@SpamAnn A new system? Perhaps a system that was discarded a long time ago instead~~ Ex. In terms of finances, the gold standard was the best.
I don't think in this day and age "equality" can be achieved. Not when so many ppl don't understand each other, the societies they live in, human nature, etc... They're pre-occupied with themselves or their groups or smthing (ex. feminism, maleism, etc) that they've lost the bigger picture.
I'm not arguing with you, sry if it seems so. Peace.
@damaged2 : Equality is a reality, the only problem is : we are not living it. Dont let your mind tell you that it is not possible. Be your own direction, your own master, and not what has been programmed into you. It is because of this system that there is so much misunderstanding and seperation, so much conflict and arguing. That is what you get with a system driven by profit, that uses people to make profit, and then creates abusers because of it. The fruits of the tree, are rotten.
I'm afraid not, Said! Unfortunately, most of the sane people think that you're an utter prat! Ask them who they'd prefer to meet: Edward Said or the man, who cleans out the public toilets in Aberdeen, and they'd go for Wee Jock "Poo-Pong" McPlop every time.
What is the date of this production? Why don't you people ever give a complete description of the videos that you post? Without such information, this video is completely devoid of historical context.
Was this made in 1999? 2003? 1992? 1984? When? No one knows unless you tell us!

"Decent and humane lives in the Middle East?!" Is this guy crazy? Over 5 million teenagers in Pakistan and Iran are drug addicts!!!!! FACT! Moreover, Muslim women undergo clitoridectomies, have acid thrown in their face for not walking on the correct side of a sidewalk in Iran! Shall I continue anyone? Do we see these kind of inhumanities in the West? NO!!! Despite, moreover, evidence to the contrary, 9/11 was not a Bush Administration conspiracy. The cause: evil Islam!! That is fact!
@mrpeach86 that is simply the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard in my entire life. how many drug addicts are there in the west? i bet its a comparable number. here's a question: where did that "fact" come from anyway? also, i think you should remember that there are cultural differences between every society. every one has their good and bad. there are plenty of inhumanities in the west. if you cant see them you must be utterly blind.
Brillant Mind, Inspiring Man, and all those who want a middle class society in the Middle East should read about him and process his breaxthroughs to live a richer life of peace and prosperity not random warfare and aggression
Since orientalism is key in creating such a discourse, it is important to keep referring to Foulcault.
On your last two points....what good is an appreciation of a culture that is not actually Arab? And while many of the works of art are beautiful, they are not representative. Do you know who Um Kalthoum is? Abdel Halim Hafez? Ibn Khaldun? Al-Ghazali? Do you know Yousseff Shaheen or Adel Emmam? Most Americans dont. How can you appreciate our culture if you are unaware of it?
1. He reduces his attack on scholars who have dedicated time, effort and reputations to study the ME. I believe he is unfair in his attack on Bernard Lewis. These people study the ME and Islam because they are curious and are not trying to deny the East representation.
2. Too reliant on Foucault
3. 'The Snake Charmer' is not necessarily a negative painting.
4. Ignores Western appreciation of Middle Eastern culture.
His attach on Bernard Lewis is based on his support of Israel colonization of Palestine and unpredent violation of Palestinian peoples' human rights. Do you think that Bernad's support of Israel's genocide of Palestinin people based on his 'curiosity'? if we percieve a scholar to be objective and neutral how can we call Lewis a scholar who supports such unprecedented genocide?
1.Bernard Lewis' work carries the tone of Western superiority that Said disucsses in the earlier works of Orientalism. While these studies are conducted as a result of curiousity, the mentality they are studied from gives cause for concern. Especially when their published works are arguments about a broad subject based on specific statistics.
2. His Foucault reliance is importance since Foucault devloped the impact of discourse.
Said does take into account possible stereotyping of European peoples, he calls this 'Occidentalism' and claims it is equally as dangerous. Please read his book before making hasty comments.
I must add that Said has pointed out some important distortions in the media. However, I do not agree with his personal polemics on so-called 'Orientalist' historians and religious scholars.
Said was an apologist for Islamic expansionism. His analysis is flawed and so simplistic. The introduction talks about 'We' (presumably meaning Westerners, which in turn presumably means white people) in the most simplistic terms. The irony of his stereotyping of white people of European descent whils accusing them of exactly the same thing against Muslims (make no mistake that is who we are supposed to sympathise with) is juvenile and insulting.
Said isn't an apologist for any Muslim or Arab political movement, he's saying that when pundits and the media looks at Muslims or Arabs, they conclude that militant actions are a product of some major difference in these people's psyche. That's like saying that China invaded Tibet (examples involving neither Muslim, nor Western "civilizations") because the Sino/Confuscian culture is one of agression and expansion, and thus every single Chinese man, woman and child yearn for conquest...
...When you say Islamic expansionism, do you mean military campaigns by theocratic Islamic states, or secular states with a muslim population, or Islamist militant groups, or secular militant groups that happen to be Muslims? And if any, what are the motives these culprits have...
Mostdimenstionless, and I say this with utmost due respect, you do not seem to have anything near appreciable understanding of Said's argument. I've never heard anyone say said simplifies issues. I've been to several of his lectures, and if anything, he is excruciatingly detailed. If you actually have read Said, then I urge you to re-read him, and with an open-mind and positive conscious.

Yeah, I'm sure if Said was a Muslim he'd have given Islamic media and politician's a hard time. I presume he just believed in picking the plank out of your own eye before picking the speck from your neighbour's....
very insightfull video! we need a new system in this world. Join the equality solution!

mrpeach86 - you are immensely ignorant..
There are many issues in the middle east, however there are MANY decent and humane ppl ther also.
"do we see these inhumanities in the west?"
No- we make sure the atrocities we commit are in OTHER countries:
-US backing the Israeli occupation of Palestine for 60yrs
-US training the Taliban to fight the Russians
-US donating $6bn to Al Qaeda from 1989-92
-US destabilising democracy in Iran in the 1950s in order to secure oil for the UK
