haha i love the back and forth as to what CRD means, you guys are pretty much all right on the money, CRD stands for Common rail direct injection, this system is a diesel design, so you can be forgivin for calling it Common rail diesel, because really that is what it is.
Why it took this long for such a diesel engine to make its way under the hood of the Jeep Cherokee is beyond my comprehension. It should've been done years ago, when the first generations (1984) Jeep Cherokee was introduced.
@jeep4jeep Probably. I like SUVs for the utility and off-road capability. What I don't like is the fuel economy that one has to expect from them. Does that mean they should be banned from use? I don't think so. There will always be a need for such vehicles. I'd buy a Jeep Liberty, or even its predecessor, the Cherokee if it came with a diesel engine. I prefer either the 3.0 litre V6 CRD engine, or the 2.8 litre CRD engine. They both put out more than enough torque for the vehicle,
@jeep4jeep while also getting better fuel economy than the same vehicle with the gasoline engine. If the US Govt. wants we the people to buy a vehicle that gets better than 20mpgs, then they need to allow us to buy diesel. If it means lowering the cost per gallon of diesel, that'd be wonderful!
@jeep4jeep Car makers say that we're not interested in diesel? Bullshit! How the hell do they make such decision? Do they ask us drivers if we want diesel? If they did, I reckon some of us might say no way!, but alot of us would really want a diesel powered car, or a diesel powered truck or SUV. I know I would, particularly since this new diesel engine burns cleaner than they did 30-40 yrs ago. And while we're on the subject of burning diesel,
@jeep4jeep Car makers say that we, the American buyers aren't interested in diesel? That's so bullshit! Why don't the car makers listen to what we want instead of jumping to conclusions? I'd buy a Jeep CRD, whether it's a Grand Cherokee, or a Liberty if one were available.
is it good on gas? cause im considering of getting one its perfect for me the only thing holding me backbut is that i know its a diesel u never know plz respond some one

The Diesel Grand Cherokee and Cherokee was available most places except America

@jeep4jeep That's lame. Why was it not available here in North America?

@Seattlecarnut
From what I understand - car makers say that American buyers aren't interested in Diesels...
I've also noticed how even Jeep® with '07 Grand Cherokee - would play down the MPG figures too.
It's a real shame, because Diesels in Europe are not smokey filthy things, they're advanced & Clean burn.
Almost every car sold in Europe is available as a Diesel.
Back in 90's I had a peugeot 405 1.9D, fully loaded with people and luggage as well as 3 mountain bikes. Continually returned 49MPG

Common Rail Diesel.... C R D...
Its usual high pressure Piezo injectors that can be programmed and timed individually... makes them much cleaner to burn and more efficient...
no Mechanical fuel pump any more.... the injector does the pumping at almost 20,000 psi.
