The comparisons are spot on. The difference between Chris Morris/Armando Iannucci fans and current affairs producers are that the fans get the joke. However, the producers are so thick they think their satirical output are genuine lessons on how to make the news.
Their thickness is so strong they believe every time audience figures go down the answer is to dumb it down further. News producers are a bunch of dumbing down f*$Knuts and a£$ecandles.
The computer graphics designers who did the ITN news reports were the same people who were hired by the The Day Today's producers. Who else do you think did them?
Holy shit...that bit where steve coogans picture gets turned into a stopwatch and then a running shoe..couldn't stop laughing...and the music playing with it lol
This comparison is a dated underestimation; the brand new extra shite ITV News latest theme music sounds identical to the Day Today. Someone tell me theyre having a laugh.
@ChristopherPooleUK Not really. The theme tune, maybe. But the unnecessary walking? Gone. The meaningless virtual floor graphs? Gone. The banter from the news channel? Gone. (Apart from And Finally... but that doesn't go to seriousness afterwards, does it?). Over the top titles - sadly remain. No titles in 2008 was probably a good idea. But anyway. It's definitely less tacky.
Sky News is as big a culprit as ITV, and most news channels, even the BBC, have become what Morris was satirising. I still love the opening crawls of On The Hour: "Man is 90% water, but On The Hour is100% NEWS." Brilliant.
I noticed the similarities before - it was when ITV news started doing the dramatic close-ups of the presenters faces. I was sure it was a behind-the-scenes bet at first, but they've been doing it for years now.
Have you notioced that on the ITV new, when they are standing up (why do they do that?) the man is much taller than the woman. They wouldn't do it if it was the other way around. Am I right or am I right?
No The Day Today = Newsnight with Jeremy Paxman! Look at the set, and Chris Morris' impersonation of him xD

I bet Chris Morris had thought of the "march-to-the-desk-after saying the headlines" bit...

Entertaining but The Day Today was a parody of programs like the the ITV news. Of course there will be similarities - that was the whole point.

Typical ITV; this just sums up their journalism and the company as a whole...utter shit

It's good, I like it, but a few of the comparisons are about Brass Eye rather than Day Today.
Good anyways!

Well put together. It exposes how the news is nothing but a show biz limited attention span show. No analysis and no context..

The Day Today (On The Hour) was ahead of it's time. This proves it.

@youngian67 I know, I did this in 2005 and yet they haven't learned. Today, the comparison grows stronger.

Just wondering though, where do we go from here?

I'm not the only one to think this either. The ITV News channel circa 2003 (Iraq War time) emulated the 'War' episode of The Day Today.

heheh this is great!!! Wish Chris would do more of this, bbc news is ripe for getting ripped to shreads again.

Just watch the "WAR!" episode of The Day Today. It basically IS what Fox News has become.
