becoming more rare, what a shame.

  • GP9s pulling freight, when was the last time I saw something like that...

    That ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!

  • The last GP9's I saw running on a class one in the states was 1987, N&W and B&O paint. CN in 1999. I miss seeing them run.

  • are those supercharged or was i hearing their generators whining?

  • That whining you hear are generators. The GP-9s and 7s were not turbocharged. Definitely, the 567 is a very good sounding engine, and reliable too. Many are still going strong, 50 years after they were built.

  • thats what yo u get when you let GM build your diesel engines. They're hard to kill and true workhorses.

  • thats a great sound

  • Awesome, another video added to my favorites! Now if only someone could build a time machine!

  • Great video its good to see some old GP's pulling hard.
