i used to be scared of this when i was a kid. the scary looking face and the tempo of the drums and cymbols spooked the crap outta me. it seemed like it was mad at me and was chasing me
Depends on your lineage. Wan Chi Ming is definately not southern mantis. Personally I have seen all types of these dances and it seems to not be style specific.
@race2max unicorn dance is performed by southern mantis (hakka background) and by people from Tai Pang. Wan Chi Ming teaches hung gar, but he is from Tai pang.
That is a Southern Unicorn. It shares similar purposes to lion dancing. The dancing is indeed very different, and the instruments varie. I've seen troupes use drum, no drum, or small drum, but it all depends on where you studied, and what you were taught.
Their is an Northern Unicorn(2 horns), and Northern Lion as well.
Unicorns are commonly danced by Hakka people, and Chow Ga Tong Long practitioners.
Very cool. I love Chinese martial arts but don't know anything about these dances. What are they for, besides display and celebration, if anything? What's the difference between a unicorn dance and a lion dance? Are there others? Anything would be helpful. Thanks.

Also notice the smaller unicorn head and horn swerving movements. Very different play from the lion dance.
