  • I found this video a few years ago with the same question you asked after watching that movie...."why havent i heard of this man"

  • Growing up in DC, I heard of Petey when he was in his Hay Day. Then, I nearly forgot about him until a white guy in the Air Force showed me a video on YouTube. My memory reset and I was thinking about Petey again. The movie about him was late, but it was on time and KUDOS to the writers and actors in Talk to Me for letting the world know about Petey.

  • This nigga talkin bout change an his lips SuPPER Black. lmao Smokin dat designer! lmfao!

  • I feel you bruh! Yo I just watched this movie for the first time and I an so mad bc ...do you know how many black history papers I could've written about him in school...lol! This man is that real deal and my children's children WILL know about him.

  • Wow my Brotha! Powerful sentiments! I too was astonished when I first got hip to Petey Greene. I felt like someone had purposely hidden this brother from me because he struck a chord with me in a similar fashion to when I first heard Malcolm X. You can hide many things but the truth shines like a beacon and Petey spoke the truth, I saw a PBS special on Petey done by his nephew Terrence and I was completely blown away. You presented yourself in a most honorable fashion. Keep up the good work!

  • Petey Greene is my uncle. and I like the fact that you took the time to make this video! He had an effect on a lot of people and im mad that I never got the chance to meet him but he was a real nigga..R.I.P Uncle Petey

  • "I don't want no laughing, I don't want no crying, and most of all, no signifying" Petey Green

  • Whoa, whoa, whoa there youngblood ....Yo' tail feather's all lit up about not hearing about Petey. It's More like Petey never heard of you. He wasn't too concerned about it either but keep on pushin'.

  • Check the documentary yo (Adjust Your Color: The Truth of Petey Greene). I haven't seen the movie yet (will tonight) but the doc is the badness. And though Cheadle is an excellent actor, ain't nothing like the truth right from the source...

  • People who don't know there History are Doomed to Repeat it. They don't want US to know the TRUTH about our self , I'm just glad you had a chance to see it Bro. Accept your own and BE YOUR SELF!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • THATS SOME REAL SHIT BRO!! PETEY GREENE HAD SUCH A MAJOR IMPACT ON MY LIFE!! I TOO HAVE HAD A REAL HARD LIFE,AS DID RALPH.THAT WAS SOME REAL SHIT YOU JUST SAID THO...ITS NOT A BLACK OR WHITE THING,ITS ABOUT TURNING A NEGATIVE TO A POSITIVE!! LEX GET IT!! ALWAYS 100 WIT IT!!

  • Petey Greene was a real man. Someday you may come to understand the meaning of those words.

  • KRAYZIE BONE

  • Peety Greene was a local personality in DC who was a local favorite he was not known to other areas of the country. I lived in jersey in the early 80's and I had never heard of him until 1982 when BET ( also based in DC ) put on the Peety Greene's show on their netrwork.

  • I wouldnt call getting cancer self-destructing i think that was more of the hollywood cliche'

He chose not to be a national celebrity he remained a local D.C. celeb because he cared about this community black and white and everyone in between. He went on the radio and begged for the D.C. riots to stop after MLK's death,

telling people not to destroy their own homes.......... AMAZING !

  • j'ah avin a laff bro, ya call yaself blak an nevz heard o peetey, ya need a lesson in blaxploitatiojn bro

  • Word man, I feel you bro. That was some deepness.

  • you would have to be a washingtonian and be at least bornno later than the mid sixties at the latest. but you're right...we stopped teaching our children about the true historians in our community.

  • I love dis post. I thought It was gna be sum bogus shit. But u talkin real talk. I jus got dun watching "Talk to me" and had to look up Petey Green, hence why I came across this post.

All I got to say is U talking real talk brutha. So u not alone.

Great interpretation of Petey Green Don Chedale. Great movie.

I love Petey Green. Ppl we all need to do our research mannnn for real. We dnt know coz they dnt wnt us to know. WORD.......!

  • Your youth had a lot to do with you not knowing about Mr. Greene. Dude was the truth and from what I've read, the movie only skimmed the surface.

  • you know i live in Australia and I'm always chasing the truth, This movie told the truth about what your people went through. The sad thing is though the only way I got to see this film was when I found it on the clearance rack at a video store. Thank you for this video post

  • dude petey greene is one of my favorite hosts of all time...he's helped me understand how we all perceive and relate to eachother...not even as black and white people...but as PEOPLE...he died the year I was born funny enough...but he had so many things in common with me too..like getting in trouble, substance abuse, etc...so hearing this all coming from someone I could relate to really drives his points home to me...

  • What tribe was your family stolen from??? Its that time of year again.....time to pick dat cotton bitch!!!

  • NIGGER

  • @notchjohnson1 say it in real life

  • i agree its sad, the BEST never get their full credit until after their reign. everybody wants to smile in your face because it is uncomfortable to be real, but why?

  • thank you much for this. couldnt have said it better.

  • Today on PBS I saw a biography on Petey Greene, and I laughed my ass off the whole way through. Petey was really racist, but in a very cool way "you cracker mother%#@!er"lol! He banters and jabbers kind of like this guy in the video. Petey Greene is the original Bad Ass

    -may he not be forgotten

  • he wasnt a racist. people assume that since you say cracker or nigger that you are a racist. he knew prejudice would always exist, unlike people today who think we can hide it or ignore it and it will go away.

its no surprise you had never heard of petey greene. people misunderstand him because of the words he used. people cant seem to get back that, but for the most part people are unintelligent.

its just like howard stern, petey greene knew that stern was himself for the new generation.

  • @americanboy717 understand cracker isnt racist did white people not crack the whip whipcracker =cracker not demoralizing or demeaning

  • i just watched the movie 'Talk to Me' a few minutes ago on tvone...and i have never heard of him either, go figure ~Peace

  • There's a wonderful PBS documentary posted here on youtube on Petey's life, called "Adjust Your Color". It is excellent!

  • I just saw the movie for the first time and this movie touch me the same way. I think Petey Greene was a powerful man because he always kept it real and back in those days white people hated that and they still do today.

  • I know wat you mean....

  • Nigger!!!!!!

  • Honkey!!!!!!

  • forreal nigga, i saw the movie yesterday one of the best cuts ive seen in a minute i had the same reaction i never knew who the brotha was and i feel what u sayin man about beeing honest. alot of people follow whatever (like all these hiphop slogans ppl following not knowing the meaning behind em) like they say if you dont stand for something you´ll fall for anything, we need people like petey greene to speak the truth& tell it like it is, man keep on doin you thing & stay down til you come up.

  • he was soo real he taught me how to eat a watermelon

  • If you want to really know who Petey Greene was check out his biography...

Laugh If You Like, Aint a Damn Thing Funny: The Life Story of Ralph Petey Greene, as told to Lurma Rackley.

    watch?v=lasKlJiydsI

    and

    watch?v=KWPH5YeteBQ

  • couldnt watch the whole thing but that whats up, i hadnt heard of him either, hope u saw his videos on here

  • Yeah dog u right =P , well im latin and i know what used to happen to black ppl before, and this movie shows about MARTIN LUTHER KING jr. and around 40 years ago well its a cool and sad at the same time 1 OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES

movie name : TALK TO ME

  • I feel ya dog i said the same thing...until i saw the movie i was clueless about the brotha.

  • i just finished watching the movie and started checking out petey greene on youtube.

i never heard of him either and i came across your video. i love your intense monologue man and i'm even feeling pretty inspired by it.

  • if anybody know how to get ahold of old radio shows , tv shows , stand ups whatever feat. petey greene get at me. i would go to the stations & channels myself and find out how to get ahold of the archives but i live over in sweden although i will write em and see whats up. they need to relese all the radio shows and full tv episodes man its a shame if peoples missed out on all that material, real shit never gets old.

  • that was an amazing speech

  • So did you like the cleaner??

  • Brotha, Brotha! I slept on the movie too--didn't pay attention to the trailers thought it was another lame black comedy satire of the 70's.

    I purchased the movie a month ago and watched it for the first time Saturday, It was like finding a gem in your attic..I watched it 5x's over the weekend absorbing the vibe of the film. BRILLIANT performances from Cheadle and Ef;

the whole MLK assasination and riot aftermath was chilling to watch on screen man. Opened for James Brown 4/5!!! WOW

  • Peace King Bless you for sharing and the moral of this post!

  • Dude you def on point. Just saw the movie on CineMax - WoW..

  • n* is a legend Stick.

  • Until keepin' real goes wrong....

  • you are the truth, i saw certain previews of the documentary. I didn't know who he was either.

  • Its alot of people out there that have done alot of good things that get recognize nationally

  • Its alot of grammar schools to go to.

  • Especially in the civil rights movement; men, women, children of all races contributed and SACRIFICED but their stories never told.

Who knows the HEROIC things the old skool janitor or lawyer did back in the 60's and 70's to help King and others build and progress to Barack Obama.

  • Veritas Vos Liberabit

  • I'm from DC son and we got a building named after him. He is a hero in our city. YA DIG!!

  • Read Lurma Rackley's book "Laugh If You Like, Ain't a Damn Thing Funny " to know Petey Greene's life. She recorded interviews with him before he died. "Talk to Me" is only a part of the story.

Ayi Kwei Armah has a lecture on YT entitled awakening. In it he describes a true leader. To him a true leader makes himself obsolete by turning the people into leaders themselves. I agree with him. That way leaders can no longer be taken away be we all are them.

  • yo stick, never herd of him either, once i seen talk too me i felt the same way.. i want to hear your story ,dat baby mama shyt, man tell it!!!!!!!!!!

  • Growing up as a kid in DC Petey Greene was the man. He went to the Univ of Lorton CC, just like my uncles. Also Petey was a genuine guy and gave people a break including Donna Brazil of the Democratic Committee. Check the documentry on PBS....

  • completely agree, I saw it and wanted to know more. He is a big part of DC history. More so than Marion Barry

  • i feel you my brother. you should see the documentary. it's 10 times better then the movie.

  • I didn't know about him til just tonight and saw the independence lens documentary about his life. It was very positive and moving. He needs to be lifted up and respected. Keep it up stick187,

    fs

  • independent lens just did a show about him

  • U need to look him up my nigga

  • Hey Stick.I had no idea who Petey Greene was either. What a bro! What a bro.!That movie almost had me crying. Not to much does that.10,000 at his goin away party! That pretty much tells ya about his importance.See ya!Peace and Im out.

  • its a great movie and don cheadles portrayal of petey green is excellent he was before his time even before howard stern.

  • That's what I have always done. Learn what not to do from various people, including my first step-father. I don't drink alcohol. I don't take illegal drugs or abuse legal drugs. I don't rob people. I don't knock people to the ground and pee in their faces. I try to do what's right, even if everyone around me says what's wrong is right. If evil is cool, I'd rather stay warm.

  • yea thats the kind of people i pick to look up to ex-con,junkie,alcoholic losers who talk a bunch of BULLSHIT!!!!!! try picking a white man if you want a real hero! know what i'm sayin?

  • Comment removed

  • I remember Petey Greene's television show on WDCA-20. I'm glad you've had this awakening and I hope that you will be inspired to be successful your career. So now you know...whatcha gonna do? Peace and Blessings!

  • Yeah dude...if you aint from DC..you probably didnt hear about Petey. I watched his show as a young kid and lived the Petey Greene experience. I am glad you paying Homage to him. That was years ago so even some people from DC may not know about him.. but he was a REAL dude.

  • You're not the only one sweetie.. i NEVER HEARD OF THIS MAN either until i seen the movie today.. and the movie really moved me.. made me glad to be black.. made me proud of who i am.. but at the same time thats messed up how no one really heard of him.. dayum..

  • I saw this movie for the first time today believe it or not and I was just telling my husband that I have never heard of Petey Greene in my life! I feel bad too because I'm black and I grew up in DC and I should have known about him - what happened???

  • My Dude Hollar at your boy!. I agree with you. I'm about to have a show they promised fm and pushed me to am on a spanish speaking station. I guess I better learn the langauge. Any way Dog Hollar back, maybe we can hook up when I get on AIR!

  • i just found out about petey greene yesterday when i saw "talk to me". i think that the world needs to know about him and other people like him who keep it real.

    great video! 5 stars!

  • Petey might sound look and act foolish, however after listening to him you'll know that Ole' Petey Had a High IQ. You don't have to go to school to be Smart!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I saw the Petey Greene skit on youtube his personality, voice, looks and country ways are exactly like some of my relatives down in Southern Va.

  • I am from DC and I think I remember the name in the past being mentioned. I came home last night after work , turned on the tube, and stayed captivated by a man I never knew. Cool movie. Thanks Petey!

  • yo man i just saw the movie and was blown away because i to have never herd of petey greene and i am born and rasied in dc and have been in the entertainment business my entire life, im 40 years old i should have known about him,

  • saw that movie yesterday too, on hbo...here i am googling, youtoubin his name for the past 2 hours

  • Honestly, I just heard of him about a week ago...i feel the same way that you do...there are so many people in history that have affected so many different people in different ways and they fade into the vaccuum of time...If it wasnt for YouTube and sincere people uploading great videos none of us would know of these things...besides the other bullshit thats online we can still find great content that otherwise would go unnoticed and unappreciated...

  • 233 times you said

    "You Know What I'm Sayin'"

    You on radio????

    You know what I'm sayin'?

  • I feel the same way as you...YOU HAVE INSPIRED ME...I'm about to start a new category on my website that will highlight historical black figures that we don't get taught about...not from white folks(cuz it ain't their jobs), but from black folks.

  • I'm so glad to know that there are other people that have also dicovered the ledgendary Petey Greene,I resently viewed the movie and I also had the ask "why i hadn't heard of him..He was a Great man, after i thought about it for a while i also wondered how many other petey greenes out there that we dont know about or never heard of...?

  • I just finished watching the movie for the first time about 10 mins ago - I looked up everything about Petey Greene and it got me here. Good video dude... It was a great movie indeed, very powerful.

  • it's unbelievable, i haven't heard of Petey Greene til about three days ago and just, i mean JUST like you said, i couldn't believe i haven't! i watched it twice on ONDEMAND and will watch it again maybe three more times this week. it's time ya'll...it's that time.

  • To echo everyone else here - I'd never heard of him either. I JUST saw this movie Sat. morning on HBO.

I'm glad that I found this thread - so many of you have articulated the way I feel: at a loss that I JUST found out about him.

  • I just finished watching Talk To Me.. And I had no clue who this man was... So I had to look him up also... glad you posted this.... Its a great movie and your right like why have I have heard of this man til now.

  • say man truth be told, i never got on here to hear the stuff you talking about, not saying i never wanted to talk or hear about this type of stuff, but i always got on here to look at weird videos or something, but anyway i feel you on alot of what your saying and dogg we do need to come together as a people and Petey Greene, did do what we should all do and thats keep it real, p.s. i'm watching his movie right now.

  • This is a GREAT video-- I am about to make one as well! Just finished watching this MOVIE-- I was ready to do research and I happened to come across this!! I am glad you posted this!

  • Great, great video! Thanks for this. I just watched the movie Talk to me, and it was incredable. This is comming from a white guy, and the Dr.King part just about killed me it was so powerful. Listen to this man people, get out there and make your voices heard, and VOTE! We can change this world for the better. Keep up the good work stick187

  • always good to find out celebs with something in common

  • I never heard of him before either.

  • Crazy shit...I've never heard of em either until rightnow..im actually still watching the movie(the part where he walked off of the J.Carson show)and i just had the urge to pause it and google/youtube the nigga...come to think about the shit is real sad that I/we never heard of em...cuz he was one of the realest niggas to ever do it.

  • u have another opportunity to self destruct?

  • No another opportunity to actually make it doing it my way.

  • Man' back in the late70s' alotta people black 'n' white in the D.C. area were checking out

Petey Greene's Washington on channel 20 Sunday nites. Sometimes u couldn't believe what u were seeing or hearing. And it seems there ain't no current rap/hip-hop artist out there who could touch him in putting togetter rhymes. But then again' they can't touch Bob Dylan either.

  • when he walked off the stage on jonny carson lol that was the best. i told i was gonna keep it real

  • i watched talked to me ...seems to me petey Greene was the original shock jock to me and not howard stern =) he was def a real real man !

  • I just now watched that on showtime damn I never heard of him either why the fuck no one put him on broadcast before in that way!

  • i didn't know before the movie either Stick,

but now i'm one of his biggest fan, Big up to you Stick, You and Dizza have a friend in Gron, AKA the "Noble One"

  • I, like many others had no idea who Petey Greene was but thanks to the movie "Talk to me", I can add him to my list of African American heroes who played a role in the unification of black people during the civil rights era.shot out to "Stick", I was blown away by your depth of "sincere interest",in our black history. Sadly to say, most black men that I know have no interest in anything other than ass, cars and money. "THANK YOU FOR CARING"

  • TALK TO ME! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am confused, I got forced by a girl to see Juno. Cheadle and Elijafor are bad ass and this girl gets Oscar nomination. Her performance cannot even compare. Petey Greene was a amazing man. REST IN PEACE PETEY! Why didnt we go see this AMAZING FILM TALK TO ME????

  • Back in the day we didn't have Internet, Cell phones that can do everything, etc, so I can see how local talent was under the radar by today's standard, but I remember Petey Greene as a younger, his show use to come on every Friday night and he sounded a lot like most of the Hustlers, pimps & thugs that populated my neighborhood growing up in D.C. (But with a little more common sense thrown in the mix), but don't feel bad Homie it was a lot of cats out there who's stories will never get told.

  • Amen.

  • damn bro U THE NEW PETEY GREENE

  • this video is real... and its no joke i happened to watch the movie late saturday night after the kimbo slice fight with my girl and it was coming on cinemax and i just happened to catch it and like spit says my mouth was open... i was like who is the cat and why is it i have never heard of this guy?...

  • Stick, make sure you check out the book it was based on ... cancer got him but he was real loved in DC.

  • It's true, I've never heard of him, and damn look at all the things he did! This man was a legend who never got any credit for it.

  • DAAAAAAAMN..........BRO i thought the same daamn thing when i watch the movie....how come i ain't never herd about this man...PETEY GREENE SHIIIIIIIIIT ....I CHECKED HIS WEB SITE AND ALL THAT .......ya'll need check him out .........STICK187 ...you the modern day PETEY GREENE

  • DAAAAAAAMN..........BRO

  • Thanks Stick!

    that was well said :)

  • Real spit. This right here is the definition of 100.

Good lookin...We need more like you.

    Uno.

  • amen! enlighten the world my man!

  • really was a good movie.

  • Also if you do a video search for "don't adjust the color" a new documentary that will be coming out soon. You will see a 2-3 second shot of a group of teens. I was one of them...just found that out tonite.

  • Brotha, I FEEL YOU! I didn't know who Petey was until my brother sent me the link to his Watermelon eating Video. It's disgusting that history classes don't teach blacks about this man. To Make Matters worse, I've searched all over the web, and you can't really find ANYTHING on him. I can't find audio clips of his Radio Broadcasts, I can't find Video footage of his Televised program.

  • I just watched "Talk To Me". It was awesome; Don Cheadle did an excellent job. There is a website about him.

  • Petey was all of it, but you also have to recognize that the piece was about Dewey Hughes, who gave Petey his shot. Dude opened up radio for black people in DC.

Real Talk-find out who Dewey Hughes is, he's alive right now. I love Petey, great man, but Dewey Hughes gave him his shot. Recognize!

    ...Ty Gray-EL

  • You got it man....you have the vision on what its all about.

  • i've heard about him a couple years ago about the watermelon which is on youtube. I'm going to have to watch that movie now.

  • Joekidd33 - 'Queer'

    eyemran

  • I totally agree with this... I saw that film about a month and a half ago... And I thought the exact same thing... "Why don't I know who this man is??" You're right... our good leaders are always taken away from us... We have to stand up and be those leaders for the next generation. Peace and love my brother.

  • dawg every time they close my account i find you. you are the man!

  • Good video 5 stars Brother!

  • Good movie dude. I recently saw it. There are many unspoken heroes. Keep living.

  • aaah thats my movie Yo! it inspires me everytime i watch it.

  • hell naw i aint never heard of him before until now this name is a first for me im going to google now

  • 5*s

  • I'll tell you why you've never heard of this man.

Mainstream media/television shows are too wrapped up in talking about celebrities, sugar-coated and generalized "news", and reality (which is SO not) television.

THEY think no one wants to see REAL people.

I'm sick of television, and actually, I'm boycotting Fox and its sponsors. If you want to do this, too, message me and I'll give you a list of their sponsors.

  • That's word right there! They distort 'history' in order to control us in the present and maintain control in the future. I agree - it's a primary role of media - reinforcing and reproducing cultural beliefs, so it makes perfect (non)sense.

    eyemran

  • I feel you, I only watch CNN, ESPN, Cartoon Network, and Soap Operas. You can't fuck up sports, cartoons, and 1 hour dramas and thank God for that.

    Viacom needs to go down!

  • let me give you some other black radio hall of famers - this is legacy:

Petey Greene, The Magnificent Montague, Louise "The Queen" Steinberg, Jack "The Rapper" Gibson, The MAdHatter, LEvi Booker, so many...

  • as a professional in black radio, I can tell you that Petey Greene is an icon in our history as black broadcasters.. so in that movie, you should know that Dewey Hughes is Cathy Hughes ex husband... that union with Petey and dewey was the origin of black radio corporation radio one... Petey Greene... what a hallowed name in black radio...

  • I had never heard of him. I just got done watching the trailer for Talk to Me. I am going to rent it soon.

  • Petey Greene Won two Emmy-Awards,hes a good actor, thanks for letting me know about him,i didn't know who he was either

  • Stick 187 - I'm not going to apologize for what I'm about to say and people can interpret it however they please. I LOVE YOU MAN! Man, at the rate you're going, they're gonna take YOU from us dawg! Fuck that! It ain't happening!

    eyemran

  • eyemran, why should you feel that you have to preface a positive thing like that? Especially, since stick is talkin about "keepin it real"....don't feel like you can't express yourself for fear of how some low-level person may interpret.

    peace and blessings and LOVE

  • Thank you so much and I agree! I try to live by and practice that exact principle but there's lots of homophobia on Youtube (especially in the African American community) - or just in the media in general, so I thought I could insulate myself from being interpreted as 'gay' by prefacing my comments as so. I'm secure being a 'heterosexual,' but I'm a staunch advocate for the GLBTQ community - cuz I think we need to start addressing this issue within the African American community.

  • When the movie first came out(talk to me)I had researched the guy. While I was researching him I found a clip on youtube of him talking about how to eat a Watermelon.

  • Also check out that Hustlin' Backwards vid.

  • You ain't the only one homie! I bought it for my homeboy's birthday the other day, but I've never seen it. He says he'll never let me use it, that I should buy another copy for myself. But I feel you homie! Real chop! Much love Stick! Keep talkin the real.
