Sufism is about trying to improve oneself by the company and teachings of a authentic living Master. Your master, if it is written for you to ever have one, will find you when you are ready, but a little searching might help too... My Master is morroccan, his name is Sidi Hamza Qâdiriy Butchichy, and he has a group of disciples in NY, but I don't know more about it since I live in Belgium.

They are repeating "Hayy" taken from "Al Hayy" which means "The Living". It is one of the 99 words of Allah.

When you recite it constantly like this, all troubles/worries/anxieties about life/depression.

All of it is removed and you feel like a baby at the end of the Dhikr (rememberance of Allah).

I agree that Sufism should very much stay as an intricate part of Islam. Therefore, I disagree with Universal Sufism, which says that you don't have to be Islamic to be a Sufi. Therefore, while I appreciate Universal Sufism, I am not its greatest fan, because Sufism without Islam is really just re-hashing Buddhism and Taoism.

Some claim that Sufism can exist on its own, but many Sufi's claim that with Islam Sufism will have no structure and form. Islam provides the 'framework' for the Sufism to sit on. But then again, it has to also be acknowledge that Sufi's tend to have a different hadith/Sunnah collection, and there are sectarian translations of the Quran - you can get a translation of the Quran with a Sufi 'leaning'.
